Lesson Plan in Mathematics II

(Explicit Teaching)

I. Objectives :

 Identify the unit of mass (in gram or kilogram and

their abbreviations g or kg) in measuring a
particular object.

II. Subject Matter:

“ Measuring Mass Using G and Kg”

Reference :
K- 12 Teaching Guide in Mathematics II pp. 409- 412

Materials :
1. Weighing scale
2. illusrations
3. Activity sheets
4. real objects

Integration :
Art, ICT, ArPan, MTB, Music

Value : Honesty

III. Instructional Procedure:

A. Preparatory Activities

1. Song

2. Motivation
 Who among you went to the wet market
already?
How about in the grocery?
What did you buy there?

 Today, I will be a vendor in the wet market.

 Is it important to have a market in the community?
Why?
B. Modelling

1. Show to the class a real weighing scale.

Say: Class, this is a weighing scale. Then ask:
• Have you seen something like this?
• Where do you often see this instrument?
• What are the things measured using a weighing
scale?
 When you buy rice, how is it measured? How
about chicken?

Using a weighing scale, let the pupils weigh pairs of objects.

Below are examples.
A gram of rice and a kilogram of rice
Few grams and a kilogram (or more) of fruits
 Give the learners enough time see the
difference between 1 g and 1 kg, 10 g and 1
kg, 100 g and 1 kg. Tell them that these weights
are masses of the objects.
2. Generalization
What unit of mass is best to use if the object is light?

What unit of mass is best to use if the object is heavy?

What unit is best to use in getting the mass of a bag of

rice? 6 pieces of mangoes? 1 piece of banana?

This time, teach the pupils how to read the weight of an

object. Focus first on 10 g (up to about 300) and 1 kg (up to
about 3). This is to establish only the idea that light masses are
to be measured in grams (g) and heavy ones in kilograms
(kg).

 Play a video presentation about grams and

kilograms.

C. Guided Practice

1. Setting of Standards
 What should we remember when we are doing
group activity?
2. Teacher gives differentiated activities to each group.
Group 1
 Pictorial
Group the following pictures of objects and paste
them in the correct table in measuring their
weight.
Kilograms
Grams

Group 2
What unit of mass will you use to weigh the objects in each
box? Write the name kg if it is kilogram and g if it is gram in
the blank.

1. = _____________

2. =_________

3. = _____

4. = ______

5. = ________

Group 3
Identify the picture that is weight in grams (g) .Box it.

1.

2.

3.
4.

5.

Group 4

Identify the picture which is weighed in kilograms (kg) .

Encircle it.

1.

2.

3.

4.

5.

Group 5
Identify the mass of objects as indicated on the food
wrapper or container. Write it on the blank.

1. a small pack of coffee= _____

2. a box of powdered milk= _______
3. a bag of sugar= ______
4. a pack of potato chips= _______
5. a pack of salt = _______
3. Presentation of outputs of each group.
4. Processing of output by the teacher.

5. Value Integration

 Have you experienced buying rice from a

store? Was there an instance, wherein the seller
gave you extra change? What did you do with
the extra change?
IV. Independent Practice
What appropriate unit of mass is used? Write
g for gram and kg for kilogram.

_____1. eggplants
_____2. candy

_____3. eraser
_____4.
tomatoes
_____5. corn

V. Agreement
Write the approximate mass of the following objects.
1. 1 Mathematics book
2. 4 notebooks
3. 2 pencils
4. 1 pencil case
5. 1 eraser
