A 14-year-old high school
student in
the Philippines fell to her
death after losing her
balance while taking a
selfie with a friend near a
staircase landing of their
school in suburban Pasig.
According to doctors, she
sustained a sharp blow to
the head from the fall and
broke a rib which pierced a
kidney.

While these dreaded selfie-

takers may think their little
activity is harmless fun,
little do they know they are
actually harming
themselves in many ways
with each and every selfie
they snap. More serious
psychological disorders to
selfie-taking individuals
include Obsessive
Compulsive Disorder
and Body Dysmorphic
Disorder (a chronic mental
health condition in which
the sufferer obsesses over
perceived flaws with their
body)

Expert psychologists are
sharing their studies with
the public and the results
are concerning. Narcissism,
OCD, superficial
obsessions, unrealistic
expectations, entitlement,
insecurity and other
underlying traits can be
magnified through selfies
and can lead to destructive
behaviors. Clinical
psychologist Bart
Rossi said,
Today too many people are
interested in making a
statement about themselves
on the internet and creating
an influential existence.
Selfies, when used to
excess show a lack of depth
and a shallow personality. If
someone is obsessed with
taking selfies it is most
likely because the
individual is self-absorbed
and narcissistic.

What should be

The incidence of accidents,

deaths, or occurrence of
destructive behavior due to
selfie must be reduced and
people must be aware of the
inherent hazards associated
with people risking their
lives simply for the sake of
recognition on a virtual
forum.

Discrepancy

Lack of awareness that a

simple selfie can lead to
serious problems ranging
from psychological
disorders to even death.
The occurrence of accidents
and deaths worldwide is a
strong proof that the danger
of taking a selfie must be
known, thus this study will
be conducted.

Possible reasons for the

discrepancy

With the rise in the amount

and type of content being
posted on social media,
various trends have
emerged and milleneals
want to keep abreast with
the newest and popular
updates. In the process of
keeping up with these
trends, milleneals are trying
to post unique pictures of
themselves even on
dangerous places just to
satisfy their need to be
recognized online.

People think that their little

activity is harmless and fun,
little do they know they are
actually harming
themselves in some ways.
