Expert System

As we know that one is expert in a subject, one is expert in playing cricket, one is expert in science
subject. It means that he knows much more about his field then anybody who is not expert in that
field. These people are expert in that respective field, because they know a great deal about their
field. These are able to answer questions that require knowledge of their subject. Expert system is
also the same thing. If we ask some questions from any Expert, the expert needs to have some
knowledge about his field or subject. So we can define expert system as

 An intelligent computer program that uses knowledge and regular methods of conclusion
to solve problems that are difficult enough require significant human expertise for their
solutions.

OR

 An expert system is a computer system which can act as a human expert written one
particular field of knowledge

Characteristics of expert system

 This branch of AI uses a lot of specialized knowledge to solve problems. It knows a lot about a
narrow field rather then something. about everything.

 Expert system is analogous to human experts is a certain area that are not known to most
people.

 Expert system should be medium sized and should not be complicated.

.
 An expert system must show a satisfactory level of performance in terms of both the speed and
its reliability.
Structure of expert system
The basic structure of expert system is as:

1. User interface.
2. Knowledge base.
3. Inference engine.

User interface:
The user interface is that part of expert system by which user can communicate with
the expert system. An ideal expert system allows to type(or speak) his questions to the
system in English, the system then recognizes the meaning of the questions and users.
Its (system’s) inference engines apply the rules in the knowledge base to deduce an
answer. This answer would then be communicated back to the user in simple English.
Its range is from simple I/O devices to sophisticated natural language dialogs and
commands.

Knowledge base :
The knowledge base comprises (consist of) a series of facts and rules about a particular
problem area from which the system can draw its expertise (problem domain).

Infrance Engine :
The inference engine has ability to look through knowledge base and apply the rules to
the solution of a particular problem.

Components of an Expert system :

Knowledge base

Inference engine
Usefulness of an expert system:
 Solutions of human experts are increasing continuously .the cost of developing
and maintaining expert systems continue to decrease.

 Human experts require educational in millions of rupees, whereas expert

system can be copied (or reproduced) on negligible cost.

 Human experts can use their expertise for very limited time, whereas expert
systems can be used for ever. I.e. the expertise of an expert system is
permanent.

 Human experts cannot continue their work for very large time, whereas expert
systems can do some work as many time as are like.
