Steel towers with glass walls - such is the appearance of many modern skyscrapers . This technology has several advantages. The steel
frame is built relatively quickly, it is durable and does not require a large amount of building materials. However, the Achilles heel of
“glass” skyscrapers is their heat capacity. The sun's rays easily penetrate through the glass and heat all visible surfaces, which requires
increased costs for cooling and air conditioning. Especially this deficiency manifests itself in the southern hot areas.
How to deal with excess heat ? It is not necessary to invent never before unprecedented technology. Sometimes a significant effect can
be achieved by modernizing the old methods known for centuries. This is the decision that came up with the architects of the twin
towers Al Bahar Towers, which are being built in Abu Dhabi. To cool the skyscrapers, a modern interpretation of the old Arabic
Mashrabia style will be used.
If you look at the traditional Arab buildings, you will be struck by the beautiful architectural details, taken away by a frequent pattern of
carved wooden window grids. Once, Arab beauties, hiding behind bizarre ligature, could freely watch the world around them without
fear of opening their faces to strangers. However, the main purpose of Mashrabia is sun protection. Small holes let enough sun through ^ Top
to keep the room bright, but protect from the heat of the street.

Of course, today no one offers to cover the entire skyscraper with carved wooden cladding. It would be too expensive, and besides,
without the thick mud walls, the efficiency of the mashrabia is likely to decrease dramatically.
Architectural company Aedas has developed a solution that awarded the first prize in 2012 to the Chicago Council for High-Rise
Building and the Urban Environment (CTBUH) The technology of “ smart skin ” of Al Bahar Towers skyscrapers was created on the basis
of old building techniques. Patterns of skyscrapers are not as complex as in traditional mashrabia, but they are much more complicated
technologically. While traditional window grilles are passive, modern interpretation follows the sun, providing maximum protection at
the right time and place.
"Skin" consists of 2000 modules, umbrellas, which are closed and opened, depending on the position of the sun. Umbrellas are
controlled automatically from a single center, which can be compared with the brain of the system. Central management ensures the
coherence of work and the interaction of all elements.
According to Aedas, this approach is more effective than dark tinted windows, which inevitably restrict the flow of light at any time of
the day, while “umbrellas” are revealed only when there is a need for them. Their well-coordinated work can save energy, which is spent
not only on cooling, but also on lighting.
From an aesthetic point of view, the system can be viewed as a time-varying architectural decoration, since in different degrees of
openness, “umbrellas” fold various geometric patterns, a real mosaic of hexagonal elements.
Twin towers in Abu Dhabi will contain about 70 thousand square meters of office space. Currently, their construction is nearing
completion.
