4. PERSONNET
Experience personnel shall perform the testing outlined in this procedure
a 5. EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS :
a. Leak Detector Solution
. Use a commercial solution such as Scan test concentrate, Seam test Concentrate-
low TemPerature, SnooP, or equal.
OR
o prepare a solution of liquid detergent or liquid soap with water in the proportion of
one (L) pint (0.5 liters) of detergent or soap, and four (4) quarts (3.8 liters) of
water. prepare the solution in advance to allow the bubbles and foam to disperse
before using. To prevent the solution from icing in the container, if the ambient
temperature is below freezing, add ethylene glycol (antifreeze) to the solution in a
proportion of one part antifreeze to ten parts of the solution. Approximately 750
mm (30") of the seam under test is brush with a soap solution'

c. Vacuum Box: The box shall be constructed to produce and hold a pressure differential
least 18.3 inches Hg (8psi) (55 kpa gauge). A gauge shall be placed in the system to verify
the required pressure differential. Keep the transparent window on vacuum box clean to
ensure good visibility while performing the test'
d. Dimension of Vacuum Box to be used shall be of convenient size [e.g. 5 in (152 mm) wide
by 30 in (762 mm) long) with a clear window in the top'
e. Flashlight or brighter light source.
f. Clean dry rags or towels.

5. APPLICATION
debris
a. Remove from areas to be leak tested standing water, weld slag, mud, dirt, and other
which may prevent bubble formation'
b. performing a visual examination of the bottom and welds prior to performing the vacuum
box test
c. verifying the condition of the vacuum box and its gasket seals.
d. provide adequate lightlng for this examination. For example, daylight or illumination from a
(100
standard 3 volt (2 D Cells) flashlight is sufficient. A minimum liSht intensity of 1000 lux
FC) at the Point examination.
e. lf freezing weather conditions exist at the time of a test, heat the weld joints to be vacuum
tested until the metal is slightly warm to the touch in order to thaw any ice that could

possibly be plugging existing leaks. Limit the areas heated to that which can be tested
before the metal cools to f reezing temperatures.
f. Apply the leak detector solution to the welds to be tested in a continuous film relatively
f ree or bubbles.
Seat the vacuum box. The vacuum box must reach a minimum gauge pressure reading of
8.L inches Hg (3 psi) (21 kpa gauge) or larger.
h. Observe the detector solution as the box is evacuated to prevent overlooking indications of
leakage that tend to blow through the solution f ilm instead of forming visible bubbles.
t. Observe the detector solution for leakage for at least five (5) seconds.
t. Vacuum Box Overlap {an Overlap of 2 (two) inch Minimum for adjacent of the vacuum box
shall be used for each subsequent examination)
k. The metalsurface temperature limits shall be between 4"C (40 'F) and 52'C (125"F), unless
the film solution is proven work at temperatures outside this
o l. A record or report of the test including a statement addressing temperature and light
intensity shall be complete

7, ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA
All leaks located by vacuum box testing are unacceptable

8. REPAIRS
a. After repairs have been made, the repaired area shall be retested bythe applicable steps in
6.0.
b. ln addition, the repaired area shall be re-examined by all other methods originally required
for the affected a rea .
