1. COMPETITIVE CYCLIST TRAINING. During a week of training, Beth Andrews rode


her bike 80 miles on Monday, 75 miles on Tuesday, 135 miles on Wednesday, 40 miles
on Thursday, and 52 miles on Friday. What is the total number of miles she rode in the
five-day period?
2. COFFEE SALES. During a recent week, Starbucks Coffee sold 325 pounds of Estate
Java coffee, 75 pounds of Encanta Blend coffee, 137 pounds of Ethiopia Sidamo coffee,
495 pounds of Starbucks House-Blend Decaf coffee and 105 pounds of New Guinea
Peaberry coffee. Find the total number of pounds of these coffees sold.
3. CRUISE SHIP TRAVEL. A cruise ship has 1815 passengers. When in port at Grand
Cayman, 1348 passengers go ashore for the day while the others remain on the ship. How
many passengers remain on the ship?
4. ATM CASH. The amount of cash in an ATM ranges from $15,000 in small machines to
$250,000 in large bank machines. How much more money is there in the large machines
than in the small machines?
5. GREENHOUSE GASES. Estimates indicate that about 2.5 billion tons of the greenhouse
gas carbon dioxide are emitted each year in the United States by utility companies that
generate electricity. If scientists estimate that no more than 0.8 billion tons can be emitted
in the United States annually to keep global warming at bay, find the required reduction
in carbon dioxide emissions.
6. WORLD POPULATION GROWTH. The world population grows by 8900 people each
hour. Find the increase in world population in one year of 365 days.
7. AUTOMOBILE WEIGHT. A car weighs 2425 pounds. If its 582-pound engine is re-
moved and replaced with a 634-pound engine, how much will the car weigh after the
engine change?
8. PRESCHOOL MANAGER. Tiffany Connolly has $2324 in her preschool operating ac-
count. After spending $734 from this account, the class parents raise $568 in a rummage
sale. Find the balance in the account after depositing the money from the rummage sale.
9. BUSINESS ENTERPRISES. There are 24 million business enterprises in the United
States. Only 7000 of these businesses are large businesses having 500 or more employees,
while the rest are small and midsize businesses. Find the number of small and midsize
businesses.
10. WEIGHING FREIGHT. A truck weighs 9250 pounds when empty. After being loaded
with firewood, the truck weighs 21,375 pounds. What is the weight of the firewood?
11. WORLD WAR II VETERANS. World War II veterans, part of what is now called "the
greatest generation," are dying at the rate of 900 each day. How many World War II
veterans are projected to die in the next year of 365 days?
12. FINANCIAL CRISIS. To avoid bankruptcy during a recent financial crisis, a global bank
offered a $30,000 bonus to 12,600 employees if they would take an early retirement. If
all of the employees retire early, find the total cost to the bank.
13. HOTEL ROOM COSTS. In a recent study of hotel/casinos, the cost per night at Harrah's
Reno was $89, while the cost at Harrah's Lake Tahoe was $239 per night. Find the amount
saved on a 5-night stay at Harrah's Reno instead of staying at Harrah's Lake Tahoe.
14. LUXURY HOTELS. The most expensive hotel room in a recent study was the Ritz-
Carlton at $625 per night, while the least expensive was Motel 6 at $75 per night. Find
the amount saved on a 4-night stay at Motel 6 over the cost of staying at the Ritz-Carlton.
15. PHYSICALLY IMPAIRED. The Enabling Supply House purchases 6 wheelchairs at
$1256 each and 15 speech compression recorder-players at $895 each. Find the total cost
of the equipment.
16. OFFICE EQUIPMENT. Find the total cost if Krispy Kreme Doughnuts buys 27 com-
puters at $986 each and 12 printers at $179 each.
17. THEATER RENOVATION. A theater owner is remodeling and wants to provide enough
seating for 1250 people. The main floor has 30 rows of 25 seats in each row. If the balcony
has 25 rows, how many seats must be in each row of the balcony to satisfy the owner's
seating requirements?
18. PACKING AND SHIPPING. Nancy Hart makes 24 grapevine wreaths per week to sell
to gift shops. She works 30 weeks a year and packages 6 wreaths per box. If she ships
equal quantities to each of five shops, find the number of boxes each shop will receive.
19. MALL-SHOPPING FACTS. A recent study showed that the average trip to the mall lasts
4.4 hours, which is longer than a football game. How many hours would be needed for
eight of these trips to the mall?
20. VENDING MACHINE. The Selective End Cold-Drink vending machine is priced at
$2679.99 at Costco. Find the cost of 14 of these machines.
21. STOCKHOLDER LOSSES. Bagoda Imports announced a $38 million loss, or $0.58 a
share. Find the number of shares of stock in the company. Round to the nearest tenth of
a million.
22. SHARES OF STOCK. Money Store officials said that they expect to post a loss of $42
million, or $0.65 a share. Find the number of shares of stock in the company. Round to
the nearest million.
23. OLYMPIC GOLD COINS. If a 5-dollar Olympic gold coin weighs 8.359 grams, find the
number of coins that can be produced from 221 grams of gold. Round down to the nearest
whole number.
24. MEDICINE DOSAGE. Each dosage of a medication contains 1.62 units of a certain in-
gredient. Find the number of dosages that can be made from 57.13 units of the ingredient.
Round down to the nearest whole number.
25. U.S. PAPER MONEY The thickness of one piece of paper money is 0.0043 inch.

31. CABINET INSTALLATION. When installing cabinets, Kate Morgan must be certain
that the proper type and size of mounting screw is used. Find the total length of the screw.

32. HIGHWAY DRIVING. On a recent vacation to Canada, Hernando Ramirez drove for
5½ hours on the first day, 6¼ hours on the second day, 3¾ hours on the third day, and

33. WHOLESALE PRODUCE SALES. Last month, Lim's Wholesale Vegetable Market
sold 334 tons of broccoli, 2g tons of spinach, 72 tons of corn, and 1 5tons of turnips. Find
the total number of tons of these vegetables sold by the firm last month.
34. DELIVERING CONCRETE. Chuck Stone has 88 cubic yards of concrete in a truck. If
he unloads 4 cubic yards at the first stop, 3 cubic yards at the second stop, and 174 cubic
yards at the third stop, how much concrete remains in the truck?
35. TAILORED CLOTHING. Mary Levenson bought 15 yards of Italian silk fabric. He
made two tops with 4 yards of the material, a suit for his wife with 46 yards, and a jacket
with 3 8 yards. Find the number of yards of material remaining.
36. MEASURING BRASS TRIM. To complete a custom accessory order for a customer,
Ruth Berry of Home Depot must find the number of inches of brass trim needed to go
around the four sides of the lamp base plate shown below. Find the length of brass trim

65. AUTOMOBILE A one-year-old automobile is marked "on sale" for $18,450, which is of
its original price. Find the original price.
66. INTERNATIONAL SHIPMENTS. Because of handling and freight charges, Western
Oil Equipment charges of the list price for an item shipped to Indonesia. Find the list
price of an item that was charged at $725.
67. HOME CONSTRUCTION. A contractor built 105 homes last year, some economy mod-
els and some deluxe models. The number of economy models was the number of deluxe
models. Find the number of each type of home that was built.
68. RADIO STATION SALARIES. Radio station KLRS spent $21,000 on salaries one
month. The amount spent on announcers was the amount spent on all other employees.
Find the amount spent on announcers and on all other employees.
69. BUSY INTERSECTION. An engineer is studying a busy intersection. In 1 hour, the
number of cars going north-south was of those going east-west, and the total number of
cars was 1400. Find the number of cars going north-south and east-west.
70. COMMERCIAL BUILDING. Jane Anderson purchased a run-down, empty commercial
building and plans to fix it up. The building can be used for both retail stores and office
space. She thinks she can get a total annual rent of $135,000 with 3z times as much rent
coming from retail stores as from office space. Find the rent she expects from office
space and also the rent she expects from retail stores.
71. MATERIAL. Karen Cherie has a piece of fabric that is 106 inches long. She wishes to
cut it into two pieces so that one piece is 12 inches longer than the other. What should be
the length of each piece?
72. HARLEY DAVIDSON. Excluding managers, there are 22 full-time employees working
at a large Harley Davidson shop. New employees receive $9.50 per hour, while more
experienced workers average $12.90 per hour. The company spends $273.60 per hour in
wages, not counting benefits. Find the number of each type of nonmanagement worker.
73. VEGETABLE SALES. Jumbo Market makes $0.10 on a head of lettuce and $0.08 on a
bunch of carrots. Last week, a total of 12,900 heads of lettuce and bunches of carrots
were sold, with a total profit of $1174. How many heads of lettuce and how many
bunches of carrots were sold?
74. NISSAN SALES. Profits on Nissan Altimas and Sentras average $1200 and $850, re-
spectively, at one dealership. The total profit in a month in which they sold 120 of these
models was $130,350. Find the number of each sold.
75. AUTO REPAIR One month, revenue from the 95 repairs at an auto repair shop totaled
$20,040. The average charges for repairs on personal and commercial vehicles were $250
and $180, respectively. Find the number of each type of vehicle repaired.

noticed a down-hole pressure of 3220 pounds per square inch at 6700 feet below the
surface. Estimate the pressure at the 9850-foot total depth of the well to the nearest pound
per square inch. Assume that the ratio of pressure to depth does not change with different
depths.
90. Last year, a shelter purchased 5760 pounds of beef to feed its 120 inhabitants. Find the
total amount of beef needed next year if the manager anticipates 138 inhabitants.
91. John proofreads 7 pages in 12 minutes. How many pages does he proofread in 3 hours?
92. A company makes pension contributions of $89,391 per quarter for its 83 employees. It

95. DRIVING TESTS. In analyzing the success of driver’s license applicants, the state finds
that 58.3% of those examined received a passing mark. If the records show that 8370
new driver’s licenses are issued, what was the number of applicants? Round to the nearest
whole number.
96. WAL-MART PROFITS. After paying income taxes, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. earned $3.5
billion in profit one year. Estimate total revenue to the nearest tenth of a billion if profit
was 3.36% of total revenue.
97. COMMUNICATIONS INDUSTRY LAYOFFS. Telecommunication equipment maker
Nortel Networks says it will lay off 4000 workers globally. If this amounts to 4% of its
total workforce, how many workers will remain after the layoff?
98. GAMBLING PAYBACK. An Atlantic City casino advertises that it gives a 97.4%
payback on slot machines, and the balance is retained by the casino. If the amount
retained by the casino is $4823, find the total amount played on the slot machines.
99. SMOKERS AND CANCER. The National Cancer Institute estimates that 87% of all
deaths due to lung cancers are caused by smoking. Assume that 1.1 million people who
developed lung cancer from smoking died from the cancer. Find the number who died of
lung cancer from all causes. Round to the nearest tenth of a million.

Solve for base or part as indicated in the following application problems.


100. SHAMPO INGREDIENTS. Most shampoos contain 75% to 90% water. If there are 12.5
ounces of water in a bottle of shampoo that contains 78% water, what is the size of the
bottle of shampoo? Round to the nearest whole number.
101. HOUSEHOLD LUBRICANT. The lubricant WD-40 is used in 82.3 million U.S. homes,
which is 79% of all homes. Find the total number of homes in the United States. Round
to the nearest tenth of a million.
102. PROPERTY INSURANCE. A dental office is valued at $423,750 and is insured for
68% of its value. Find the amount of insurance coverage.
103. FLU SHOTS. In a survey of 3860 people who were 18-49 years of age, 16.3% had
received an influenza vaccination (flu shot). How many of those surveyed received the
vaccination? Round to the nearest whole number.
104. CAMAROS AND MUSTANGS. The Chevy Camaro was introduced in 1967. Sales that
year were 220,917, which was 46.2% of the number of Ford Mustangs sold in the same
year. Find the number of Mustangs sold in 1967. Round to the nearest whole number.
