SUBSTATION MODEL

INTRODUCTION
 Power substation is a subsidiary station of an
electricity generation transformation system
where voltage is transformer from heigh or
medium to low.
 Example of Substation:-
 440KV/220KV
 220KV/132KV
 132KV/33KV
 33KV/11KV
 33KV/0.4KV

 PURPOSE OF SUBSTATION:-
 Performing serval important switching
function.
 May have various voltage level before it
reach the consumer.
 Owned and operated by an electrical utility or
a large industrial / commercial customer.
 Critical for generation transmission and
distribution system.
 Usually relaying on SCADA for remote
supervision and control.

EQUIPMENT USED IN SUBSTATION

 ISOLATOR
 INSULATOR
 LIGHTING ARRESTOR
 POWER TRANSFORMER
 RELAY
 CIRCUIT BREAKER
 CURRENT TRANSFORMER
 POTENTIAL TRANSFORMER
SUBSTATION MODEL
ISOLATOR
 No arc quenching medium is available in
the isolator so that it is can be open and
close on no load only.
SUBSTATION MODEL
RELAY
 A protective relay is
an electromechanical
apparatus , often with
more then one coil
designed to calculate
operating condition
on an electric circuit
and trip circuit
breaker when a fault
is detected.
SUBSTATION MODEL

CIRCUIT BREAKER
 Arc quenching medium is kept
with in the circuit breaker so that it
can be open or closed under no
load or full load
 It can operate manually and
through relays.
SUBSTATION MODEL

CURRENT TRANSFORMER
 CT working on the principales
of transformer using for
measuring higher current.
 Normally secondary current is
1A or 5 A , it provides current
signal to ammeter , wattmeter,
energy meter and relay like
over current , directional
distance and differential relay
etc. Contd...
SUBSTATION MODEL
 It's primary excited and
secondary of CT can never be
open ckt because it induces very
high voltage across the
secondary side which damage
the CT and dangerous to the
person near the CT.
 CT are always connected in
series.
SUBSTATION MODEL
• POTENTIAL TRANSFORMER

 It is working on principle of
transformer use to measure the
busbar voltage and provide
voltage signal to the voltmeter,
wattmeter and energy meter
and protecting relaying like
distance relay , busbar
protection etc.
 PT are connected in parallel.
 The standard secondary
voltage PT is 110V.
SUBSTATION MODEL
POWER TRANSFORMER
 The electricity is transmitted at
very high voltages and low
currents to reduce the heat, eddy
currents, and other transmission
losses. The substations are where
the voltages are increased to high
values by using step up
transformers, and after the
transmission, they are again
stepped down for distribution.
Contd...
SUBSTATION MODEL
 Rated in:-
 Power :100KVA
 Insulation : Cooling type
 Voltage: 33KV/11KV
 Winding connection : three phase
 Frequency: 50HZ
SUBSTATION MODEL

LIGHTING ARRESTOR
 It is first and last protecting
device of Substation.
 It is used to protect substation
equipment from the lighting
outside the substation.
 Tow or more lighting arrestor are
kept at both side of power
transformer for protection , it
from the lighting occur with in the
substation
