2. Would you expect the same weed species observed in lowland rice to be
present, if the area will be planted to corn? Explain why?
Yes, but only few of them. This is because some of the weed species are
only adapted to a certain area and a specific crop. For example, some of the
weed species that is lowland in nature can survive in upland but with further
consequences of being smaller than a weed raised on lowland because weeds
have distinguished habitat of lowland and upland areas. But some of them really
die if they do not live on their habitats that they are used to live.
Lowland rice and corn has the similar genus of weeds in terms of
abundance, the Echinochloa, but with different species, Echinochloa crusgalli for
the lowland rice area and Echinochloa colona for the corn area. They are similar
in terms of habitat because both species are used to live in lowland areas. But
the lowland rice has more lowland weed species hence, proving its name,
‘lowland rice’, while the corn has a plentiful species of dryland and upland weeds,
this is because the area is aerated and do not have much water as lowland has.
