Kinds of Verbs:
1. Action Verbs- tells what the subject is doing
a) Transitive Verb – with D.O
Jenna brings Mrs. Smit lunch everyday
I danced cha-cha.
If there is no left-over pizza, Rose usually eats whole grain cereal.
b) Intransitive Verb – without D.O
The bomb exploded in the city center.
I danced.
Because of blood sugar problems, Rose always eats before leaving for school.
2. Linking Verbs – links the subject with its predicate, it shows relationship or the state of the object.
I am glad it is Friday.
My cats are hungry.
Note: There are other verbs that exist either in action verbs or linking verbs.
3. Auxiliary or Helping Verbs- verbs that are used together with a main verb to show the verb’s tenses
or to form a negative or question.
Common Auxiliary Verbs: Have, Do and Be form.
Jerry has bought a new shirt to replace the one that was ruined earlier.
Jerry didn’t put his coffee in a cup with a lid.
Jerry is writing an e-mail to a client at the moment.
a) Modal Auxiliaries or Modals – used before ordinary verbs to express different meanings such as
permission, possibility, ability, necessity, certainty, obligations, etc.
Can and Could – ability ex. He can drive a bike.
Might and May – possibility ex. He may come now.
Shall, Will and Would – intention ex. You shall report at noon.
I will be there.
Should, Ought to and Must- necessity ex. We ought to love our brothers and sisters.
b) Primary Auxiliaries- used according to the rules of tenses.
Be – Continuous Tenses
o She is eating dinner right now.
o Caroline was skiing when she broke her leg.
o Robilyn will be running a marathon this Saturday.
Have – sentences of Perfect Tense
o I have done my homework.
o Joy had gone out when Ashley arrived in the office.
o I will have run successfully in three marathons if I can finish this one.
Do – simple of indefinite Tense
o I don’t like pizza.
o He doesn’t like pizza.
o Do you like pizza?
o Does he like pizza?
o He didn’t go home
o Did he go home?
