As per Table 2 Cl. 8.1.2.2. of IS 7784 (part 1):1993
Max permissile velocity in the barrel is for face of concrete grade below M30 = 6 m/sec

As per the note 1 of under table 2 of cl. 8.1.2.2 of I.S. 7784 (part 1) : 1993
the permissible value is further redused by 25% i.e. V= 4.5 m/sec

M.F.L. at section 5 - 5 i.e., D/S side of the drop = 539.241 m

Crest level of the drop = 539.798 m

Discharge over the drop under drowned weir condition:

Soil pressure acting at the top of side wall Kaγh1 = 0.33 x 2.15 x 21
2
= 14.9 Kn/m

Height of external side wall = 1.275 + 0.3 + 0.3

= 1.875
Height of barrel + Height of soil above barrel h2 = 2.15 + 1.875
= 4.025 m
Soil pressure acting at the bottom of side wall = 0.33 x 4.025 x 21
2
Kaγh2 = 27.893 Kn/m

Upward base pressure acting on the barrel:

Load acting on the top of barrel per meter run

A External load acting on the top of barrel (i.e., due to soil or head wall which ever is max.)

2
Max.external load acting on the top of barrel (soil or head wall) = 53.76 Kn/m

Total top width of barrel on which above load acts = 2.1 x 2 + 0.3x2 + 0.3x1
= 5.1 m

Max. external load acting on barrel per meter run = 53.76 x 5.1
= 274.176 Kn/m
B Self weight of box = top slab = 5.1 x 0.3
2

Bottom slab = 5.1 x 0.3
2

External side wall = 1.275 x 0.3 x 2
2
= 0.765 m
Internal side wall = 1.275 x 0.3 x 1
2
= 0.3825 m
Total self weight of barrel alone = (1.53 + 1.53 + 0.765 + 0.3825) x 25

C Load due to wearing coat inside barrel = (0.075 x 2.1 x 24) x 2

= 7.56 Kn/m
D Load due to water inside the barrel = 2 x 2.1 x 0 x 10
= 0 Kn/m

There fore total load acting at the base of the barrel

= 274.176 + 105.1875 + 7.56 + 0
= 386.924 Kn/m

Base pressure acting = 386.924 / 5.1

= 75.867 Kn/m

Net upward pressure acting on the bottom slab of barrel

= 75.867 - 0.3x25 - 0.075x24
2
= 66.567 Kn/m

Safe bearing capacity of soil considered = 250 KN

Since the Safe bearing capacity (S.B.C.) of soil is more than the net upward pressure acting
on bottom slab of barrel, the design is SAFE

Vehicular load:

per IRC - 6
Impact factor for Class A loading = 4.5 /(6+ L)
(As per cl. 211.20 of IRC 6:2000)
L = Effective span for single vent = 2.4 m
Impact factor = 4.5 / (6 + 2.4) = 0.536

As per fig 5 of IRC 6:2000, In any case if span is less than 3.0 m, 50% of
impact shall be considered.
In this case Since the span is less than 3, 50% of impact is considered in the design

As per Cl no. 211.6 of IRC 6:2000, When filling above the barrel is more than 0.60m, The
impact percentage to be aloowed in the design shall be assumed to be one half of what is
specified in clausec 211.2 & 211.3
In this design the earth filling above barrel is = 2.15
Hence impact % is = 1 + (0.5 / 2) = 1.25
There fore tha max wheel load including impact is = 1.25 x 228
= 285 KN
