Case Study of Cooling Load Estimation
Venue: Seminar Hall of Computer Engineering Department
Problem Statement:
Determine the cooling capacity of air conditioner proposed for seminar hall of mechanical
engineering deptt., on the basis of following available inputs:
Area = 200 m2
Height = 4 m
Nos of occupant = 180
Nos of fluorescent tube = 26, Capacity of each = 20 W
Nos of filament lamp = 15, Capacity of each = 30 W
Nos of door = 2, Door area = 3.6 m2 each
Nos of window = 3, Window = 5.4 m2 each
Air change per hour (G) = 2
Overall heat transfer coefficient for triple glass window (U) = 1.59 W/ m2 0C
Overall heat transfer coefficient for wall (U) = 1.54 W/ m2 0C
Latent heat load by a occupant = 44 W
Sensible heat load by a occupant = 53 W

Use suitable safety factor as well as duct heat gain.

Condition of air: Inside DBT = 23 0C, WBT = 13 0C
Outside DBT = 40 0C, WBT = 27 0C
(Refer standard tables for selection of ‘U’ and other values given in the chapter Cooling Load
Estimation, Khurmi-Gupta/Arora-Domkundawar or any other standard reference book)

Solution Methodology
Inside air condition: Tdbi = Twbi =

Outside air condition: Tdbo = Twbo=

1) Heat transfer from a glass window (Qwin) -

Qwin = UAΔT = UA(Tdbo- Tdbi)

Nos of window = 3

Net heat transfer from windows (Qwin) = 3 × Qwin

Qwin = W

2) Heat transfer from walls:-

From north wall (QWN) = UAΔT Area of north wall (A = 40 m 2)

RAC Lab.,Mech.Engg.Deptt. SITRC,Sandip Foundation
= UA(Tdbo- Tdbi)

From south wall (QWS) = UA(Tdbo- Tdbi) Area of south wall (A = 36.4 m2)

QWS = {A = Area of wall - Area of door}

From west wall (QWW) = UA(Tdbo- Tdbi) Area of west wall (A = 76.4 m2)

QWW = {A= Area of wall - Area of door}

From east wall (QWE) = UA(Tdbo- Tdbi) Area of east wall (A = 63.8 m2)

QWE = {A = Area of wall - Area of windows}

Net heat transfer from walls to room (QWALL):-

QWALL = QWN + QWS + QWW + QWE

QWALL =

3) Infiltration load due to outside air = (Area of room × Height × G)/60 m3/min

Qin1 = m3/min

4) Door infiltration

Qin2 = (Door opening/occup/hr × factor)/60

Qin2 = m3/min

5) Total infiltration (Qti) Qti= Qin1+ Qin2

Qti=

6) Outside air sensible heat load (OASH):-

OASH = 0.02043 (Qti) ( Tdbo - Tdbi ) kW

OASH = kW

7) Outside air latent heat load (OALH):-

OALH = 0.0491 (Qti) (wo- wR) kW

By using psychrometric chart

At room condition, wR = kg/kg of dry air

At outside condition, wO = kg/kg of dry air

OALH = kW

8) Heat load due to occupants:-

Sensible heat load = Nos of occupant × Sensible heat load per occupant

= kW

Latent heat load = Nos of occupant × Latent heat load per occupant

= kW

9) Sensible heat load due to lightning

= (Nos of fluorescent tube × wattage) + ( Nos of filament lamp × wattage)

= kW

Total sensible heat gain (Qs) =

10) Duct heat gain

= 5 % of sensible heat gain

11) Total heat gain by room = sensible heat gain + latent heat gain + duct heat gain

Qtotal = kW

12) By considering 10% of safety factor

Q’total = kW

13) Net heat gain by room = Qtotal + Q’total

14) Room sensible heat factor:-

Room total heat load (RTH) =

Room sensible heat load (RSH) =

Room latent heat load (RLH) =

RSHF =

15) Capacity of cooling system
