UPPER PENNAR PROJECT-JEEDIPALLI RESERVOIR
NOTE ON DESIGN FEATURES - UNDER TUNNEL AT KM 44.875
INTRODUCTION:
HNSS PROJECT (PHASE-II) is major project covering district of Ananthapuramu for Providing Irrigation
Facility. Lifting of water form Jeedipalli Reservoir to feed Upper Pennar Project and formation of,
Proposed Samaravandla Palli & Puttakanuma Reservoirs to feed an ayacut of 25,000 acres in
Ananthapuramu District.
The Main Canal from Jeedipalli Reservoir to Feed Pennar Project, Revised hydraulic Particulars from
i.e., km 0.000 to km 53.452 are approved by Chief Engineer (Projects), Water Resources Department,
Ananthapuramu on Letter dated 27-02-2019.
The MAIN CANAL OF JEEDIPALLI RESERVOIR on its way is crossing the existing Stream at Km. 44.875
Bed level of the stream is +539.579m as against the CBL of +538.573m and FSL of +540.223m and
hence an Under Tunnel is proposed.
The M.F.D. is worked out to 15.259 Cumecs by using Dicken’s formula. The MFL computed with the cross
sections at c/s 0.00m at centre.
HYDRAULIC CALCULATIONS AND FIXING OF VENT WAY: The bed level of the leading channel at U/S
end of transition is +539.798m. The canal bed level is + 538.573m and the barrel floor level is fixed at
+536.973m and it is negotiated with One vertical drop height 2.825m proposed at up - stream side of box.
The floor of the barrel is kept horizontal at +536.973m. To pass the M.F.D of 15.259cumecs. Two vents of
size 2.10m x 1.20m (Barrel) proposed. The section of tail channel proposed as 11.300 m x 1.500m with side
slopes of 1.5: 1.
FOUNDATIONS: 450 mm thick C.C. in M-15 grade with 40mm M.S.A is proposed for foundations of wings
and returns. The foundation level of the wings and returns are taken up to +536.419 on U/S and +535.924m
on D/S. The stresses worked in concrete and on soils are shown in the stress table.
ABUTMENTS, WINGS AND RETURNS: Wings and returns are designed in accordance with T.V.A.
procedure treating the earth fills on wall as stepped back. The angle of internal friction of soil is taken as 28°
and the angle of friction between earth and wall face is taken as 14°. The unit weight of saturated earth and
cement concrete is taken as 2.1 t/m3 and 2.4 t/m3 respectively. The top width of the wing walls on U/S & D/S
(max. section) are proposed as 0.50 m with vertical face on water side and sloped face on earth side. The
base width of the wing walls on U/S is proposed as 2.900m (maximum section) and designed for retaining
earth pressure of back fill. The base width of the wing walls on D/S is proposed as 2.200m and designed for
retaining earth pressure of back fill. The wing and returns are proposed in CC M-15 grade with 40mm MS.A.
The stresses developed in concrete and on soils are shown in the stress table.

feasibility and all the design calculations and the drawings are enclosed herewith for your kind perusal and
needful approval.

Design of vent way
Discharge = 15.259 Cumecs
Proposed width of vent way = 2.1 x 1.2 m
No of vents = 2 Nos
Size of haunches = 0.15 x 0.15
Thickness of wearing coat in barrel = 0.075
2
Area of haunches for one vent = 0.028 m
Net area of vent way = (2.1 x 1.2 - 0.028) x 2
2
= 4.984 m
Velocity in the vent = 15.259 / 4.984
= 3.062 m/sec
As per Table 2 Cl. 8.1.2.2. of IS 7784 (part 1):1993
Max permissile velocity in the barrel is for face of concrete grade below M30 = 6 m/sec
As per the note 1 of under table 2 of cl. 8.1.2.2 of I.S. 7784 (part 1) : 1993
the permissible value is further redused by 25% i.e. V= 4.5 m/sec
HENCE SAFE
Since the velocity in the Barrel is less than the permisble velocity it is O.K.
Hence we are adopting the barrel section of 2 vent of size 2.1 x 1.2 m
