Universal Design for Learning (UDL):
Engagement: Students are able to hear what others are saying in response to prior knowledge
Representation: The students and teacher will fill out a KWL chart before watching the video, Video will
also be in closed-captioning
Action and Expression: Students are able to say what they do or do not know about the Presidential
election
Students are able to have a written response the KWL chart and quiz
Lesson idea implementation:
Teacher will prepare a KWL chart before the lesson as well as watch and preview the video/quiz on BrainPop.
The standards will be addressed by the end of the lesson though a quiz and interactive game associated with
the software. Students will be able to share what they already know about the President and what they want

to learn in regards to the election and role of the President. With the KWL chart and the interactive games
students are able to show their progress towards learning the content and showing their understanding.
Students will be assessed through the quiz at the end of the lesson and the differentiated interactive games
within the software itself. The lesson itself will show what the students need additional instruction on before
they move on to other content that builds off of this lesson’s content. The students who need higher level
learning will be able to use the GameUp section, which allows them to pick games related to the content.
Most of the games related to the topic are higher level thinking and skill based. I will conclude the lesson by
going back to the KWL chart and filling out the what you learned section. Based on this section will also tell
me as the teacher what they understood from the lesson and what needs additional support/instruction.
Reflective Practice:
To extend this lesson, I could have added additional technology pieces like an app that allows students to
simulate going through the election process. This would increase not only the Loti level but also incorporate
an addition technology piece. Besides games there could be additional readings for those who like to read
rather than play games. This increases additional UDL components too.
