QUESTION 1 [25 MARKS]

A heat flux meter is used to determine convection heat transfer over a plane wall. The sensor
has a small geometrical dimension and use a thermopile to measure the temperature difference
across a 0.2 mm thick thin conducting film made of kapton.
(a) The flux meter is positioned at a location on a 0.8 m high and 1.5 m wide glass window of 8
mm thickness. The surfaces of the window is exposed to outdoor and indoor surroundings.
Sketch the schematics of the physical situation and indicate the thermodynamics state at the
surfaces of fluxmeter and windows [5 Marks]

(b) State assumptions for solving the following engineering problems [5 Marks]

(c) Determine the minimum heat flux if the flux meter can only detect temperature difference
more than 0.1 °C. [7 Marks]

show how calculations/estimation are being made

QUESTION 2 [25 MARKS]

Carbon steel balls of 8 mm diameter is annealed by heating to 900 °C in a furnace followed by
cooling to 100 °C in ambient temperature.
(a) Sketch the schematics of the physical situation and indicate the relevant thermodynamic
states [5 Marks]

(b) State assumptions for solving the following engineering problem [S Marks]

(c) Determine the required cooling time if the averaged heat transfer coefficient due to natural
W

QUESTION 3 [25 MARKS]

A 6 cm-diameter shaft rotates at 3000 revolution per minute in a 20 cm-long jurnal bearing with
a uniform clearance of 0.2 mm. The temperature of bearing and shaft at the vicinity of the oil
gap are at 50 °C
(a) Sketch the model of heat transfer system [5 Marks]

(b) State assumptions for solving the following engineering problem [5 Marks]

(c) Estimate the maximum temperature of the oil. Give reasoning on the computed temperature
if viscous heating in the fluid is significant. [7 Marks]

QUESTION 4 [25 MARKS]

In a production facility of a metal processing factory, a 10 cm-thick hot brass plate at uniform
temperature of 650 °C is having its upper surface cooled by impinging jet of air. The bottom
surface of the plate is insulated to improve the cooling process.
(a) Sketch the schematics of physical situation during the cooling process [5 Marks]

(b) State assumptions for solving the following engineering problem [5 Marks]

(c) Tabulate and plot the temperature history at the mid plane of the plate for the first 3 minutes
of cooling. [15 Marks]
