Anchor Standard #8: Perform a varied repertoire of music by playing instruments. Beginning
P.8.B.1: Play and become aware of correct posture, characteristic tone quality, correct tuning,
and intonation, good breath support, and proper hand position.
Objectives:
Students will be able to:
Correctly and musically perform this arrangement of Ode to Joy with proper technique,
pitch accuracy, while following the written dynamics.
Materials:
Instruments
Piano (to assist in establishing tonal center; for beginning players)
Score for Ode to Joy (copies provided by Instructor)
Procedure:
Establish proper playing posture for each instrumentalist
Begin breathing exercises to help further the control of breathing for each player
Using the monitor to help control the flow of the breath, ask the students to inhale for
four counts, and exhale for four
Repeat this process several times before changing the ratio to 4:8, 2:8, 2:16, and 1:16
respectively
Buzz on the mouthpiece to warm up the lips so that the students are not playing the
instrument with cold muscles
Work to slur between each of these pitches to help gain control of the muscles that are
used for each note
Have the students look over their part within the song before reading through it as a
group
Once they are comfortable with the notes, have them finger through the song as a group
while singing the pitches using solfege
Ask the students to look through the piece one more time on their own
Once secure in their part, play through it slowly as a group
Once finished, I will take time to address small errors that I noticed throughout the
performance
Play through the piece again after fixing any previous problems
Continue to address any needed sections, perhaps playing through any parts with the
students as needed
Play through the piece one final time, paying closer attention to dynamics and phrasing as
an ensemble
Closure/Assessment:
On the final performance, I will be listening to assess the performance of each individual
player
I will do so by listening to balance, correct pitch accuracy, proper dynamics, and the
overall general effect that they are able to create as an ensemble
