Should some aspects of fraternities and sororities be banned?

The national organization of college fraternities and sororities should take a deeper look

into the activities that the groups participate in, and the abuse of drug usage. The hazing rate

has increased tremendously, and the death of baleful drinking. The national organization of

college fraternities and sororities should make sure that the pledges main focus for joining

the fraternity/ sorority is to become a better citizen and a better person. The big focus, not to

wear the letters and party every night. Should there be a harder penalty for students involved

in hazing activities? How do you deal with those students? It's a tradition and it's been passed

along, which happened to them, so how can you change it? What can the college and

universities do to reduce the deaths and incidents from continuing to happen? Not everything

about fraternities and sororities is negative. They are also humans. Are great students and

local leaders. Did you know that members in a fraternity or sorority are 20% more likely to

graduate the institution? What are some positive aspects of joining a fraternity or sorority?

Did you know fraternities and sororities donate over 5.5 million dollars a year to

philanthropies?

Bronson 2
Joining a fraternity or sorority isn't just a regular group, you gain a support

system that will be there for you eternally! 85% of the world's leaders are apart of a fraternity

or sorority, so if you take that away look at it as your losing leaders in future generations.

People have a negative look at fraternities and sororities, but don't know the good aspects

that they actually provide the community also the members of the groups.

Should there be harsher penalties for students involved in hazing

activities? How do you deal with those students? Research states “those students should be

prosecuted at the fullest.” One, that's someone's son/daughter, lover,

grandson/granddaughter, niece/nephew. I'm sure their family care about them and would

want some actions to take place. Many college students die every year. One article says

“nineteen-year-old Timothy Piazza decided to pledge to the Beta Theta Pi fraternity.

However, on the night of February 2, 2017, Piazza was not aware that this night of pledging

would be his last on earth. The hazing activities revolved around the forced consumption of

large amounts of alcohol. As a result, Piazza became very intoxicated, which led to his

falling down a staircase where he suffered a traumatic and ultimately fatal brain injury. The

hazing began with all the pledges collectively finishing a handle of vodka. Next, the pledges

entered the fraternity house, took a shot of vodka, and ran down the hallway to drink a beer.

After drinking the beer, the underage pledges were forced to drink wine from a bag as the

brothers poured beer all over them.

Bronson 3
In order to complete another activity. The students directed the pledges to “make a shot in

beer pong” and if they missed the cup, “they had to drink a beer”. The other pledges weren't

prosecuted and didn't get in any trouble for the incident.” I think someone should speak out

about it can help the families that go through the tragedies. These are innocent people who

were just trying to join a group. They don't deserve the harsh activities and things they're

forced to do. Put a stop to hazing!

What can the college and universities do to reduce the deaths and incidents from

continuing to happen? Every member has the opportunity to create an atmosphere that

eliminates hazing. You can reduce the Power differential between members and initiates.

Members of fraternities and sororities do not have an innate desire to haze, but they are often

in situations where they can abuse power over new members. By creating an atmosphere

where new members can discuss their feelings and emotions with existing members without

punishment, members will find less opportunities to haze. Give members time to think on

their actions. Members in a high-pressure hazing situation are more likely to think

irrationally and act in demeaning ways. Planning pledging activities in advance and allowing

members to understand and discuss their role in the proceedings reduces the possibility of

making poor, horrible decisions. Encourage Members to state there Concern With the New

Member Education Program.

Bronson 4

Those who oppose hazing are less likely to speak out if they feel they are alone in their

opinion. For many students, leaving home to go away to college can be difficult because
you're separated from your family and close friends for the first time. To combat this, experts

suggest socializing as a means to avoid depression."students that entered the Greek system

had larger support systems and more friends than students that chose not to. This can impact

a student by preventing feelings of loneliness." Every single member who speaks out against

hazing can encourage others to do the same. Be willing to amend traditions, The same

education methods may not work for every new member class. Organizations should

consider multiple solutions to solving problems and use campus and organizational resources

to increase their creativity. Consider the activities you create as part of a new tradition for

future pledges. Develop a Chapter Anti-Hazing Policy, In additional to college/Universities

and your national organizational regulations, create and distribute an anti-hazing policy for

your chapter. Other researchers say that you should “Provide an outline of non-acceptable

activities and behaviors, and create internal sanctions for members who violate the policy.

Share Ideas With Other Organizations, Talk with members of other organizations to discuss

hazing-related incidents and strategies to reduce hazing. Connect with other chapters of your

organization to see how they educate new members in accordance with national policy.”

Take Advantage of Campus Resources, The college/Universities provides resources to help

with leadership development on campus. The student leadership workshops that can be

incorporated into the new member education program. In addition, Fraternity and Sorority

Bronson 5

Affairs is available to discuss strategies for change and ways to improve the new member

program.
Not every aspect of a fraternity or sorority is bad! They are pretty good and helpful in the

environment. A benefit of fraternities and sororities that contradicts common public

perception is academic support and improved performance. While media often portrays the

party atmosphere of frats and sororities, many hold group study sessions and provide internal

tutoring for members. The UMKC website indicates that “50 percent of fraternity and

sorority members graduate, compared to just half of the non-Greek members. The blend of

social belonging and academic support systems undoubtedly contribute to this success.

research has shown that members of Greek organizations maintain higher grade point

averages than those not affiliated with a fraternity or sorority. Joining a fraternity or sorority

also provides advantages for finding a career after school. Long-running fraternities and

sororities usually have a strong connection to their alumni. In fact, many alumni serve as

advisers to houses. Alumni are great networking resources if you find one in your field or a

company you have an interest in working for. Fraternities and sororities often have

community pages on social networking sites, which provide access to thousands of

professional alumni. Geographically-located networking events are held by some houses for

members and alumni. Fraternity and sorority members also engage in community service and

other on-campus activities, which looks good on a resume. you also have the opportunity to

Bronson 6

run for an officer position, such as the president. It's been 18 u.s Presidents that been apart of

fraternities. This offers a great leadership development opportunity. Fraternity and sorority

members also commonly become more active school leaders and involved citizens in the

community. Fraternities and sororities form the largest network volunteers in the United
States, and members volunteer approximately 10 million hours of community service each

year.You won't just be encouraged to help other people if you get involved with Greek life;

one of the benefits of joining a fraternity or sorority is that you'll be required to participate in

events and fundraisers that will help your community and the world at large. This volunteer

work provides invaluable experience outside of the traditional classroom setting.

Fraternities offer opportunities for personal growth and maturity outside of the traditional

classroom setting as well. Students who join these organizations not only end up building

networks that can help them get jobs after graduation, but also develop leadership and social

skills that allow them to maintain interpersonal relationships long after they leave school.

Fraternities provide opportunities for members to hone skills such as time management,

which can prove invaluable in a professional career after college. The effects of Greek life

can be felt long after a fraternity brother or sorority sister graduates from college. Research

states that “Statistics show that 85% of Supreme Court justices since 1910 have been

members of Greek organizations at their respective schools. Since 1825, every president

except for two has donned a fraternity letter, and since 1900, 70% of the presidential cabinet

Bronson 7

has donned fraternity or sorority letters. Further, 85% of Fortune 500 lead executives were

members of the Greek system, and 43 of the 50 largest corporations are headed by the former

fraternity or sorority members.” Many of these leaders are role models and are in fraternities

and sororities, such as Such as Michael Jordan, is a member of Omega Psi Phi, Civil rights

leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha, Comedian and actor

Cedric “The Entertainer” is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi, Singer Alicia Keys became an
honorary member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, TV host and comedian Steve Harvey is a member

of Omega Psi Phi, Actor Omari Hardwick is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha. Marvin Sapp is a

member of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity. The Rev. Jesse Jackson is a member of Omega Psi

Phi fraternity. George W. Bush Delta Kappa Epsilon at Yale University, Bill Clinton Phi

Beta Sigma, George H.W. Bush Delta Kappa Epsilon at Yale University, John F. Kennedy

Phi Kappa Theta at Harvard University, Dwight D. Eisenhower: Tau Epsilon Phi

Did you know fraternities and sororities donate over 5.5 million dollars a year to

philanthropies? With such a large number of members in the Greek community, they are able

to make a huge impact on their communities and the world with the philanthropies that they

support. the men of Sigma Chi raise money and awareness for HCI. Sigma Chi International

Fraternity has pledged to donate 11 million dollars to HCI for cancer research over the next 7

years. Sigma Chi, the top-ranked U.S. college fraternity for 2012, had donated a total of

1,436,883 dollars to charity. Alpha Chi Omega, or “Alpha Chi,” focus their philanthropic

efforts on combating domestic violence and teaching prevention on these topics. The sorority

Bronson 8

routinely donates to Harmony House, a local shelter that provides advocacy and education

for survivors and families escaping domestic violence. Vice President of Philanthropy

Mackenzie Spaulding, believes part of joining a social the sorority is giving back to the

community. Greek organizations are not all about partying and having fun. It's about

becoming a better person and helping the community. You have help from everyone, you

will

be feeling lonely or unsupportive. Everyone is positive and have goals they want to achieve.

Fraternities and sororities will help you get to that point and become successful.
Fraternities and sororities play a big role in the future, because younger kids and teens,

look up to people and is inspired to be like that older person when they grow up. So if we

ban fraternities and sororities a lot of things will change. It will be a drop of

brotherhood/sisterhood. Less African American leaders and politicians. There will be a drop

in the black community. And the future wouldn’t have any role models to look up to. Lots of

role models are in fraternities and sororities. Fraternities mean a lot when you can see it

anytime you want. Fraternities is a great. Fraternities and sororities gives you every aspect to

be successful. You just have to want it. They can do all the work for you but is you going to

learn from that. peaceful and will to help you through everything to get support. There very

have high self-esteem and is very confident in themselves. My survey is about fraternities

and sororities. Most people who answered was between 18-30, and was not in a fraternity or

sorority, but they answered that they would join and will be involved in becoming not only a

Bronson 9

pledge but a better citizen and a better person overall. On my survey students answered

questions on how they would join a fraternity or sorority. Surveyors state “it would be a great

experience.” “it will help become a better citizen.” and many more positive answers. I think

that fraternities and sororities have a positive impact on the community and they help out an

large amount.

I really hope that I inspired you to lean on joining a fraternity or sorority. I hope that you

received great information that will stay with you for a lifetime. All of this information
just talk and is really true and can really help your future. Fraternities and sororities play a

big role in the black community as the brothers and sisters of fraternities/sororities and the

community become stronger and help make a difference. Be role model to the you

generation. Make this better, stop settling for less. Another academic advantage for Greeks is

a higher retention rate students are more likely to stay enrolled at their college. Professors

found that joining a Greek organization "had a dramatically positive effect on persistence to

graduation." Go get what’s yours and work for it. Never let anyone tell you that you can't or

you not good enough. Defeat the odds, come out on top and show all the doubters that you

really have potential to be great.

Bronson 10

I prefer everyone goes to college after high school and attend college. Join a fraternity and

sorority would be a great life long experience that will never end. "Greeks were more likely

to have High than Low gpa's and Independents were more likely to have Low than High

GPA's."It will certainly prepare you for the real world and set you up to be successful. I will

be joining a fraternity in upcoming years because i feel as if it's a great experience and is a

big part of your future. Its apart of my family tradition for me to uphold. I would join a black

fraternity which practice good leadership roles, not only around school but internationally. A

common argument against Greek life one that appeared is that fraternities and sororities are

homogeneous, a claim that may have been true in the past but is actively changing now.
