What is Carboxytherapy?

 Carboxitherapy is a non-surgical treatment from cosmetic

medicine

Carboxytherapy uses injections to infuse gaseous Carbon Dioxide

under the skin into the subcutaneous tissue through a needle. It
eliminates fat cells, stimulates blood flow, improves skin elasticity and
significantly reduces cellulite,
How does Carboxytherapy work?
 The success of the procedure is owed to the fact that CO2 is
20 times more diffusible than oxygen (O2) and that
haemoglobin shows much more affinity to CO2 than to O2

 When CO2 is injected into subcutaneous tissue, the

blood flow is immediately stimulated in the treated
area. This causes the erythrocytes to release O2 and
collect CO2 so that the tissue receives major
oxygenation and allows the elimination of CO2 through
the lungs. This process is called the Bohr Effect.
How does Carboxytherapy work?

 The vasodilation (increase in blood flow) causes hyper oxygenation at a microcirculatory level, which
produces lipolysis (fat destruction) and reduction of fibroses. Additionally, the micro trauma provoked by
the needle and gas injection indirectly induces the stimulation and proliferation of connective tissue cells like
collagen and elastin, secondary to the inflammation caused in the treated area.
Co2 effects? - a) Vasodilation

 The most significant effects that follow the CO2 injection

are strong vasodilation, blood flow increase and a higher
concentration of O2 in the treated area.

 The local oxygen release is improved by the Bohr Effect.

The Bohr Effect describes the tendency of haemoglobin to
have less affinity with Oxygen when the CO2 concentration
in the blood is increased. This low affinity leads
haemoglobin to release oxygen to tissues and superficial
muscles in a homogenous manner. CO2 rapidly gets
converted to bicarbonates and H + acid in the presence of
the Carbonic Anhydrase Enzyme.
Co2 effects? a)Vasodilation

 This reaction causes the

PH tissues to become
acidic with even more
dissociation of O2 from
haemoglobin, allowing the
tissue to receive major
oxygenation
Co2 effects? a) Vasodilation
Co2 effects? b) Neo-angiogenesis
Eeffect
 Experiments in the 1930s to prove Carboxytherapy effect, consisted of
injecting CO2 into a frog’s leg, which showed strong vasodilation associated
with the creation of new capillaries
Co2 effects? c) Lipodisolution Improvement

…in the circulation, which leads to an increased blood flow and to a greater release of oxygen, which is
known as Oxidative Lipolytic Effect.
Co2 effects? c) Lipodisolution Improvement

 The pressure receivers of the Golgi apparatus

work in synergy with the pressure receptors of the
corpuscle of Pacini. When stimulated with
pressure, trauma or pain, they lead to a synthesis
or release of bradykinin, histamine, serotonin and
catecholamine. These mediators activate beta-
adrenergic receptors and cyclic AMP tissue,
leading to stimulation of lipase enzymes. These
reactions improve the lipolysis process in injected
areas.
How to inject?

 Begin by injecting the dermis, once done,

push the needle farther and deeper to inject
the subcutaneous layers. This is normally
the approach preferred by beauticians,
although injecting the subcutaneous layers
first also works.
How to inject? a) Injection Points

Injections points should be made in the area where cellulite resides. It is almost
always in the hips and thighs

The division of each area depends on the fat paniculus thickness, it should be a surface of approximately 7 to
10 cm side.
How to inject? b) Endpoint

 The subcutaneous injection will allow the gas to

diffuse and create a disc of 15-20 cm in diameter.
The skin will look granite and will show erythema,
move the needle 15-20 cm from the previous
injection site (not overlapping) to treat the entire
cellulite surface.

 After several sessions, typically five to six, the skin

becomes less resistant to gas diffusion. At such point one
or two injections may be sufficient to treat the entire
affected area

Treating cellulite is generally more painful than
CO2 applications in other parts of the body with
localized fat because it is mostly present in the
