1.- INTRODUCTION
Barlovento has had the opportunity to test for one and a half month the Windcube v2
LIDAR device, Power Pack version, located in complex terrain.
Throughout the test period Barlovento has carried out several tests with the Windcube
v2, located in a complex terrain area. The Windcube v2 measurements have been
compared against standard 80 m met-mast measurements (installed according to IEC-
61400-12-1 [1]).
There are some references (see [2], [3] and [4]) that have shown a good agreement
between the Windcube v2 measurements and the standard met-mast measurements
(cup anemometers) in many situations (complex terrain, offshore, power curve
measurement). This technical report assesses the behavior of the Windcube v2
measurements in a complex and forested area.
The purpose of this Technical Report is therefore to evaluate the quality of the
Windcube v2 (with PowerPack energy supply) measurements and assessing their
suitability for wind resource assessment in complex terrain.
The following parameters have been assessed and showed in the Technical Report:
- Data availability.
- Wind speed.
- Wind direction.
- Wind distribution.
- Turbulence.
- Data availability vs. Wind speed.
- Data availability vs. Temperature.
- Data availability vs. Humidity.
The Windcube v2 LIDAR device and the ARCISECO 13 metmast are located at the
South East part of Spain in Valencia region. Next figure shows the Windcube v2 and
metmast location.
2.1.- Orography
The area where the Windcube v2 is installed is a forested complex terrain. This area
consists on a mountain with the presence of high vegetation and pine trees (see
section 2.3). The ARCISECO13 metmast and the Windcube v2 are located one close
to each other (according to IEC and MEASNET recommendations [1], [5] and [6]).
Following figure shows a topographical map of the area.

According to data provided by Acciona Energy and verified by Barlovento on site visit
(10th of August 2011), the ARCISECO13 metmast is situated at an altitude of
approximately 840 m (a.s.l.). It is made up of a lattice-work mast with a height of 78 m.
Wind speed measurements are taken at 80, 73, 60 and 40 meters, by four “Vector
A100LK” anemometers. There also exist three redundant anemometers (propellers
YOUNG) at 73, 60 and 40 meters.
Directional measurements are taken at 76 meters by a Vector W200P wind vane and at
73, 60 and 40 meters by three Young propellers. Vertical wind speed is recorded at 76
meters by a Young 27106T anemometer.
Temperature and Relative Humidity data are recorded at 78 and 40 meters by two
Vaisala HMP155A sensors and pressure data is recorded at 1.5 meters by a Vaisala
PTB110 pressure sensor.
The Young sensors were installed on June 22, 2011 while the Vector sensors were
installed the same day that Windcube v2 sensor, on August 10, 2011.
A photograph of ARCISECO metmast and its surroundings can be seen in section 2.3.
The metmast characteristics can be seen in detail at the Barlovento’s installation report
[7].
The LIDAR is a remote measurement system for detection of wind and thermal
structure of the lower atmosphere. The system emits light beams pulses that are
reflected in the atmosphere and later received by the receiver, analyzing the
information the wind speed and direction received are determined. The LIDAR has
recorded ten-minute data.
The Windcube v2 LIDAR was installed by Leosphere on August 10, 2011 at 4.2 m
distance of the ARCISECO13 metmast (see figure below). The LIDAR position was
agreed between Leosphere and Acciona.

This section presents the analysis of the data recorded during the measurement
campaign performed by LIDAR technologies and meteorological tower with cup
anemometers. The measurement equipments are installed at the site of Ayora. The
wind data used in this report has been provided by Acciona and Leosphere; however
Barlovento has had access to Windcube v2 LIDAR at all times.
The ARCISECO13 Meteorological Mast was installed on June 22, 2011. The Vector
anemometers were installed on August 10-11, 2011. Barlovento has available data
from 05/08/2011 until 05/12/2011. However the data period used in this report is from
20/09/2011 until 11/11/2011, in order to compare metmast’s and LIDAR
measurements.

In order to carry out the assessment of the wind shear the measurements taken in the
ARCISECO13 metmast have been used. According to the information provided by
Acciona and checked by Barlovento during the site visit, the sensors are arranged
regarding Figure 3 and secured on support booms of approximately 2.5 m length fitted
to the mast’s (see photographs on section 2.3). Following figure shows the sector-wise
wind speed ratio between Vector anemometers and Young anemometers for wind
speeds above 2 m/s.

The Windcube v2 LIDAR was installed on August 10, 2011. However due to internal
software problems some data were missing during the first weeks, also there exists
erroneous wind speed and wind direction data due to the software bug. Finally new
software was installed in the Windcube v2 on October 21. According to Leosphere
information, on 11/11/2011 the windcube wiper was broken and therefore the data
availability falls below 50%. Moreover one solar module was stolen; this resulted in a
too low load of the battery. According to Leosphere information it probably happened
on the 18/11/2011.
The data recorded between 20/09/2011 and 21/10/2011, were reprocessed and then
available for the study.
Finally the data period used in this report is from 20/09/2011 until 11/11/2011.
Filtering applied consist in the elimination by the user of wrong data, identified
according the criteria defined in [5], as for example filtering criteria on individual data
series of level L, and filtering criteria based on completitude of wind shear up to level L.
The LIDAR data with 10-minute availability lower than 50% were also discarded
according to Leosphere indications.
Following table and figures show the availability of raw data, filtered data and the total
rejected data throughout the measurement period.
The Windcube v2 LIDAR has been operating with the power pack system (8 solar
panels) without any other power supply. The Windcube v2 LIDAR has been operational
the 74% of total time. According to the information provided by Leosphere, the 26% of
missing data are due to FCRTM prototype bug creating windsoft stops.
The following figure shows the difference between the overall raw data availability (i.e.
total data available in the reference period) called DATABASE1 and the raw data
availability discounting the FCR prototype failures called from now on DATABASE2.

Next figure shows the hourly average raw and filtered data availability at 40 m height,
as it can be seen the data availability is higher during the sunshine hours; this can be
caused by the solar panel power supply. However the minimum value of daily data
availability is also consistent with the daily minimum temperature value. The table with
the number of data per hour can be seen in appendix I.

Next figure shows the Windcube v2 data availability (% of filtered data) per wind speed
bin (41 m level) throughout the measurement period. As it can be seen the Windcube
v2 availability in the wind speed range (1 – 15 m/s) is quite good for 41 – 161
measurement levels. Nevertheless in the upper levels (up to 161 m) the data
availability is lower in the wind speed range (8 – 15 m/s). A Table with the percentage
of total filtered data can be seen in appendix I. The 100% correspond to the total
availability at 41 meters level (i.e. 5525 data, 73% of measurement period for

In order to carry out the assessment of the wind shear the measurements taken in the
Windcube v2 have been used. Following table shows the average wind shear between
different levels of LIDAR measurements for wind speeds above 4 m/s.
Following table and figure shows the sector-wise wind shear between different levels of
LIDAR.
The values of the power law exponent obtained for each one of the sectors for the
measurement period can be seen in following table and figure. Only wind speeds
above 4 m/s have been taken into account.
In addition to the restrictions mentioned, only those records were used in which all the
wind speed values at different heights are valid.
As it can be seen the wind shear value is lower for the upper levels.

Figure 30. Values of the power law exponent calculated between the different levels of
the Windcube v2 LIDAR.
In the wind shear comparison, in addition to the restrictions mentioned, only those
records were used in which all the wind speed values at different heights are valid.
The position of the anemometers is shown in the Figure 3. The wind speed data
recorded at Vector anemometers will be used in the comparison with LIDAR wind data.
These anemometers are oriented at 180°, we have discarded those observations with
wind from the sector [0 º - 15 º; 0 º + 15 º]; also have been deleted records from the
sector [135 º -15 º; 135 ° + 15 °] due to the disturbance generated in the upper level
anemometer (80 m) by the lightning catcher (see Photograph 2).
Likewise the wind data recorded by Windcube v2 in the sector [353º - 15º; 353º + 15º]
have been discarded due to the disturbance of ARCISECO13 metmast in the
Windcube v2 measurements.
The most relevant statistical wind speed characteristics between common levels of
LIDAR and metmast measurements are listed below. The measurement levels of
Windcube v2 LIDAR have been compared with the metmast levels in an independent
method. The filtering criteria based on completitude of wind shear up to level L have
not been applied for the wind speed comparison.

Figure 52. Values of the power law exponent calculated between diferent levels of the
Windcube v2 LIDAR and ARCISECO13 metmast.
The following table shows the average wind shear between different levels of
Windcube V2 LIDAR (filtering at 141 m). As it can be seen the average value between
41 and 80 meters is 0.14, while the average value between 80 and 121 meters is 0.05.

Table 16. Values of the power law exponent calculated between diferent levels of the
Windcube v2 LIDAR and ARCISECO13 metmast.
As it can be seen the wind shear values calculated from Windcube V2 measurements
and the values calculated from met-mast measurements are similar. However the wind
shear values calculated at metmast throughout the overall measurement campaign
(4278 data) are higher than those calculated at metmast during the common period
with lidar measurements (2327 data).
If we neglect the possible influence of data availability in the wind shear value (and its
associated uncertainty, which can be very important in some cases, see Ref. [8]), the
uncertainty associated to vertical extrapolation (from 80 to 100 or 120 meters for
example) can be calculated.
Using the wind speed value recording at 80 meters level of ARCISECO 13 metmast
(DATABASE-3), it is possible to verify the differences in vertical extrapolation using the
wind shear value measured between 80 and 40 meters at metmast or using the wind
shear value measured between 80 and 121 meters at Windcube V2.

The area where the Windcube is located is a complex terrain site, in this case the wind
speed uncertainty reduction due to horizontal extrapolation can be established between
0% – 1.5%, depending on size of the area selected and the number of measurement
points (where the Windcube device will be placed).
Finally, there is also an uncertainty reduction in the power curve. Using the Windcube
measurements, it is possible to measure some site-specific characteristics that may
affect the performance of the wind turbine.
For example, the measurements recorded on the site have shown that there is a
significant changein wind direction between 40 and 161 meters (rotor swept area of
120m diameter wind turbine) which can lead to an underperformance of the wind
turbine with respect to the ideal conditions (without wind turn).
There are also others factors that have been measured and which may affect the
performance of the wind turbine as flow inclination, turbulence and vertical profile.
The presence of these site-specific parameters can lead to a better wind resource
assessment and a reduction of uncertainty in power curve (AEP) up to 2% in this case.
The following table summarizes the site-specific uncertainty reduction in wind resource
assessment of this site when we use the Windcube V2 device combined with 80m mast
measurements.

5.- CONCLUSIONS
Barlovento has had the opportunity to test for one and a half month the Windcube v2
LIDAR device, PowerPack version, located in complex terrain.
There are some references that have shown a good agreement between the Windcube
v2 measurements and the standard met-mast measurements (cup anemometers) in
many situations (complex terrain, offshore, power curve measurement). This technical
report assesses the behavior of the Windcube v2 measurements in a complex and
forested area.
The purpose of this Technical Report is therefore to assess the quality of the Windcube
v2 (with PowerPack energy supply) measurements and assessing their suitability for
wind resource assessment in complex terrain.
The data period used in this report is from 20/09/2011 until 11/11/2011.
As it can be seen in tables and figures above the Windcube v2 LIDAR device the main
conclusions are:
The total rejected data of Windcube v2 LIDAR is below the 25% for all
measurements levels when data are available (74% of measurement period).
The filtered data availability (relative to 74% of total data available) is high
(84%) for all meteorological conditions up to 120 meters level throughout the
measurement period.
The Windcube v2 availability in the wind speed range (1 – 15 m/s) is quite good
for every measurement level throughout the measurement period. Nevertheless
in the upper levels (up to 141 m) the data availability is lower in the wind speed
range (10 – 15 m/s).
The Windcube v2 availability in the Temperature range (5ºC – 26ºC) varies
between 50% and 95% of total availability.
The comparison between the Windcube v2 LIDAR and ARCISECO13 metmast has
shown that:
The wind speed and wind direction measured by the Windcube v2 are quite
similar to those measured by the ARCISECO13 metmast.
The Turbulence Intensity measured by the LIDAR device is higher than the TI
measured at metmast.
The sector-wise wind shear for common levels is similar in the Windcube v2
and the ARCISECO13 metmast.
The use of Windcube V2 lidar (and in general a remote sensing device) has revealed
two site-specific features in the site, which may affect the theoretical behaviour of a
wind turbine:
