Description of the Project

1. Rationale

Bagasse also called megass. The word bagasse from the French bagage via the Spanish bagazo,

originally meant "rubbish","refuse" or "trash". The furniture industry is characterized by

combination of several production processes that involve different raw materials but most of the

furniture was made from wood. By this process they can produce bagasse. Bagasse is a solid

waste product associated through woods. Previously bagasse was burned as means of solid

waste disposal. However as the cost of fuel oil, natural gas and electricity have increased, the

definition of bagasse has changed from refuse to energy.

But what exactly is biomass energy and exactly how does this benefits the Philippines? Biomass

energy is produced by burning organic materials like bagasse in order to produce energy.

Biomasses are organic materials that derived from any recently-living structure. Plenty of

biomasses produced in nationwide. This study is indeed to provide an environment solution for

uncontrolled disposal of biomass bagasse by way of recycling the biomass bagasse and replacing

into energy. In other hand, burning of wood bagasse for electricity generation produces between

10% to 35% more carbon emissions per unit of power than coal.
Objectives

2.1 General Objective

The general objective of this study is to develop the increase in energy demand and

environmental concerns is calling for a shift to the use of renewable energy sources.

2.2 Specific Objectives:

2.2.1. To optimise the use of bagasse for electricity generation and export to the grid.

Over the 5 years period to expand electricity generation using bagasse from 70 GWh and 120

GWh, that is a 22 MW bagasse.

2.2.2. To investigate into uses of other fractions of the wood biomass (leaves and dry

trash) for electricity generation which would further add to amount of electricity export to the

grid with the amount reduced dependance of fossil fuel.

2. Methodology

Bagasse the waste from wood processing, is one of the biomass residue used as fuel. It can thus

be useful renewable resource for energy which also promises to avoid the environmental

emission of power generation from fossil fuels. Nevertheless,it should be confirmed that the

power production from bagasse is friendly for the environment.

3. Research Project Duration

This project is estimated to be conducted within the maximum allowable time duration of

eight (8) months or one (1) semester.

4. Approximate Budget

The approximated budget needed to complete the study is PHP 10,000.00.
