IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR VENDORS
Blood & Hair Sampling: Please be aware that random & prize winners may be
blood sampled for the presence of illegal growth promoters; hair samples will
also to be taken to be analysed for artificial colorants. N.B. it is most likely that
these samples will be taken after the show, from approximately 3.45 p.m.
onwards – vendors must be present in their pens until the appointed Veterinary
Surgeon has completed collecting these samples.
Export Status: All males entered for this Sale/Show have to be tested for
export. You are reminded to bring with you to the sale the original report from
the brucellosis laboratory in Cork with the result of the Brucella Ovis test. You
will also need to have your original Scrapie Monitired Certificate for all rams
sold for export. All rams must fulfil a 60-day residency on the holding of origin
before export.
Ram Proformas: Should be available on the day of sale, completed and given
to the purchaser along with the Scrapie Genotype Cert.
Straw: Under no circumstance are vendors allowed to bring straw into the
Mart premises in 2008. Straw will be provided by the Mart.
All rules pertaining to sales are subject to change at the discretion of the
Department of Agriculture & Food.

THE LEAN MEAT INDEX (LMI)
Commercial sheep producers want lambs that grow quickly, are well muscled and carry the minimum
level of fat. The Lean Meat Index helps producers to achieve just that. The Lean Meat Index is a
measure which combines growth rate, muscle depth and fat depth for each ram lamb. The Average ram
in flock has an index of 100. Superior rams are those with an index above 100. Pedigree breeders,
participating in the Flock Improvement Programme can now provide commercial producers with a Lean
Meat Index for each of their rams. All sheep producers should look for this information when selecting
a ram. The Lean Meat Index is the best criterion to use when selecting a stock ram to produce quality
lean carcasses for today’s competitive markets.
Overseas buyers and their agents are strongly advised to contact the relevant Ministry/Department of
Agriculture before making a bid for sheep offered at this sale and so make sure the vendor is prepared
to sell his sheep subject to veterinary test required for the export. Sheep for export must come from
Fully Scrapie Monitored flocks (i.e. at least three years). Owners must remain in charge of their
respective lots and assist in marketing and delivery of such stock.
Some lots have had a Brucella Ovis test carried out prior to sale and comply with the current rules for
export – “Sheep coming from a Scrapie Monitored flock of three years duration, accompanied by a
certificate from their local District veterinary Office verifying this status. Sheep accompanied by an
Owner Declaration relating to the residency and disease status of the animals. Rams having a Brucella
Ovis negative test within 30 days of export, accompanied by a copy of the blood report and it must be
endorsed by the Veterinary surgeon who sampled the sheep. In the case of sheep adhering to the export
requirements and having the relevant export documentation carried out on the day of sale by the
Department Veterinary representative – they will be free to travel immediately from the sales yard.
Probationary Scrapie Monitored sheep are from flocks which have been participating in the
Department of Agriculture Scrapie Monitored Scheme for less than three years and therefore
cannot at this time sell for export. The progeny of flocks in either category may be considered
safe and free of the disease "Scrapie".
SCRAPIE GENOTYPING
The Suffolk is the only breed to provide significant Scrapie resistance within the national flock. Already
a massive 92% of Suffolks have totally or predominantly resistant genotypes. The Suffolk is in a
stronger position than many breeds because its genetic resistance to Scrapie is relatively simple to
improve through breeding. Many individual members have invested heavily in ensuring their flocks are
100% Scrapie resistant. Susceptibility can be determined, by using a simple blood test that reveals the
sheep’s genotypes. Research shows there are three places in the genotype where variations occur,
known as codons. Codon 136, 154 and 171. The Suffolk breed only vary on codon 171. Therefore they
are either Scrapie resistant “RR”; have some resistance “RQ” or are susceptible ”QQ”. In contrast many
other breeds have variations on all three codons.
All sheep at this sale have been Scrapie Genotyped - only those testing "RR" or "RQ" will be eligible
for sale. Most sheep have their test results printed in the catalogue - those still awaiting results at the
time of print will have them on the day of sale - all prospective purchasers are strongly advised to check
the Genotype of any sheep before making a bid in order to avoid disappointment.
