Task 2 : Fire Extinguishers and Application

2.1 Fire Extinguishers in Mechanical Lab.

The fire-extinguishers that are in the mechanical lab was from class A
(co2) it is used for any flammable liquid fires Being non-toxic and
leaving no residue, CO2 will not harm machinery or electrical
equipment.

There is also class B fire extinguisher which is from dry powder. It is

highly effective against petrol and volatile liquids which makes them
ideal for vehicle protection. My college and found many machineries
that use petrol and this extinguisher is useful in case of accident.

2.2 Fire Detector in Mechanical Lab.

Wireless Smoke Detector Fire Alarm Battery operated from Touch

Panel the no. of the sensor is 1164.

This sensor is installed in mechanical lab to detect the fire and send
alarm to inform the workers who are working inside the lab.

Task 3 : Fire Accident Investigation

Dubai's Torch tower fire

3.1 Introduction/Background:

The place was in Dubai's Marina Torch tower, it was in August 4,2017. The fire started at
12:45am and the firefighters controlled the fire at 2:58am. I chose this incident because it
related to what I learned in the Health, Safety & Environment course. It showed the cause
and the source of the fire and how the firefighters controlled the fire.

3.2 Causes:

The cause of the fire at the Torch Tower in Dubai Marina have been due to cigarette butts
being thrown into a potted plant which began to burn slowly until it caught fire. The Fire
Triangle is existed in the incident which are Fuel, Oxygen and Heat. The fuel was the potted
plant and the oxygen is already existed in the air and the heat source was the cigarette.

3.3 Damages / Effects:

The 676-apartment tower, among which 84 floors are residential and three are used for
services, was quickly evacuated. There were no casualties in the blaze in Dubai Marina,
and the fire started on the 26th floor, although authorities said it had damaged 38
apartments over 64 floors, up to the 84th. According to Kingfield Owner Association
Management Services, the building management company for Torch Tower, "most of the
damage was limited to the exterior cladding". And the fire slightly damaged the interior of
the 83rd and 84th floor.

3.4 Fire Fighting:

Firefighting squads from six civil defense stations, including Al Marsa station, UAE
martyrs station, Al Quoz, Al Rashidiya, Al Barsha and Port Saeed stations were deployed
to bring the fire under control and ensure safety of residents besides the marine rescue
team. Firefighters reached the scene within four minutes after receiving a report on the fire
at 12.45am. The participation of different authorities helped to put out the fire at 2.58am
and cooling operations started right after.

3.5 Corrective control:

Colonel Rashid Khalifa Bu Flasa, Director of Fire and Rescue Department, told Gulf
News that community awareness is critical to reducing the prevalence of fires. He said
“After investigations, we find that mostly wrong practices, lack of knowledge, and
certain habits within the community are the cause of fires. This is the reason why we
always carry out awareness campaigns.”

3.6 Summary:

The cause for this fire was an accidental fire caused by a cigarette that threw into a potted
plant which began to burn slowly until it caught fire. We learned that the fire is a
chemical reaction between oxygen and a combustible fuel. And there are three elements
are required to start and sustain fire which are fuel, oxygen and heat. So, we learn from
that if we want to control a fire we can just remove one of these three elements. In
addition, there are five types of fire extinguisher which are water, foam, CO2, powder
and wet chemical. Each one is signed to different type of class of fire. We recommend
that every person should know how to fight the fire and know how to use the fire
extinguisher and differentiate between each type of fire extinguisher. Finally, the
government should always carry out awareness campaigns to aware people about their
behavior if they face a fire.

Conclusion

In conclusion, we were very satisfied about this experiment because we applied what we learned
from the HSE course. Now we know each type of fire extinguisher and the class of fire. We did
best in the task 3 because we gained knowledge and information about firefighting. Finally, We
recommend that if we take course of how to use the fire extinguisher.
