Part I – Reading and Writing – 45 points

Read the text below and complete the following tasks.

The Titanic left Southampton to joyful applause on April 11th 1912, stopped in Cherbourg to pick up more
passengers and headed for New York. The passengers settled down to life on board, eating, drinking,
dancing, and generally enjoying all the good things which the ship had to offer. As the ship approached the
waters of the North Atlantic, messages were received, warning of icebergs, and lookouts were alerted but no
one thought that the ship was in any serious danger. At 11:40 on April 14 th, a lookout, nearing the end of a
two-hour watch, spotted an iceberg immediately ahead and reported it to the ship’s bridge. For a short time it
looked as if there was going to be a head-on collision but at the last moment the ship swung to port. The
iceberg appeared to brush along the ship’s side. On the bridge and in the lookout tower it seemed as if there
had been a close miss. No one was yet aware of the danger they were in. Some groups of passengers even
went on to the deck to see the tons of ice which had showered on to the ship as the iceberg scraped by.
