Executive Summary

This report is written to provide useful insights on the current status of the dam
construction project. Different inputs are being used from the records as reference and
guidance in making important decisions to ensure smooth progress of the project and
as a vital performance indicator in this report. Based on the current progress of the
dam construction at halfway mark of the project (50%) is reported to be in a good state.
The amount of time taken to complete half of the height of the dam takes
approximately… weeks. At this current stage, the cost per meter of the dam
construction is about $... Weather condition which has direct effect on the progress of
the project is monitored through rainfall intensity. It is observed that rainfall… and will
influence time and cost required to complete the remaining of the project. Data
analysis is performed through calculations using the earn value method have found
that the CV value at $... CV value is recorded at $... The CPI value stands at… while
SPI value is… Future predictions of the project progress is indicated through the
forecasted value of EAC obtained at a cost of $... while the forecasted EAC for time
is. Therefore, it can be mentioned that the project will be finished successfully…
Project Background

Overview
This project involves the construction of a 30m earth dam across the bed of a valley,
with the top part of the dam being utilized as a path for motorway. The orientation of
the dam is to be constructed on an east-west line since the valley runs in a north-south
direction. The dam build is consisted of rock, with a central clay core. The rock fill is
obtained from the excavation for the motorway cutting on the west side of the valley.
The clay fill is to be obtained from a borrow pit in the bottom of the valley, about 1km,
away in a southerly direction. The cross-section of both the valley and the dam are
trapezoidal in shape. Therefore, the main scope of the project focuses on the filling of
rock and clay obtained within the site.

Summary
The table below shows the important details of the project:
Project Title
Project Duration
Date of Start
Date of Completion
Reporting Date

According to the contract, the project is to be finished within 40 weeks from the
starting date of 1st Sept 2014. In terms of revenue, a sum of $ is expected to be
obtained whereby payment is made after completion of per meter height of the fill. An
initial payment of $40,000 as well as early bonus of completion amounting to $10,000
per week are also included in the payment scheme. Meanwhile, the planned amount
of budget to complete the project is $... As of week…, the progress of the project is at
50% whereby the total height of the dam reaches halfway at 15m.

Rainfall Data

Figure 2: Forecast/Average Rainfall Records

Figure 3: Graph of Rainfall vs Time

Based on the graph, the forecasted rainfall matches closely with the actual
rainfall data obtained from the site up until this point of construction works in progress.
Because of that, it is a viable source to predict rainfall distribution for the remaining
half of the project. It is predicted that the average rainfall for the following weeks until
completion would be around …mm per day. As a consequence, the rate of productivity
will … and progress of works are expected to be largely unaffected by rainfall.
Resources

The resources are mainly consisted of machineries, supervision and training.

By referring to the resource chart, it can be seen that generally the resource
distribution at the start of the project is low. It steadily increases over the time and
remains constant throughout the remaining period until the halfway mark of the
project is reached. This in return ensures efficiency of construction and reduction in
overall cost and. Thus, it signifies the importance of having balance in resources.

Maintaining a steady use of resources over a period of time ensures the

workers being familiarized with the job scopes which prevents a delay in time in
learning if new workers were to be hired. It is also a good practice in keeping the
same workers consistently as they ought to work for a longer period of time rather
than short and uncertain contract period. Furthermore, it is also difficult to hire
certain resources for just a short time period effecting cost and efficiency of the
project.

Schedule (Progress to week)

The graphs shown above indicates slower progress of the project as

compared to the initial planning. To keep the current progress from delaying any
further, a revised plan has been implemented on … The updated plan estimates that
the dam construction will complete by week …

Cost

The graph indicates the current cost project as compared to the initial cost
planning. At the current stage, the CV value is at $..., which translate to the project
being …-budget. With that said, the expenditure on this project is still under control.
For the SV value, it stands at …, which shows that the project is behind time to a
certain extent. In the future, more machineries will be hired in order to overcome this
issue depending on the planned output.
The graph above shows actual vs. planned curve of expenditure and revenue.
Note that the yellow line indicates where the planned and actual values are break
even. Current progress shows that the planned income is at $... while the actual
stands at $..., with a difference of about $...

Forecast

With the data collected in hand, further estimation can be made on the
expected time and cost of the project. The revised plan introduced to address the
delay in current project progress estimates that the project will be completed in
another … weeks, taking a total of … weeks overall to finish. It is important to
highlight that progress towards the end is expected to be much faster, with lesser
volume of clay and rock to fill due to the profile of the dam being narrower at the top
and lesser amount of rainfall that can potentially hinders the project progress.

Cost-wise, the current cost required to construct per meter of the dam is $... It
is expected that the cost will decrease over time. The revenue is expected to be
increasing towards the end of the project. This is due to the nature of the payment in
the contract which is given on completion of per meter height basis. Therefore, profit
can be made by gaining more money at the end stage of the project. Upon
completion, the total cost of construction is estimated to be at a maximum of $... By
using the earn value method, the EAC is forecasted to be at $... and the EACtime is
… weeks. CPI and SPI values stands at … and … consecutively.

Problem faced, extra cost

Environment

Some of the problems faced regarding the environmental issue include

damaging the HSSI which leads to payment of fines of $... There is also complaints
from the local farmers about dust blowing to their compounds causing air pollution.
To avoid potential problems in the future, the cost of training and supervision has
been increased.

Safety

In terms of safety issues, some problems that appeared during construction

are the intrusion of clay plant into the access road and untested plant drivers. This
caused a total of $... fine imposed. The cost for safety supervision has also been
slightly increased.

Quality

Quality issue faced include poor quality of clay compaction which could affect
the structural rigidity of the dam. The cost for training is increased to avoid this
problem from happening in the future.
