Distance Learning Program

Distance Learning History
The history of distance education could be tracked back to the early 1700s in the form of
correspondence education, but technology-based distance education might be best
linked to the introduction of audiovisual devices into the schools in the early 1900s
In tracing the history of distance education, the introduction of television as an
instructional medium appears as an important entry point for theorists and practitioners
outside of the correspondence education tradition, and marks parallel paths for
correspondence study and instructional media
Although instructional radio failed in the 1930s, instructional television was viewed
with new hope. In 1932, seven years before television was introduced at the New York
World's Fair, the State University of Iowa began experimenting with transmitting
instructional course
The idea of distance learning was pioneered by Sir Issac Pitman.
In it’s early stages, distance education was done through correspondence, little
interaction between the learner and the instructor occurred.
In 1969 vast improvements in the distance learning process were made with the
introduction of both written and audio teaching options.
Television and radio began to be used in the education process in the 1960s and students
were offered telephone tutors for individual or group teaching sessions.
By the 1980s there were more than 300,000 students in the US enrolled in distance
learning programs (The Journal, 99).

What is Distance Learning?

Distance education, distance learning or D-Learning - is a mode of delivering education

and instruction, often on an individual basis, to students who are not physically present
in a traditional setting such as a classroom.
Distance learning provides "access to learning when the source of information and the
learners are separated by time and distance, or both. The widespread use of computers
and the internet have made distance learning easier and faster, and today virtual schools
and virtual universities deliver full curricula online. Distance education uses a variety of
information technologies to connect students and faculty who otherwise are not able to
meet because of barriers of time or space. Because the student and teacher are not in the
same classroom, distance education focuses on promoting meaningful interaction that
overcomes the separation of the teacher and student.

OBJECTIVES OF DISTANCE EDUCATION

 To provide an efficient and less expensive method of educational instruction at a

higher level in context of national development
 To provide facilities to pursue higher education to all qualified and willing
persons who had failed to join regular university courses due to personnel and
economical reasons or because of their inability to get admission to regular
college
 To provide opportunities of academic pursuits to educated citizens through
disturbing their present employment.

CHARACTERISTICS OF DISTANCE EDUCATION

 Provides learning opportunities to individual learners and groups who may not
have the chance and time to attend formal schooling.
 Learner – centered.
 Provides learning packages designed for self- directed learning utilizing various
media, multi- media and other new technologies.
 Has an organizational structure and clear institutional systems

PROS/ Advantages of Distance Learning

Distance education does not require commuting.
You can complete most of the classes at your convenience.
Live anywhere, study from anywhere while pursuing the education of your
choice.
Gain extra knowledge.
Self-paced learning.
Accessibility.
Convenience and flexibility.
Interaction
Individualized Instruction.
Vast Resource Readily Available.
Potential.
Cost

CONS/ Disadvantages of Distance Learning

No Direct Contact with Faculty

Overdependence on Technology
Lack of Discipline:
It can get Lonely
Not All Courses are Available/ Taught
Not Valued by all Employers
Testing and Evaluation
Distance education has long had trouble with testing. The delivery of testing
materials is fairly straightforward, which makes sure it is available to the student and he
or she can read it at their leisure. The problem arises when the student is required to
complete assignments and testing. Online courses have had difficulty controlling
cheating in quizzes, tests, or examinations because of the lack of teacher control. In a
classroom situation a teacher can monitor students and visually uphold a level of
integrity consistent with an institution's reputation. However, with distance education
the student can be removed from supervision completely. Some schools address
integrity issues concerning testing by requiring students to take examinations in a
controlled setting.

4 Types of Interaction in Distance Education

 Learner content Interaction
-It takes place between the student and the content or the subject matter that is
delivered to him/her. Learner with the help of the teacher encounters new information
and knowledge
 Learner –Instructor
- Instructor helps the student to reinforce understanding of the material or
elucidate meaning. Clarify unclear points and reinforce correct interpretation of the
course
 Learner –learner
- Interaction between student and another or between several students.
 Learner –Technology/system
-Student’s experience with computers can affect their learning in distance
education as well as improve their computer skills. Student must be computer literate.

Teaching and learning are no longer confined to the classroom or the school day. There
are many technologies that can offer a great deal of flexibility in when, where, and how
education is distributed. Distances Education is rapidly becoming a strategic alternative
delivery mechanism in the global education landscape. As a educational strategy other
than the traditional face- to- face classroom setting, distance education has been adopted
to reach out remote and diverse independent learners
