Lesson Topic - Conditionals – First Conditional Vs Second Conditional

- to teach a learner to talk about a possible condition and its probable result in the
Aims future by using the first conditional,
- to teach a learner to talk about un unreal/hypothetical situation and its probable
result by using the second conditional.
At the end of the lesson, a successful learner will be able to:
Objectives 1. differentiate between a possible situation (1st conditional) and an
imaginary situation (2nd conditional),
2. use the conditional sentences appropriately,
3. speak using the target vocabulary (Index 1).
Materials - PowerPoint Presentation, modified worksheets, writing implements
A learner may have difficulty grasping the difference between the first conditional
Anticipated and second conditional.
Problems - A learner might use “was” instead of “were” with singular pronouns and
“will” instead of “would”. (2nd conditional)
- A learner might use “will” after conjunctions “if, when, until …”. (1st
conditional)
- Explain the difference and give examples of both conditionals
Solutions - If you go to the beach, you will see the sea (1st conditional - fact)
- If I were you, I would travel the world! (2nd conditional - imaginary)
- Ask students to give their own examples to ensure they understood.
- Welcome the learner and break the ice by asking several questions: How
are you? How did you spent the weekend? What is the weather going to
Warm-up Stage be like? What was on TV yesterday? How do you keep up to date with the
(20 mins) news?, etc.
- Tell the learner that we are going to learn the conditionals.
- Grab a chair and face it towards a learner, sit down, act as though you have
something you want to share with him/her
- Say, ‘Sometimes I don’t want to be me!’ pause ‘Sometimes I want tobe an animal!’
- Ask the learner ‘What kind of animal do you think I would be?’
- Discuss for a while.
- Write on the board the following:
If I weren’t me, I would be a bird so I could fly.
- Tell the learner that this is an imaginary situation and is not real making it a second
conditional.
- Pre-teach the words from the materials by giving an English explanation (Index 1).
- Avoid using Czech equivalents!
Study Stage - Before explaining the second conditional, revise the first one!
(30 mins) - For the first conditional, open the presentation!
- Go through the first two slides and brush up on the first conditional and its typical
mistakes!
- For the second conditional, refer back to the sentence written before, say it out loud,
If I weren’t me, I would be a bird so I could fly.
- Ask the learner: Is this a fact? Is it scientific? Is it probable? Can it happen? No, it
can’t happen, so it is hypothetical or imaginary.
- Subsequently, open the presentation and instruct the learner on how to form and use the
second conditional!
- Point out that we use “were” instead of “was” for the verb “to be” for all persons!
Activity No. 1 (Discover the Grammar)
- Call on the learner to scan through the passage!
- Afterwards, ask the learner to do the first two exercises by underlining the three
if-clauses that have simple past tense verbs and the three if-clauses that have
simple present tense verbs.
- Check the exercise with the learner!
- Ask the learner to do the exercise No. 3 and then check it!
Activity No. 2 (the First Conditional)
- Ask the learner to do the exercise No. 4. His/her task is to circle the first
conditional sentences from the list of items from a gardening pamphlet “Five
Sage Suggestions for Gardeners!”
- When the learner has done this exercise, check it with him/her.
Practice Stage Activity No. 3 (Discussion)
- Call upon the learner in order to go through the questions in the exercise 5.
(30 mins)
- Subsequently, tell him/her you are going to ask him/her these questions and
his/her task is to answer them using the first conditional.
Activity No. 4 (Identifying the Second Conditional “Moving Away for a New Job”)
- Ask the learner to circle the conditional sentences that are unreal to happen!
- Check it with him/her!
Activity No. 5 (Discussion)
- Call upon the learner in order to go through the questions in the exercise 7.
- Subsequently, tell him/her you are going to ask him/her these questions and
his/her task is to answer them using the second conditional.

- Set the homework!

Final Stage - Tell the learner to do the exercise 8 and write three first conditionals sentences
(10 mins) and three second conditional sentences!
- Evaluate learner's involvement 😊
- Arrange another lesson!
