Pharmacy Update| Volume 07, Issue 01, Apr 2019

The Pharmacy update is a sequel of Pharmacy & Therapeutic Committee and its Subcommittee’s decisions to
disseminate information to medical and nursing staff regarding different policies and formulary updates.

Betamethasone and Salicylic acid is dermatological preparation contain betamethasone &


salicylic acid, recommended for hyperkeratotic and dry steroid-responsive dermatoses.

Usual Dose Adult: Lotion: Apply thin film to affected area of scalp twice daily.
Ointment: Apply thin film to affected area twice daily

Pediatrics: Children and Adolescents: Topical: Refer to adult dosing


Renal /Hepatic
Adjustment No dosage adjustment is necessary in both renal and hepatic impairment.

FDA Labeled Combination is not approved by FDA.


Indications
Pregnancy Safety has not been established in pregnancy. Combination should only be used when
the potential benefit outweigh the risk to the fetus.

Breast feeding The percent of drug excreted in breast milk is not known. Recommend when only
clearly indicated.

Contraindication Rosacea, acne, perioral dermatitis, perianal and genital pruritus. Hypersensitivity to
any of the ingredients of the Betasalic presentations contra-indicates their use as
does tuberculosis and most viral lesions of the skin, particularly herpes simplex,
vacinia, varicella. Betasalic should not be used in napkin eruptions, fungal or bacterial
skin infections without suitable concomitant anti-infective therapy.

Adverse Effects Skin irritation, e.g. redness, rash, itching or burning sensation after applying the
ointment.
Allergic inflammation of the skin.
Drying of the skin.
Thinning of the skin.
Reduced skin pigmentation.
Stretch marks.
Fine blood vessels becoming prominent under the skin.
Excessive hair growth.

Monitoring HPA axis suppression and adrenal insufficiency, especially in children; reassess if no
Parameters improvement within 1 week of treatment.
