SHIP’S PARTICULARS
Chief Officer shall hold responsibility for the successful management of that plan.
He shall also keep control over the proper record in the Garbage Record book and
crew training and familiarisation.
The Chief Engineer shall be responsible for the operation of the incinerator and all
operations shall be entered in the Incinerator log.
All personnel to assist in the implementation of the plan by ensuring that garbage is
separated at the primary collection point (cabins/stores/mess-rooms). Suitably marked
containers have been provided for this purpose.
Garbage categories.
Category 1 : Plastics.
Category 2 : Floating dunnage, lining or packing materials.
Category 3 : Ground-down paper products, rags, glass, metal, bottles, crockery etc.
Category 4 : Paper products, rags, glass, metal, bottles, crockery etc.
Category 5 : Food waste.
Category 6 : Incinerator ash

Collection of ship’s waste.
Garbage is to be sorted into the following categories and stored in the coloured &
marked bins provided at galley, public rooms, ECR, CCR, Bridge & engine space.
All crewmembers are obligated to apply rules of waste sorting to minimise garbage
mixture.
Whenever possible the waste should be pre-treated to reduce them for storage or
disposal.
Method of pre-treatment are:
Compaction – ‘squashing’ waste into blocks which take up less space.
Comminution – grinding or pulping waste down using comminutor.
Incineration – reducing waste to ash.
INCINERATOR: Located in the engine room. Capacity: Solid waste: Max. 100 kg/hr
Waste oil: Max 80 L/hr
FOOD WASTE DISPOSAL UNIT: Located in the galley. Capacity: 150 kg/day Max
300 meals.

Storage of ship’s waste.
Garbage which can not be disposed of, are to be stored in the designated store, situated
on the Sunken Deck, Starboard side, Forward end of Engine Block.
The following persons are responsible for storing of the garbage in proper order:
IDFF shall be responsible for collecting & storage on deck.
Oiler shall be responsible for collection & storage of garbage generated in
engine-room
Messman shall be responsible for collection & storage of garbage generated in
accommodation.

Detailed description of above areas is provided in Annex V of MARPOL 73/78,
Regulation 5.
Disposal instructions.
Category 1 : Plastics.
Collected plastic garbage shall be sent to E/R and placed next to the incinerator for
burning. Clinkers of plastic garbage shall be collected and stored in the garbage locker
for eventually landing to shore facility.
Hard plastic, which can not be incinerated should be stored in the garbage locker and
send ashore.
The receipt for disposal to the shore facilities must be obtained and kept in garbage
record book.
Garbage in this category shall where possible, be retained for disposal to shore
reception facility. Garbage that can be incinerated shall be burnt. The ashes may be
disposed to sea when more than 12 miles from land. The IDFF shall, at sea do final
disposal in accordance with above table, after checking with duty officer.
Category 3 : Ground-down paper products, rags, glass, metal, bottles, crockery etc.
The IDFF & Messman at sea, shall do final disposal in accordance with above table,
after checking with the duty officer.
The IDFF shall be responsible at sea, for final disposal in accordance with above table,
after checking with the Duty officer.
The Chief Cook shall arrange to grind food waste when more than 3 miles from land.
Non-Ground food waste shall only be disposed off more than 12 miles from land.
Chief Cook shall have full responsibility for storage, handling and disposal for this
category of waste.

Category 6 : Incinerator ash
Ash from plastic garbage shall be collected in bags and when these are full should be
stowed in the garbage locker, for disposal to shore reception facility.
Ash from other garbage shall be disposed off in the same manner as specified in the
above table.
All types of ashes shall be despatched from the engine-room under supervision of the
Chief Engineer.
Oily rags and contaminated rags must be kept on board and discharged to a port
reception facility or incinerated.
If in doubt about the type of garbage being handled, the more stringent rules shall be
applied.
Training
Chief Officer is responsible for familiarisation of crew and the training in Garbage
Management Practices.
Each crewmember should be made familiar on his arrival that throwing garbage
overboard is forbidden.
Within first month after his arrival on board each crewmember should read the present
Garbage Management Plan and company procedure FIM B 12 concerning the Garbage
Disposal.
