c. Abstraction

Technical definition is a very detailed description of a term,

process or phenomenon.

Example:
Global Warming - an abnormality of climate.
Mother – a female parent
Love – the feeling that is coming from heart.

An operational definition is the specific meaning of a word or

phrase given to it by the group of people who use the word in
their specific context.

Example:

Global Warming - the extreme hotness, extreme coldness, and

the fast changing and shifting of the climate.

Mother – a protector, a disciplinarian and a friend.

Love – caring, supporting and guiding others.

Types of Technical Definitions

Parenthetical Definitions – used to define a simpler term with
a short description enclosed in parenthesis immediately after the
term.

Example: The viscosity (thickness) of the syrup made it difficult

to pour.

Sentence Definitions – used to define more complex terms in

couple of sentences

Formula: term + class + feature/details

Example: Fuel (term) is a substance (class) that is burned to

produce energy (feature).

Expanded Definition – used to define terms with a very detailed

explanation using examples and visuals.

Example:

Sportsmanship- The good attitude/behavior displayed by players

of a game; fairness, determination, winning or losing gracefully.

Make sure that the technical definition has the following

 Synonym (if available)

 Formal definition
 Examples
 Operational definition
 Analogies
 Contrast with what it is not

d. Application

definition and other one sentence using operational
definition.
 Each word must have two sentences; one for technical
definition and one for operational definition.
