Step 1

Know the Hazards

What are the hazards in the community?

Marikina City is prone to natural disasters such as heavy flooding and earthquakes. Man-made hazards such as fire may also be present in the
community.
What are the causes of these hazards?
Marikina River is found near the community so in the case of typhoons, the place gets flooded easily. The valley fault line also passes by Marikina
City so the place is highly at risk for earthquakes. As for fires, since the houses are situated near each other, fires could spread fast within the
community.
When are these most likely to occur?
As for floods, it would most likely to occur whenever there is a super typhoon or a strong typhoon with an orange to red rainfall warning from
PAGASA. As for earthquakes and fires, it can occur anytime unexpectedly.
Where do these hazards occur most likely? Will our house be affected by these?
As for floods, it would most likely occur on places near the Marikina River. Our house would be affected by this because it is just approximately
300 meters away from one part of the river. As for earthquakes, it would most likely occur in places where the fault line would pass through. Our
house would be affected by this because the valley fault line passes through Marikina City. As for fires, since the houses are situated near each
other, fires could spread fast within the community.
What are the possible impacts of these hazards on our household (economic, health, household structure etc.)? What can we learn from past
events about these potential impacts?
These hazards would possibly destroy the household structure in case of a heavy flood, a strong earthquake or a big fire. Consequently, economic
damages would be experienced especially if renovation of the house would be needed. Health problems would be experienced if ever there would
be a family member who would be physically hurt because of the earthquake or because of a fire. Our house has already experienced
What is our family’s typical weekly schedule? Where can each member of our household be found at certain times?
