PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:

● Introduction: Have you ever watched how a butterfly grows or seen how it transforms from a
caterpillar? Well for the next 30 days we are going to watch these sweet little caterpillars become
beautiful butterflies, as well as, learn about their life cycle. You are going to use your iPads to make a
comic strip as well as a graphic organizer. On both of these assignments you are going to show the life
cycle of the butterfly.
● Procedures:
○ Activity 1
■ Teacher will show the students how to complete a comic strip on ToonDoo.
■ Teacher will then discuss what she expects from the students and a couple guidelines.
■ Teacher will have the URL written on the board for the students to put into their iPads.
■ The teacher will go step by step with the students to show them how to make a free
account and how to pick a template.
■ When the students are finished they will print out their comic strip to turn in.
■ After the students have turned in their comic strips and are back at their tables they can
discuss with their table what they have learned so far.
○ Activity 2 (will be done at the end of the observation)
■ Teacher will show the students how to complete a graphic organizer on Kidspiration.
■ Graphic organizer should include the different stages of the life cycle and a couple facts
they saw during the observation. The graphic organizer should include different shapes
and colors.
■ The students will print out their graphic organizer to turn in.
○ Activity 3
■ The students will make a journal with construction paper on the outside and staple
notebook paper on the inside.
■ They will then draw butterflies on the front of their journals and color them.
■ Each day during the observation the students will write down a couple things they notice
that are different each day like size, color, shape, or the diet of them. Some days there
may be no change which is okay.
■ At the end of the observation the students will turn in their journals.
Closure: At the end of the lesson and the students have turned in all their assignments they will
be going a matching handout to make sure they understand the life cycle.
