B. Understanding Elements

 Origin of the word SPA

There are many theories as to the origin of the word spa. Some claim that theword derives from
several Latin axioms, including sanus per aqua meaning “health through water.”

According to Johnson and Redman (2008), many Latin renditions can be used to obtain the word
spa. Each has “health, hygiene, or healing” in its interpretation and includes the Latin word for
water, aqua.

The word spa may also originate from the Latin words spargere, sparsi or sparsameaning to
scatter or sprinkle or the Walloon word espameaning fountain(Walloon is spoken today in
many areas of Belgium.)

 What is the definition of a spa?


- A spa can be a mineral spring, a resort, a hot tub with air jets or a business providing
health, fitness, weight loss, beauty and pampering services. Since the beginning of
time, water has been used for purification, cleansing and healing; bodies of water
have attracted visitors for reasons of health, recreation, relaxation and to socialize.
- Spa began as a word to describe relaxing water experiences, healing towns with
mineral springs, or the natural springs themselves.
- The word now most often used to name business concerned with health and beauty.
- Spas are places devoted to enhancing overall well-being through a variety of
professional services that the renewal of mind, body, and spirit.

 What are the three key elements of the definition?


- “Health, Hygiene, and Healing”

 How much economic impact does the spa industry have on the global economy?
- The spa industry is booming. It is estimated that over $250 billion a year is generated
by the global economy.

 Identify the core, enabled, and associated industries that make up the global spa
economy.
-Approximately $60 billion in core spa industries and another $194 billion in “spa-
enabled” industries (Global Spa Summit, 2008).

 Name the nine different types of spas


-Day Spa, Medical Spa, Day Club Spa, Mobile Spa, Mineral Spring Spa, Resort/Hotel
Spa, Cruise Ship Spa, Destination Spa and Residential Club Spa.

 What key elements help differentiate the types of spas?

 Day club spa- Day club spas emerged from fitness clubs looking to provide more
comprehensive wellness offerings to their customers.

 Day spa-Day spas is a business that’s provides a variety of services for the purpose of
improving health, beauty and relaxation through personal care treatments such as
massages and facials.Day spas typically offer less costly spa experiences and many focus
on beauty treatments.

 Cruise ship spa-It is a spa that operates on board a cruise ship and provides
professionally administered spa and wellness services to passengers.
Serve exclusively those on a cruise vacation.
Cruise ship are small in number than resort spas.

 Destination spa-It is an extended-stay resort with the primary purpose of providing


guests with healthy lifestyle services.
Destination spas have health, wellness and “spa-ingas the focal point of the visit.
Modern destination spas encourage stays of a week or longer but usually do allow shorter
stays.

 Medical spa- Medical spas are the fastest growing segment of the spa industry. Unlike
day spas, medical spa services can include skin injections (Botox and fillers), cosmetic
dental services and laser based skin care, some of which may allow for insurance
reimbursement.

 Mineral spring spa- It is a business that offers an on-site source of natural mineral,
thermal, or sweater used on professionally administered hydrotherapy treatments.
The size of the spa may determine many of the business attributes, but it is the “spring”
that makes it unique.

 Mobile spa-It is “spa on wheels” wherein spa professionals bring the spa to the client.
- Mobile spas provide on-site spa services at special events, parties or in the comfort
for the client’s home or hotel room.

 Residential club spa- is a residential lifestyle community with the primary purpose is to
provide the owners with a healthy living environment.It offers home & condominium
owners fitness activities, professionally administered spa treatments, wellness education
and healthy cuisine right their “own backyard.”

 Resort/Hotel spa-It is a business that operates as a division of and within a resort or
hotel.They serve mainly their vacationing guests and it is second largest segment of the
spa industry, representing of the total number of spas in the United States.
