Course Name: Industrial Laws 3 1 0 4

Course Objectives:

To make students aware of the safeguard available to workers against exploitation and to ensure
maintenance of good relationship between employees and employers in the society. The subject also aims
to make students aware of the provisions towards welfare and amenities of workers and how industrial
disputes can be amicably settled.

Learning Outcome

 Safeguard workers against exploitation.


 Practice provisions towards safety, welfare and amenities of workers.
 Build good relationship between employees and employers in the Industrial Establishment.
 Analyse and endeavour to amicably settle industrial disputes and its implication.

UNIT I 10 Hours

The Workmen’s Compensation Act, 1923 Provisions – Introduction, doctrine of assumed risk,
common employment, contributory negligence; Definitions, rules as to compensation.

UNIT II 8 Hours
Laws Related To Compensation Management: General Provisions of : The payment of Wages Act
1948, Payment of Bonus Act 1965, The Payment Of Gratuity Act 1972.

UNIT III 15 Hours


Laws related to Industrial Relations and Industrial Disputes: Industrial Disputes Act, 1947;
Definition, Authorities, Awards, Settlements, Strikes Lockouts, Lay Offs, retrenchment and Closure,
Important Provisions of The Trade Union Act, 1926

UNIT IV 10 Hours
Laws related to Health, Safety and Welfare: The Factory Act 1948: (Important provisions related to
Health, Safety and Welfare)

UNIT V 8 Hours
Social Legislation: Important provisions of Employee State Insurance Act 1948 and Employees
Provident Fund & Miscellaneous Provision Act 1948
