Band 8 Sample:

The given bar charts indicate the amount of money that people in 3 countries in Europe, namely
France, Germany and England, spent on food and other products in 1998 and 2008.

It can be seen that those three countries saw significant increases in national purchasing power
for both nourishment and other types of goods.

In 1998, French citizens allocated 15% and only around 10% of their income to buying foodstuffs
and other goods, respectively. After 10 years, those figures dramatically climbed to a similar
number of 40%. In Germany, there was a mild difference of 5% between the percentages of
income allotted to food commodities in 1998, with 25%, and 2008, with 30%. The numbers for
the other category were approximately 5% lower during the same years.

Regarding England, buyers spent only 10% on food in 1998 and 15% in 2008. Meanwhile, the
figure for other goods experienced a surge from about 8% in the year 1998 and 35% in 2008.

It is better for college students to live far away from home than live at home with
their parents. Do you agree or disagree?

Band 8.5 Sample Essay 1

Many students are faced with the dilemma of whether to live in a university dormitory or at
home with parents. From my perspective, a dormitory is evidently the better option for most
students.

On the one hand, there is a common belief that living with parents is better for students’
personal development. People may argue that students living at home may fully
concentrate on their academic study because their parents would normally support them in
other activities, such as doing household tasks. However, it is irrefutable that in this way, some
students may become over-reliant on their parents in most of their daily activities, and thus
lose the ability of living independently in the future. By contrast, students who live in dormitories
have to take care of themselves in all aspects of life. Therefore, they may acquire the vital skills
of a self-reliant person, ranging from financial management and problem solving to
meal planning and home management, all of which are essential to foster the all-round
personal development of this group of students.

On the other hand, there are several distinct advantages of choosing on-campus
residences. The most evident advantage is that students who choose this type of accommodation
would have extremely easy access to libraries and various learning sources that are readily
available at school. Another obvious benefit is that those living in a students’ residence are
exposed to a diverse environment with people from various social and cultural
backgrounds. From this, students are better prepared to live in this multi-cultural world.

From the issues outlined above, one can conclude that living inside the school campus is
apparently a better choice than living at home with parents.

Band 8.0 Sample 2:

It is a highly debatable issue whether it is more advisable if university and college students to live
far away from home than to live at home with their mother and father.

There are definite beneficial aspects of staying at home during university, one of which is the
cost-effectiveness and time-efficiency. Either staying at the university dormitory or renting
an apartment is quite expensive, and students are supposed to do their cooking, wash their
laundry and mop the floor. By contrast, at home there are hi-tech appliances like vacuum
cleaners, washing machines and students can rely on their parents’ assistance with all the
chores. In addition, under the protection and guidance of parents, youths often receive
moral lessons, shielded from the deleterious influences from their peers. No one

Students can also reap many benefits if choosing to stay near the university. Firstly,
geographical proximity means that students are given hundreds of opportunities to blend in
with people from different backgrounds and cultures. They can join in many extracurricular
activities with their friends and enhance numerous soft skills, or build up harmonious
relations with their landlord and learn to solve many real-life problems. Secondly, easier
access to study facilities such as libraries, computer labs is only available if students stay-near the
campus. This is conducive to their study progress as well as increase students’ freedom and
independence in learning.

In conclusion, I pen down saying that there are benefits and drawbacks of both approaches and
the decision is purely subjective, so I disagree that one is better than the other.

Band 8.5 Sample Essay 3:

As young adults enter college, they are presented with the choice of boarding at school or
living with their parents. This essay is going to argue that student accommodation is the optimal
choice for undergraduates. This point will be illustrated by looking at how living at home is simply
unfeasible for most students, and the benefits accruing from staying in a dormitory.

Today, very few students attend a local college or university, thus the idea of them staying at home
during school term is implausible. This is particularly valid in developing nations, where
most colleges are concentrated in urban centers. Daily commute would be difficult for those
who live in rural areas or even suburban residents. To these students, on- campus housing
is obviously the more sensible option. For example, in [country], rural citizens tend to move to the
city for college and share a dorm room instead of commuting from their residences.

The choice of living at school is reinforced by the fact that it fosters personal growth in ways
not otherwise possible with living at home. For instance, when boarding at a dormitory, students
with discrepant preferences would learn to make compromises. This is not necessary if
they live with their parents who are generally more accommodating. In addition, living away from
home also teaches students to be more independent, because they must manage their personal
finance as well as taking care of their own nutritional needs. In fact, Americans who lived in
fraternity houses during college have reported that they became more self-reliant as a result of
having to budget and cook for themselves.

In conclusion, I strongly believe that it makes more sense for college students to live on
campus, for the reasons provided above.
