BUDGET PROPOSAL FOR THE DESIGN AND INNOVATION CENTRE

Introduction

The field of Design has acquired new dimensions over the years encompassing different
disciplines, wide spectrum of ideas, identities and entities, and opened up channels of
opportunities to regenerate, explore and innovate by exchanging and connecting with diverse
creative talents and skills. The Design and Innovation Centre perceived by the School of
Planning and Architecture, Vijayawada (SPAV) strives to harness these prospects of the field of
Design by integrating education, industry, tradition and culture within a collaborative
framework, by tying up with artisans, institutions and designers. The Centre will focus on
revitalization and promotion of traditional arts and crafts in the Southern and Eastern coastal
region of India, with the scope pertaining to five states namely Andhra Pradesh, Kerala,
Karnataka, Odisha and Tamil Nadu.

Collaborations

The Design and Innovation Centre is intended to serve as a resource and knowledge centre, and
provide incubation and training to artisans and designers, and facilitate industry interactions.
SPAV has signed a MOU with the Andhra Chamber of Commerce and Industry. SPAV has
interfaced with MSME Auto cluster in Vijayawada, Kalamkari association at Pedana, Sri
Kalahasti, Kondapalli and Etikoppaka toy makers association and other crafts villages in Durgi,
Dharmavaram (Andhra Pradesh), and Raghurajpur (Odisha). SPAV has partnered with IIT
Bombay as a spoke, for the initial phase of the Design and Innovation Centre.

Activities

The Design and Innovation Centre first of its kind among the SPAs started its first initiative to
connect with the artisans of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha by organizing a 'Live Demonstration
Workshop' during the celebration of World Heritage Day on 17.04.2015, highlighting the
cultural and built heritage of this historic region.

Proposed Activities of the Centre in collaboration with SPA, Delhi

Documentation and Research

 To document and prepare a data base of temple architecture, and traditional arts and
crafts of the Southern and Eastern coastal region of India.
Setting up Laboratory

 Setting up of High performance computing facility.

 3D printers for making designer printing blocks to come up with innovative product
prototypes.
 Setting up of material workshop for designing innovative drudgery reduction tools and
techniques.

Outreach programs

 To organize capacity building and entrepreneurship program

 National level workshops by traditional sthapathy who are involved in temple
construction historically and the artisans for exchange of knowledge and skill with the
SPA students.
 National level Design competitions
 Use already established artisan web portal under the SPA website for creating a platform
for exchange of ideas on design, colors and to facilitate marketing for the artisans.

Education program

 Imparting online courses in Design and product development.

 Offering Design related elective subjects in the UG/PG level of all the existing
educational program.
 Including scope of architectural, industrial and crafts product designing in the UG/PG
final year Thesis.

Innovation

 Industrial Research
 Studio for contemporary application of ideas in Interior Design and Product Design
 Patent filing

Summary - The total budgetary estimate for the proposed activities of the Design and
Innovation Centre works out be Rupees 1,00,00,000 for three years.
Clay and other art forms near Etikoppaka

Kumari panai is a form of clay art practiced near Etikopakka (65 km from Visakhapatnam). This
art form, if customized, can be utilized as good acoustical and thermal insulation materials.

1. As an acoustic diffuser

The main role of acoustic diffuser is to distribute sound evenly throughout the room.
Generally diffusers are imported to give good acoustical effects in the recording studios,
conference & lecture halls etc. Tumbler like objects made of Clay (Kumari Panai) if placed
in appropriate combinations as cladding elements on the wall, can work well as an acoustic
diffuser (Fig 1).

Etikoppaka toys and crafts are known for its roundness and glossy finish. Such kind of
finishes and roundness are good for acoustic diffusers. Hence this property can be explored
through experimental and simulation studies in detail with the help of design and Innovation
center. Fig 1b shows the appropriate shape for Etikoppaka toys.

2. As Helmholtz resonators

Helmholtz resonators are cavity resonators, which is very effective for arresting the low and
mid frequency noise and vibration. Low frequency noise will create disturbance and
excessive vibration in small rooms. The clay pots, if it is fabricated according to the
specified dimensions and high precision it can be utilized as cavity resonators in the
recording and post production studios interiors. Fig 2a and 2b shows the design of cavity
resonator and it frequency response respectively.

SPAV has proposed to establish a sophisticated acoustical laboratory. With the help of this
laboratory, it is possible to do extensive research on Acoustical properties of these
materials and crafts. Quantification regarding NRC (Noise Reduction Criteria), and
diffusion properties can be achieved through this facility.

3. Thermal Insulation material

Clay tumblers, if packed and arranged effectively in roofs/ walls, it can act as a thermal
insulation material. A conceptual sketch is shown for such arrangement is shown in fig 3.
SPAV’s environmental laboratory has instruments such as Thermo couples, Temperature
probe(TESTO 425), Thermal imaging camera, etc. with the help of these instruments it is
possible to quantify the heat transmittance (U value) for such composite structures.

4. Kalamkari and Etikopakka arts & crafts for designing innovative Interior elements and
office and house hold products.

Kalamkari arts and Etikkopakka crafts concepts can be integrated to

design creative interior elements and house hold products such as
lanterns & lamp shades, wooden vase, wall panels, partitions and
office stationary items such as designer folders, pen stands, degree
certificate holders etc. Fig 4 shows the photograph degree certificate
holder.
