Science is very important in the 21st century.

How do you think it could be made more

appealing to young people?

Nowadays, science is an important part of the economy, health and technology among others.
despite this, the percentage of people studying scientific careers continues to decline. The
question is, how could we make science more appealing to young people? To answer this question,
it must be considered the importance that schools and society give to science, based on that here
are three ideas to do it.

First, in Chile priority is given to other types of classes such as mathematics and language, reducing
importance to classes such as science or history. For example, in many technical-professional
secondary schools, the subject of Science is taught by two years. One way to get students to
change their perspective on Science is to give the right priority to this class, gaining more time for
it, so, that teachers can take more educational classes with attractive scientific projects for them,
according to Sepulveda (2016) create groups that are able to work as a team and seek their own
answers, bringing Science to life, it is an invitation to the education of tomorrow's citizens.

Secondly, it is important to change the perception that many young people have about museums.
According to Dawson (2014), many people think that museums are places where they should only
watch and listen to a guide speak about history or science, they said that museums were not made
for young people. Yet, the truth is that in Chile there are many interactive museums that allow
young students to put into practice what they are learning; in this perspective, the learning of the
children is facilitated, it makes it much more friendly and has a greater impact on them. Creating
more publicity about these museums throughout the year, not just prioritizing it during Science’s
week, is a good idea because Science would be promoted in different newspapers and social
networks since many people are unaware of the existence of such museums. A good example of
this is the Museo interactivo Mirador (MIM) which for a low price allows you to learn science while
you are having fun.

Finally, television programmes are a good way to promote science. Why are television programmes
a good idea to promote science? “Television is one of the most important media that has existed,
and this is so because it is free, as well as easy to access, allows millions of people around the
world to turn to it immediately and easily” (Bembibre, 2011) based on the importance of television
in people's daily lives, this is a good way to promote science to all kinds of people. For example, a
programme where a scientist goes out and makes the passersby participate in various scientific
experiments, it would be entertaining and not only teach viewers, but also the participants.

In conclusion, innovative ways of encouraging young people to take an interest in science should
be sought, but we must also think about changing them in a deeper cultural way, and eliminate the
belief that learning science is only for people who have the resources to pay for it, which is why we
must appeal to the participation of schools and educational centres.
