The internet has been one of the major elements in our lives, it has made our lives more

convenient. However, have we ever thought of how it could affect our daily life? our way of
thinking? or our behaviour?

Music has been one of the “in” topics that we talk about with our friends and family. Music is a
great part of our lives, it defines us motivates us and keeps us going through difficult moments of
our lives. HOWEVER, Have we ever thought of how it could affect our way of thinking, acting
and behaving?

A study conducted by Valkenburg, Peter and Oosten suggested that undergraduate students and
teenagers who were exposed to music videos featuring sexual content were more likely to
endorse casual and stereotypical attitudes about sex than those assigned to a control group.

We concluded there are 3 majors consequences:

— endorsement of sexual promiscuity
— encouragement of the acceptance of women as sexual objects
— led to men having altered sexual beliefs and becoming less sympathetic to sexual abuse

In conclusion, most of the music videos are seen as catchy, rather than veiled messages to
society, which in return reinforce gender roles and stereotypes.

In lots of famous music videos, women are usually objectified and portrayed as being decorative,
vulnerable and dependent on men

Thus music videos help sustaining and perpetuating the idea of women as object and man as
dominant.
