SKITTLES PROJECT PART 4

TOTAL CLASS SKITTLES: 5087

RED: 1046

ORANGE:1066

YELLOW:977

GREEN:1029

PURPLE:969

Summary statistics:

Column Sum

Problem 1: Suppose all of the Skittles in the class data set are combined into one large

bowl and you are going to randomly select one Skittle.

• (a) What is the probability that you select a green Skittle? (4 points)

• (b) What is the probability that you select a Skittle that is NOT green? (4 points)

• (c) What is the probability that you select a Skittle that is red OR yellow? (4

points)

• (d) What is the probability that you select a Skittle that is orange GIVEN that it is

a secondary color (secondary colors are green, orange and purple)?

a) the probability I selected a green skittle is: 1029/5087

Probability: 0.2023 or 20.23%

b) the probability I selected a skittle that is not green is: 1-0.2023= 0.7977

79.77%

c) the probability that I selected a skittle that is red OR (+) yellow is: 1046+977/5087

2023/5087

probability: 0.3977 or 39.77%

d) the probability that I selected a skittle that is orange given that is a secondary color

is: 1029+1066+969=3064 1066/3064=0.3479 probability

Problem 2: Suppose you are going to randomly select two Skittles from the bag YOU

purchased.

• (a) What is the probability that both Skittles are purple if you select them with

replacement?

• (b) What is the probability that both Skittles are purple if you select them without

replacement?
• (c) What is the probability that the first skittle is purple and the second skittle is

not purple if you select them with replacement?

• (d) What is the probability that at least one Skittle is purple if you select them

with replacement?

My bag of skittles:

total candy: 62

height: 65

red:16

orange:14

yellow:12

green:12

purple:8

a) probability both skittles are purple: 8/62 . 8/62= 0.1290 . 0.1290=0.0166 with

replacement

b) probability without replacement: 8/62 . 7/61= 0.1290 . 0.1148= 0.0148 without

replacement

c) probability first skittle is purple and second not purple with

replacement: first: 0.1290 . second: 1-0.1290= 0.1290 . 0.871= 0.1124

d) probability one skittle is purple with replacement: 1-(54/62)(54/62)=1-(0.8710)

(0.8710)=1-0.7586=0.2414
Problem 3: Suppose all of the Skittles in the class data set are combined into one large

bowl and you are going to randomly select ten Skittles with replacement and count

how many are yellow.

• (a) List the requirements of the binomial probability distribution and show that

this meets them, including identifying the values for n and p.

• (b) What is the probability that exactly 4 of the 10 Skittles are yellow?

• (c) What is the probability that at most 2 of the 10 Skittles are yellow?

• (d) For samples of size 10, what is the expected value and standard deviation for

the number of yellow skittles that will be included?

a) selected skittles:10 with replacement

p 977(yellow)/5087(total)=0.1921

meet requirements: two possible outcomes, yellow or not yellow.

b) probability that exactly 4 of the 10 Skittles are yellow: binompdf

(10,977/5087,4)=0.7948

c) probability that at most 2 of the 10 Skittles are yellow:(10,977/5078,2)=0.3014

d)expected value and standard deviation for yellow: p . 10= 0.1921 . 10= 1.921 mean

S.D=1.1523
