A report of the first phase of the Web
Development Training organised by
clickITnigeria.

Tutors:

Ebuka Anisiobi

Introduction

The two week long training was put together by clickITnigeria as part
of its community service to young people. It was organised for 2nd
year [going to 3rd year] undergraduates of the Obafemi Awolowo
University Ife. 15 students participated in all. It was a free training
program but the students contributed little funds themselves to get the
available resources for the training.

The training was both theory and practical oriented. As much as the
students were taught in books, they were also shown how they could
get their work done on the computer system.

Content.

During the training participants were introduced to computers and the

internet which many of them already knew but the few that had not
seized the opportunity to learn.

Participants were taught the basics of the Hypertext Mark up language

(HTML) and how to use application software to develop websites. They
were also taken through graphic packages. At the end of the training,
projects were given out to the participants, which they took up with
enthusiasm.

Outcome.

As a result of limited access to computer systems, participants were

encouraged to use time sharing to use the computer systems
available. The participants were also taken one by one as the resources
to give a large, one –for- all lessons were not available.

To a great extent this was effective, because the participants had a
close discussion with the tutors. However a future issue that must be
addressed to get a very successful outcome is that of access to
computer systems and public address systems for a large number of
students.

Another problem faced by the training was access to the internet.

Classes that were supposed to be taken on the internet were delayed
till there was access because of the type of access available to the
participants.

Of the 15 that participated, only two people had problems with the
classes. This was largely due to the fact that, they were just introduced
to how systems work.

At the end of the training, Tutorial CDs on Web Development and

Information Technology tools were given out to participants for them to
keep learning.

Challenge Problem

While preparing for a future class/the second phase, the clickITnigeria

team will try as much as possible to get enough computer system for
the classes. We are also using his medium to call that you take action
and support the program. It could be in cash or in kind. Presently,
clickITnigeria needs computer systems of its own. One thing we know
is that, the little skills imparted will go along way in reshaping
someone, someone's destiny.

Overview and Conclusion

The training was a successful one. In fact, the youths that missed out
want clickITnigeria to organise another of its kind. As a follow up to the
trained students, clickITnigeria is getting all those that participated to
form a Web Development club.

Despite the fact that the resources were limited, the tutors still went
ahead employing all methods to get the knowledge across to the
participants. What made the classes interesting was also the openness
of the participants and their zeal to learn.

Its was also a success story going by the number of ladies that
participated. Since all over the world there is an acute shortage of

ladies in information technology, the fact that in this training, majority
were ladies gave us a hope that gradually, ladies are warming up to
give the men folk a challenge in Information Technology.
