Promise Defines Honor.

Everybody should honor their promises. Chaucer is a medieval time author. He is known

as “Father of Literature”. The first one to write in English. The Wife of Bath is a story about a

man that is sentenced to death, but, this man was the favorite at the court. The Queen said to the

guilty knight “you can tell me what is that women wish for most, then your life shall be spared”.

He leaves and looks for the answer. Then an old woman gave him the truth, but, he will return

her the favor so he agree. The Queen had mercy so he was free. Then the old woman talk to the

knight and told him to remember about his promise to do the first thing that she wanted, so she

ask him to marry her, and even that he did not want to do it, he did.

Chaucer defines honor throughout the story by showing by showing how the knight

honor his promises, and also honor love by accepting someone’s perspective. In this story a

knight made a deal with and old lady, and that show honor because he had to keep that promise.

He made a promise to a lady that he would do anything if she tells him what the woman most

want. “By my faith as a knight I promise you… he would have promised anything to anyone who

would give him the slightest hope of safety” (Chaucer 2). Chaucer, also defines honor when he

saw that the secret that the old lady told him was going to save his life. The knight did not

wanted to marry the old lady, but, to keep his honor, he married her. The author states; “There

was no help for it, however, he must take the old crone for his wife, and so he married her: but

you may know that there was no merriment and no feasting at that wedding” (Chaucer 3). He

shows his honor because he keep the promise that he had with the old lady, even that he did not

wanted to. The knight shows that when he does a promise, he has to do it to protect his honor.

Chaucer defines love and honor, and it is very important in this tale it teaches how people

should act, how people needs to do what they say and, also, that we have to see people in what

they have in the inside and not in the outside. It show us what true love is. We can learn in this

story that honor, love, and gender-role is important to have a good life, because that means that

people respects each other’s.
