Angle of Elevation and Depression Problems

1. A person on top of Trump Tower looks down at an object. If the person is 664 ft above
the ground and the angle of depression is 47°, how far is the object?

cos (Θ) = A/H

cos (47) = 664/x

x = 664/cos (47)

x = 973.609379 f t

2. A person sits in a box seat of an opera house. If the person is 68 ft away from the stage
and the person is 54 ft above the ground, what is the angle of depression?

cos (Θ) = A/H

cos (x) = 52/68

x = cos−1 (52/68)

x = 40.1191669°
3. A lost person in a vacant town sees a search rescue helicopter. If the person is 1320 yd
away from the helicopter and the angle of elevation is 33°, how high above the ground is
the helicopter?

sin (Θ) = O/H

sin (33) = x/1320

x = 1320 · sin (33)

x = 1319.883655 f t

4. A person plans to climb a mountain. If the top of the mountain is 3427 ft above ground
and the angle of elevation is 86°, how far is the person from bottom of the mountain?

tan (Θ) = O/A

tan (86) = 3427/x

x = 3427/tan (86)

x = 1423.923919 f t
