Instructions
This exam consists of four parts. Each part can be taken at separate times. There should be
no external aids, such as calculators or books, during any part of this exam.
1. The first part consists of 50 multiple choice problems located on the course website.
Each problem is worth 1 point. There is no partial credit for these problems.
2. The second part consists of 10 true/false problems located on the course website.
Each problems is worth 1 point. There is no partial credit for these problems.
3. The third part consists of 5 short answer problems. These are each worth 2 points.
Partial credit is possible for the short answer section.
4. The last part consists of 6 proofs. Each proof is worth 5 points. Please write the
proofs in two column format. Partial credit is possible for the proofs. At the very least,

PART III Short Answers: Please answer the following as neatly and thoroughly as possible. Write down all of
your work. Each is worth 2 points.

1. Given

• O
←→
• Tangent P B with B the intersection point.
←→
• Secant P C with intersection points at A and C where A is between P and C
• m∠P = 30◦
_
• m BC = 130◦
_
Find mAB.

2. Given a regular hexagon with radius r, what are its apothem, perimeter, and area?

3. A and B are endpoints of a diameter. If C is chosen at random from the points on the circle, (excluding A and
B), what is the probability that
(a) 4ABC is a right triangle?
(b) m∠CAB ≤ 60◦ ?

4. Find the line perpendicular to y = 5x + 1 such that the intersection of the two lines is at (0, 1).

5. Draw a figure demonstrating that it is possible to have a quadrilateral that is not a parallelogram such that
the diagonals are congruent and perpendicular. What kind of figure is it if it is a parallelogram?

PART IV Proofs: Please prove the following statements. Each is worth 5 points. You may use any format you
wish, but each step must be clear and supported by a reason consisting of a postulate, theorem, definition, or a
given piece of information. As some of these theorems to be proven are theorems from the book, you are not allowed
to cite that particular theorem as its own proof. Coordinate proofs are perfectly acceptable and, in some cases,
recommended.

6. The sum of the measures of the angles of a triangle is 180◦ .

7. Triangle Angle-Bisector Theorem: If a ray bisects an angle of a triangle, then it divides the opposite side into
segments proportional to the other two sides of the triangle.

8. If the diagonals of a quadrilateral bisect each other, then the quadrilateral is a parallelogram.

9. The midpoint of the hypotenuse of a right triangle is equidistant from the three vertices.

10. The Pythagorean Theorem: If a, b, and c are sides of a right triangle, prove that a2 + b2 = c2 . Do not use a
coordinate proof since the distance formula is based on this theorem.

11. Ptolemy’s Theorem: If a quadrilateral is inscribed in a circle, the sum of the products of its opposite sides is
equal to the product of its diagonals.
