SENIOR PROJECT SELF-EVALUATION

Directions: Utilize this worksheet to help evaluate yourself and your project. Be as complete
and descriptive as possible. This self-evaluation should give the scoring team and your teacher a
clear picture of what you accomplished in your project.

Name - Jessica Rinehart Project Start Date – January 30, 2019

Title of Project - Showing Strength in the Face of Adversity Art Show

Project Completion Date - March 31, 2019

1. In 40 words or more describe who your project benefited and how. In other words, what was the
impact of your project? Be specific.

My project benefited the LGBTQ+ community, local high school students, and helped Equality Virginia
by raising awareness of the struggles that the LGBTQ+ community go through. The art show allowed
local high school students to share their take on “showing strength in the face of adversity” and gave them
the opportunity to show off their work to the public.

2. In at least 40 words explain how the project challenged you. How was this a stretch for you? Be
honest. If it was not really a stretch for you, explain why you chose not to take the opportunity to
challenge yourself.

I have never organized an art show before and for the first week and half after sending out the submission
flyer, I was very nervous that I was not going to obtain any art work for my project. My project
completely relied on other people choosing to help me advocate about the LGBTQ+ community’s rights.

3. List and then describe 5-8 fundamental ideas/concepts/skills of your project, which you
learned/enhanced during your project. If you cannot think of 5-8, just list and describe what you
can.

● organizing an event
○ I learned how that hosting an art show takes time and that I should have given more time
for submissions as well as reached out to more schools.
● managing donations
○ I obtained $35 in donations and contacted Equality Virginia to find out how to forward
them the donations.
● collecting and managing art
○ I learned how to communicate with artists or art teachers to spread the word about my
project and collect art, as well as return the art after the show. I then worked to get the
work framed and matted so that they could be properly displayed at the show.
● displaying art
○ I learned how to best display art for people to walk around.
● communicating with local businesses
○ Enhanced my communication skills over emails with organizations and local businesses
about posting my flyer, obtaining a venue, and spreading the word about my project and
its purpose.

4. List and describe 4-8 problems/obstacles/issues you encountered in your project, and briefly
describe how you solved each. If you cannot think of 4-8, just list and describe what you can. If
you did not solve the problem, then tell why.

● art coming in at the last minute

○ I was stressing that I was not going to have many art pieces, but i received a lot the last
week and a half leading up the event.
● rain forecasted on the day of the event, found out on the saturday before
○ I ran around the night before trying to find people I could borrow an event tent from. i
showed up on March 31st and they had the umbrella’s open for me since it was
forecasted to rain.
● contact with Mrs. Cahr, who runs the drag brunch
○ She was not one to respond to my emails so I was a little scared that I would show up and
she would have forgotten that she said I could use the outdoor patio for my project.
Luckily she remembered!

5. List all people who helped you on the project and briefly describe the help given.

6. How does your completed project compare to the picture you had in mind when you started the
project? Explain the reason behind any changes from your proposal.

My completed project was better than the picture I had in mind. I had more art than I expected to receive,
but I also envisioned it on a sunny day and not a rainy day.

7. If given the opportunity, explain what you would have done differently now that you speak from
experience?
I would have opened up the submission time in February instead of March so that I could have received
more art from students. I also would have made a rain date to be safe.

8. Beyond the project itself, what did you learn about yourself? What did you get out of the
experience in terms of personal growth?

I learned that I am someone who would advocate for any group that is being wronged. To me there is no
reason to turn away someone because of their race, gender, religion, sexuality, or sexual orientation. My
project has opened the door for me to be a local advocate for Equality Virginia and has supported the LSA
by gaining access to the Chrysler Museum for any future art show projects.

9. Reflecting on the total amount of time and effort that you put into this opportunity, and reflecting
on the overall quality of the final product, what grade would you give yourself on the project? Be
honest with yourself! Justify the evaluation of your grade in at least 25 words.
Grade: B+

Justification: I feel as though I did a great job organizing the art show, but I could have started asking
for submissions earlier. I also should have been prepared for any type of weather scenario instead of
scrambling last minute to find an event tent to shield the art from rain.
