Explanation
The poet was traveling aimlessly just like a cloud over the hills and valleys of the
mountainous Lake District in England. At that time, suddenly he came across a large
number of golden daffodils beside the lake and under the trees. The flowers were ‘fluttering
and dancing’ in the breeze.
The poet directly compares himself to a cloud, as he was wandering without aim, just like
the clouds. This is an example of simile (Simile is a figure of speech where two things are
compared using ‘as’ or ‘like’. He also uses the expressions like ‘crowd’ and ‘host’ to mean
that he saw a large area covered with a whole lot of daffodils. In the last line, the poet
personifies the flowers by saying that they were fluttering (like birds or butterflies) and
dancing (like human beings). There is also an indication that it was a breezy day. So we get
an overall idea of the landscape which includes the valleys and hills, the lake, the trees, the
flowers beneath them and the breezy atmosphere.
20
Stanza 2
Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the Milky Way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.
Reference
This stanza has been taken from “I Wondered Lonely as a Cloud”, also known as “The
Daffodils” written by The Romantic poet William Wordsworth.
Explanation
Here is another Simile. The flowers are compared to the stars. They stretched in a
continuous line just like the stars in a galaxy like the Milky Way. Moreover, the daffodils
were shining (as they were golden in colour) and twinkling (as they were fluttering in the
breeze) as the stars. This comparison with the stars may have a greater implication in
indicating that the flowers are heavenly as the stars.
The flowers were visible as far as the poet could see along the shore-line of a bay. That is
why he uses the phrase “never-ending line”. Here ‘continuous’ and ‘never-ending’ may also
suggest that the flowers left an everlasting impact on him.
Wordsworth exaggerates the number of flowers by saying “Ten thousand saw I at a glance”.
That indicates that the poet has never seen so many daffodils at once. So he is just
overjoyed. This type of exaggeration is called hyperbole (exaggerated statements or claims
not meant to be taken literally).
The poet also says that the daffodils were tossing their heads as if they were dancing in
happiness. Actually the poet was amazed at the beauty of the flowers. So, he found
everything around him joyful. All these references of dancing and tossing heads are parts
of his personification of the flowers.
21
Stanza 3
The waves beside them danced, but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A Poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:
I gazed—and gazed—but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:
Reference
This stanza has been taken from “I Wondered Lonely as a Cloud”, also known as “The
Daffodils” written by The Romantic poet William Wordsworth.
Explanation
The waves in the bay were dancing and looking gleeful at the atmosphere. But the flowers
outshone the lively waves in their happiness. Having such cheerful companion like the
daffodils, a poet like Wordsworth cannot help being happy. So he was gazing constantly at
the flowers and enjoying their beauty. The word ‘gazed’ is used twice to indicate how
moved or charmed the poet was. So he gazed at them for a long time, forgetting his
surroundings.
At that time, he did not think much about the ‘wealth’ that the flowers had brought to him.
The poet realized that later, may be, after a few days. This ‘wealth’ is the happiness and the
pleasant memory that he enjoyed for a long time since the day.
Stanza 4
For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.
Reference
This stanza has been taken from “I Wondered Lonely as a Cloud”, also known as “The
Daffodils” written by The Romantic poet William Wordsworth.
22
Explanation
By starting this stanza with ‘For’, the poet continues his reasoning for saying that the
flowers had brought him ‘wealth’. He clarifies why the sight of the flowers was so
important in his life. Whenever he lies on his bed in a vacant or thoughtful mood, the
daffodils flash upon his inner-eye, i.e., his imagination. The daffodils has become an
everlasting memory for the poet, whenever he is lonely. So, he calls it ‘a bliss of solitude’, a
blessing of staying alone.
And whenever he sees the flowers in his imagination, his heart fills with pleasure and his
mind dances with the dancing daffodils.
This shows the poet’s intense feelings. The poet has been able to depict the landscape and
express his mind so vividly in so simple language and form, that really draws one’s
attention. And that is why this poem has been one of the most read and mentioned
subjective poems in the history of English literature.
23
Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening by Robert Frost
Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening consists of four stanzas of four lines each. In
each stanza the first, second and fourth lines rhyme but the third line does not. The
third line rather determines the rhyme of the next stanza. For instance, in the first
stanza ‘know’, ‘though’ and ‘snow’ rhyme, but ‘here’ rhymes with ‘queer’, ‘near’ and
‘year’ in the next stanza. As an exception, in the last stanza, all four lines are rhyming
though. So the rhyme scheme is AABA-BBCB-CCDC-DDDD and it is written in
Iambic tetrameter, having four stressed syllables in each line. These are all about the
poetic elements used in the poem.
Actually the poem looks very simple in its use of language and also in the subject
matter. But what strikes us most is the use of a special form and rhyme scheme to
express the theme so fluently. To mingle the content with the structure is really a
tough task. The poem is rich in its use of figures of speech like imagery, alliteration
and personification. It also has an allegorical meaning. So this poem Stopping by
Woods on a Snowy Evening has been highly acclaimed since its publication.
25
Summary of Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening
The speaker in the poem is traveling at night through the snow and pauses with his horse
near the woods by a neighbor's house to watch the snow falling around him. His horse
shakes his harness bells, questioning the pause; perhaps this place isn't on their usual
route, or he is curious that there doesn't appear to be a farmhouse nearby. The speaker
continues to stand near the woods, attracted by the deep, dark silence of his surroundings.
He feels compelled to move further into the snowy woods, but he ultimately decides to
continue, concluding with perhaps the most famous lines of the poem: 'But I have
promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep, and miles to go before I sleep.'
Explanation
The narrator (may be the poet himself) of the poem Stopping by Woods on a Snowy
Evening stops by some woods on his way one evening. The narrator knows the owner of
the woods and even where he lives. He is a bit relaxed thinking that the owner of the woods
lives in the village and so he won’t see the narrator stopping here. Therefore he can
continue watching the natural beauty of his snow-covered woods.
Stanza 2
“My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.”
Reference
This stanza has been taken from “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” written by
Robert Frost.
26
Explanation
In the second stanza, the narrator of the poem says that his dear horse, whom he is using
as his carriage, must think it strange to stop here between the woods and the frozen lake in
a dark evening, as he normally stops near a farmhouse. The narrator calls his horse “my
little horse”, as it is very dear to him or may be the horse is a little one in the literal sense,
i.e., a pony. It may also suggest that the speaker is a humble and ordinary citizen and
cannot afford to buy an expensive horse. He also personifies the horse by indicating that it
has a thought process and also referring it as “he” in the next stanza.
In this stanza the narrator suggest that the weather is cold enough to freeze a lake. The
expression ‘darkest evening’ could suggest several things. May be the narrator-traveler was
very depressed due to his long journey or the cold weather. Otherwise it may also refer to
the longest night of the year – the night with the most hours of darkness. In that case, it is
21st or 22nd December, when the winter solstice occurs in the northern hemisphere.
Stanza 3
“He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sounds the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.”
Reference
This stanza has been taken from “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” written by
Robert Frost.
Explanation
The horse is shaking its head ringing the bell attached to its harness, as if ‘he’ is asking his
master whether there is any problem, as it is unusual for him to stop by the woods in the
darkness. And the important thing in this stanza of the poem Stopping by Woods on a
Snowy Evening is the sound imageries. There is only three sounds – the sounds of the
harness bell, light wind and the snowflakes.
27
Stanza 4
“The woods are lovely, dark, and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.”
Reference
This stanza has been taken from “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” written by
Robert Frost.
Explanation
Here in the last stanza the narrator describes the woods using three adjectives – lovely,
dark and deep. This indicates that he is enjoying the scene and wants to do so for long. But
he has other responsibilities in life. He has to go a long way before he sleeps. So he cannot
get the enjoyment for long. He has to move on. And the important thing here is that the
poet repeats the last line to attract the attention of the readers. In this very last line lies the
allegorical interpretation. Here “sleep” may refer to death. We, in our real life, have many
things to look at with awe, many things to enjoy, but in most cases we cannot simply
because we have other things to do in our short lifespan, so we have to move on.

My Dear Uncle,
Assalam-o-Alaikum,
It was a great source of pleasure to have your present received at home. It is kind of you to
remember my birthday. I can hardly express my feelings on receiving the beautiful wrist
watch you sent to me on my birthday. It is the best birthday gift I have received on my
birthday.
I was really in need of a wrist watch. I was planning to buy one but could not manage
money. My timings would have remained unregulated without a watch. This watch is really
a surprise for me. All of my friends liked and praised the watch.
How should a pay thanks to you for such an amazing gift? A word of thanks seems
worthless for this handsome present. Anyhow what else can I do now? If you were here I
would have held in your arms. Thank you so much for such a nice gift. It will remind me
your love for me.
I shall take good care of it.
Thanking you once again.
Yours affectionately

Dear Mother,
I received your affectionate letter a few days ago. I am sorry for not being able to write you

I am shocked to hear the sad news of your mother’s death. I could not believe that at once.
I am greatly grieved on this tragedy of your life. Mother is a blessing of God but the divine
rules are absolute. We are unable to understand Allah’s plans.
She was a nice lady. She had a great heart. She was so social and loving. I can remember
her soft and sweet dialect. She always loved me as her own son. She prayed for everyone
and gave wise counsels to others.
Her death is such a loss as cannot be recompensed. I advise you to bear this misfortune
with patience. Set your goals of life and do not let her soul feel bad of you. Nothing but the
time alone can soother your sorrow. All my sympathies are with you.
May her soul rest in peace

Examination Hall,
A.B.C (CITY)
My dear Iqbal,
I am pained to learn from father's letter that your health is growing from bad to worse day
by day. He has expressed great anxiety about your health. You must be very careful about
your health.
In order to improve your health you must obey the laws of health. In the first place you
must take light food. Never over eat yourself. You must not drink water with your food.
Take your evening meal three or four hours before going to bed. Secondly, you must take
exercise daily. Thirdly, you must brush your teeth arid take a bath daily. Bad teeth bring on
indigestion. Fourthly, you must go to bed early and get up early. Fifthly, you must avoid
over work because it is harmful to health. Lastly, you must give up smoking. If you observe
these rules, your health will improve in a short time. With love and best wishes,
Yours affectionately,
X.Y.Z
