ARTIFACT: WATI & Assistive Technology Plan Unstructured Field Experience

The WATI and Assistive Technology Plan was completed in the ITEC 7445 Multimedia and
Web Design in Education course. This artifact was implemented at Liberty Point Elementary,
which is one of the schools that I support as an instructional technology coach. This artifact
highlights the setting, lesson, and resources that were used to support a third grade SEC student.
While the development of the assistive technology plan was done independently, the details of
the plan were supported through collaborating with the third grade SEC teacher and with
information from the student’s IEP.

The description, knowledge, and dispositions sections of the field log experience indicate what I
learned from this experience. The WATI Assistive Technology Plan demonstrates the ability to
facilitate the use of adaptive and assistive technologies as it was centered around the inclusion
of the Google Chrome extension Snap and Read that reads text on webpages. The assistive
technology plan included the equipment, implementation team, equipment tasks, trainings
needed, classroom implementation supports, home implementation supports, and strategies for
monitoring and evaluating the implementation of the tools. Although Snap and Read was only
intended to be implemented with the third grade student, the assistive technology plan was
developed with the entire LPES SEC staff in mind. Ensuring that the Snap and Read extension
was pushed out to available devices and that SEC teachers received appropriate training were
some of the strategies outlined to support the use of this assistive technology tool. With
consideration to the student identified within this plan, Snap and Read was selected as an
appropriate tool, as their IEP goals involved developing proficiency with reading to support
academic achievement.

This field experience involved learning about appropriate and effective methods of leveraging
assistive technology to service/support students. It provided me with a space to work with SEC
students using technology, Snap & Read’s Google Chrome Extension, and digital resources in a
co-taught third grade classroom. Conducting this field experience allowed all stakeholders
(myself, classroom teachers, and students) to learn about effective ways of using this district
supported tool as assistive technology. As an instructional coach, it is key to have an
understanding of a variety of available resources for all learners, regardless of their
exceptionalities. Aside from the teacher and student enjoying our time together, I would also
appreciate opportunities to extend this resource to LPES’ other SEC teachers to use with their
students.

This field experience provided a space for LPES SEC teachers to have dialogue about the
assistive technology tools that are available for their students. Presenting this tool to teachers
could provide them with additional strategies that they can use with their students for
teaching/learning and assessing. Hopefully. the SEC chair will provide opportunities for me to
support teachers with trainings on how to use Snap and Read in the future. Students would
benefit from having a tool that unlocks their ability to comprehend text even if they are not
reading at grade level.
