EDUCATION IN INDONESIA

Education is learning the knowledge, skills, and habits of a group of people passed
down from one generation to the next through teaching, training, or research. Education is a
conscious and planned effort to realize learning and the learning process for students to
actively develop their potential to have religious spiritual strength, self-control, personality,
intelligence, noble character, and the skills needed by themselves and society. Besides
education can also be interpreted as a learning process for students to be able to understand,
know, and make humans more critical in thinking and and to achieve a standard of living or
for better progress.

And the purpose of education itself is to educate the life of the nation and develop
Indonesian people as a whole, namely people who believe and are devoted to God Almighty
and noble character, possess knowledge and skills, physical and spiritual health, a strong and
independent personality and a sense of responsibility answer to society and nationality. With
education, it will arise in a person to compete and motivate ourselves to be better in all
aspects of life. Education is one of the conditions for further advancing this government, so
try education from elementary school to university level. Essentially education aims to shape
the character of someone who is faithful and fearful of God Almighty. But here education
only emphasizes on intellectuals, with evidence that the existence of the National
Examination is a benchmark for educational success without looking at the process of
character building and children's character. in addition to education also aims for creating a
quality person and character so that it has a wide view of the future to achieve an ideal of
what is expected and able to adapt quickly and appropriately in a variety of environments.
Because education itself motivate ourselves to be better in all aspects of life.

Developed countries certainly cannot be separated from education. The higher the
quality of education of a country, the higher the quality of human resources that can advance
and enhance the country. So how is about education in Indonesia? And what should we do so
that education in Indonesia is better?
Education in Indonesia is now very good. However, the world of education in
Indonesia still has several obstacles related to the quality of education, including limited
access to education, the number of teachers who are not evenly distributed, and the quality of
teachers themselves is still considered lacking. Limited access to education in Indonesia, even
more so in regions leading to increased urbanization to get better access to knowledge in
urban areas. According to Indonesian education activists, Anies Baswedan has limited access
to education in the region to become the basis of the swift flow of urbanization. The problem
is that in Jabodetabek the amount is proportional, but don't just talk urban. It is precisely
outside of that city that we have a problem and that causes migration to Jakarta. Indirectly,
Indonesian people are encouraged to do urbanization due to limited facilities in the area. He
considered that access to education should be opened to the widest possible extent for all
communities by providing facilities that support the program. If the school is only in the
capital city of the sub-district, then that is far away so you can't go to school. In addition, the
number of teachers in accordance with the current qualifications is still considered not evenly
distributed in the regions. According to the Director General of Basic Education (Basic
Education) of the Ministry of Education and Culture Hamid Muhammad currently many
elementary schools (SD) in Indonesia lack teachers. The number is estimated to reach 112
thousand teachers. To overcome this, the Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikbud)
will cooperate with local governments, both at the provincial and district / city levels, in
terms of distributing teachers in the regions to be more equitable. If teacher management can
be handled more optimally, it is not partial, it can be moved to a neighboring district or area.

Then, to improve the quality of teachers, the Ministry of Education and Culture will
improve teacher qualifications through undergraduate scholarships for elementary and junior
high school teachers. Hamid explained, the number of elementary teachers in public and
private schools is around 1,850 thousand teachers. Of these, only 60 percent of teachers have
fulfilled the qualifications with the bachelor's degree, while the other 40 percent have not met
the qualifications. Every year, the Ministry of Education and Culture also prepares
scholarships for 100 thousand prospective teachers to study for S-1 through S-1 scholarship
assistance for elementary and junior high school teachers. Internationally, the quality of
education in Indonesia ranks 64th out of 120 countries around the world based on the annual
report of the UNESCO Education For All Global Monitoring Report 2012. While based on
the Education Development Index (EDI), Indonesia is ranked 69 of 127 countries in 2011.
On the other hand, school dropout cases for school-age children in Indonesia are also
still high. "Based on data from the Ministry of Education and Culture 2010, there are more
than 1.8 million children in Indonesia who cannot continue their education each year, this is
due to three factors, namely economic factors. children are forced to work to support the
family economy and marriage at an early age, "according to Secretary of the Directorate
General of Higher Education Dr. Ir. Patdono Suwignjo, M. Eng, Sc in Jakarta. In the 2013
UN Development Program, Indonesia occupies 121 of 185 countries in the Human
Development Index (HDI) with a number of 0.629, with Indonesia lagging behind the two
ASEAN neighbors, namely Malaysia (ranked 64) and Singapore (18), while HDI in the Asia
Pacific region is 0.683.

from the explanation above we can conclude that education in Indonesia is now good
but there are still some obstacles and this is our duty as the next generation and the
government to make education in Indonesia even better.
