Introduction to the Fitnah of Music

Very many years before the first Haraam instrument, item or thing which Shaitaan
brought into this world to involve Insaan into sin, was the sin of music and musical
instruments. Musical instruments were invented and made and formulated by
Iblees. They were introduced into the world to Insaan by Iblees. This was not too
long after Adam Alaihissalaam. It was the era of the children of Adam
Alaihissalaam. From then Iblees has been using this tool and weapon to destroy
Insaan, to destroy the Imaan of Insaan and to bring Insaan into Satanism. How
common music has become today in the Ummat? Even worse and more serious is,
a major part of the Ummat is not ready to accept that music is Haraam. A major
part of the Ummat will argue with you that music is not Haraam! This is even more
serious, not to believe something which is Haraam. One, is that you know
something is wrong, something is Haraam but you are doing it due to weakness.
Your Nafs is weak so you are doing it. There is hope and scope for Tawbah that
this person is going to make Tawbah.

A person for example is involved in Zinaa which is a major sin. But no one will
consider Zinaa to be Halal (permissible) if he is a Muslim. He has got Imaan in his
heart, he is doing Zinaa, at the back of his mind he knows, “what I am doing is not
permissible, it is Haraam.” Very easily the person will make Tawbah and will
reach Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala. But with this sin of music, such a cloud of
deception has been put over this sin that many of our brothers and sisters, not only

4
will they listen to music, but they will listen with this in mind that, “what we are
doing is absolutely permissible, it is not a sin.”

The Hukm as far as Shariat is concerned to make something Halaal which is

Haraam and vice versa; A sin like music, to consider it and believe it to be Halaal,
Shariat says you have gone out of the fold of Islam. Because when something is
Haraam, it means that it is compulsory for you to believe that it is Haraam. If you
do not believe that it is Haraam, you will not be a Muslim anymore! How many of
our brothers and sister, come up to you, and tell you, “what is the Daleel (proof)? I
do not believe that music is Haraam!”

About twelve to thirteen years ago, someone was talking about music and the
discussion was happening in which I was also present. That person said, “no, no,
no! Not all music is Haraam! Only that junk music is Haraam. The rap, rock, pop
and all of that metal and hard-core music is wrong. But soft music with proper
instruments is a very good thing.”

Naudhubillah min Dhaalik!

He said, “soft music gives a lot of comfort and solace. There is nothing wrong in
that!”

This is what the Ummat has in their minds. It is so serious!

What do they say?

5
They say, "show us in the Qur'an! Show us in the Hadith where it has been
mentioned that music is Haraam! Where is the proof?”

When our Nafs is not agreeing, then we say, "where is the proof!" We are ready to
challenge whatever is mentioned to us because we have this notion that, a person is
not going to be able to even provide proof. We are so confident of ourselves that,
nowhere in the Qur'an and Hadith it has even been mentioned that music is
Haraam. Thik hai, even if there in nothing about music in the Qur'an, assuming
there is nothing, Ahadith are not enough to prove something is Haraam? The Qaul
of Nabi e Kareem Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam are plus or minus approximately a
total of about forty Hadith. Forty Hadith explicitly mentioning that music is
Haraam. Forty Hadith are not enough? Forty Hadith telling us in various ways and
forms that music is Haraam, and that is not enough for us? But the fact is that even
in the Qur’an there are four Aayaat which have been revealed regarding music.

Explanation of the Ayats and Ahadiths Regarding Music

 Ayats From the Quran e Kareem

First Ayat

We have four Aayaat and forty Hadith all pointing towards music being Haraam.
Let us just go through the four Aayaat how Allah has mentioned with regards to
music. Then we will discuss a few Hadith. We will also discuss the spiritual,
psychological, mental, emotional and physical harms of music. In every way it is
harmful. When Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala stops us from something, when Allah
gives us a command, “do not listen to music!” whichever command of Allah, it is

6
all for our benefit. Unfortunately, our mind is so deficient that we do not
understand that. Our Ta’alluq with Allah is so weak, our Yaqeen on Allah is so
weak that we want to challenge every Hukm of Allah! Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala
knows us better than we know ourselves, Allah knows us because Allah has
created us. Allah is keeping us alive, so Allah knows what is good for us and what
is not good for us!

Allah loves us more than anyone in this Dunya can. No matter who it is! That
which is mentioned, the love of Allah is seventy times more than the love of the
mother, is the Hadith. In Arabic 7, 70, 700 etc. is used to show infinity. So, do not
think that, how much the mother loves us, multiply it by seventy and you will get
the love of Allah. No! It means infinitely, Allah loves you more than your own
mother loves you! Now when we understand that, is Allah going to stop us from
something good? No! That which is evil, that which is wrong, that which is
harmful for us, Allah is going to stop us from. He will only stop us from that which
is harmful. Music is harmful! Look at the medical research, look at the
psychological research and you will see what harms music causes. Inshallah we
will discuss this a bit later on.

But first the Aayaat of the Qur'an e Kareem. The first Ayat which we want to
mention which is the most famously quoted Ayat with regards to music. This is in
the beginning of Surah Luqmaan, the Ayat I recited before you in the beginning.

Allah says that:

Wa minan naasi may yashtriy lahwal hadeeth liyudhilla ann sabeelillah.

7
there are some people:

‫ْ◌يَ ْشتَ ِرى‬

Yashtariy

They buy.

What do they buy?

Lahwal hadeethi

They buy futile talk.

They buy nonsensical talk. They buy Haraam amusement and play.

Why?

Liyudhilla ann sabeelillah

So that they can deviate you from the path of Allah.

They can take you away and lead you astray from the path of Allah Subhanahu Wa
Ta'ala,

8
bighayri ilmin

Without having any Ilm

And what more?

Wa yattakhidhaha huzuwaa

So that they can make a mockery out of Deen, and they can make a mockery out
of the path of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala!

For such people what is the promise, and what is the end result?

Ulaaika lahum adhaabun muheen

Allah says:

For them is a very disgraced punishment.

A very disgraceful punishment filled with Zillat, that is their end result!

Similarly, there are Ahadith of Nabi e Kareem Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam where
Nabi e Kareem Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam himself mentions the Tafseer of this

9
Ayat. What does this Ayat mean that this person or these people who purchase and
buy?

Lahwal hadeeth?

Sahaba Radhiallahu Anhum in general all of them and Nabi e Kareem Sallallahu
Alaihi Wasallam in quite a few narrations himself has mentioned:

‫ِ◌لَ ْه َو ْال َح ِديْث‬

Lahwal hadeeth

In this Ayat refers to music!

It is actually revealed regarding a certain man of the Quraish, who had bought a
singing girl. In those days there used to be singing girls! They would buy a slave
girl, who would be expert in singing. She would sing together with playing the
musical instruments. Today we also do the same thing. We buy a CD, that is a
singing girl, or we download the song directly onto our phone, or onto our device,
whatever it is! It is the same thing!

The whole Maqsad was to stop people from listening to the Qur'an e Kareem. Nabi
e Kareem Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam used to recite the Qur'an e Kareem, and the
effect it had on the people, made them become Muslim. They used to bring Imaan
just by listening to the Qur'an. To prevent people from going to him and listening
to Qur'an, he started this whole thing and he would invite people that, instead of
going there, come here and listen to this music to take people away from there.

10
َ ‫ ِ◌لَ ْه َو ْال‬lahwal hadeeth, means singing and music.
The Tafseer of this Ayat, ‫

This is the first Ayat which points to the fact that music and singing is Haraam.

Second Ayat

This is an Ayat of Surah Furqaan, the same section which we started today in Fajr,
one of the qualities of the Awliyaa, the people who have Imaan e Kaamil. Allah
Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala mentions regarding them:

‫الز ْو َر َو ِاذَا َم ﱡر ْوا بِاللﱠ ْغ ِو َم ﱡر ْوا ِك َرا ًما‬

‫َو الﱠذِينَ َﻻ يَ ْش َهد ُْونَ ﱡ‬
Wal ladheena laa yash'hadhunaz zura wa idha marru bil laghwi marru kiraama.

The Awliyaa of Allah are those people who do not present themselves in places
where there is ‫( زور‬zur).

The actual meaning of ‫( زور‬zur) is something which is Baatil (falsehood). That is

why lies are called ‫( قول الزور‬qauluz zur). The statement of ‫( زور‬zur) here Allah is
saying that they are not present in places of ‫( زور‬zur).

َ ِ
Wa idha marru bil laghwi,

11
Whenever they pass by something which is ‫( لغو‬laghw), this is with a ‫( غ‬ghain) not
a ‫( ه‬haa). Not ‫( لهو‬lahw) but ‫( لغو‬laghw). ‫( لغو‬Laghw) is similar to ‫( لهو‬lahw), but it
is just that ‫( لهو‬lahw) will mean futile play and amusement and ‫( لغو‬laghw) will
mean that futility which is Baatil, it is totally Haraam, falsehood.

When they pass by something like that:

‫َم ﱡر ْوا ِك َرا ًما‬

marru kiraama

They pass by with a lot of honour and dignity.

Meaning that they do not participate, they just pass by with their Izzat. They keep
their Izzat and they pass by.

So, the Mufassireen say, what does ‫( زور‬zur) mean here?

The Sahaba Radhiallahu Anhum say ‫( زور‬zur) here refers to music.

Who is making Tafseer of this Ayat? Not any Mufassir, the Sahaba Radhiallahu
Anhum, in front of whom the Qur'an was revealed, are making Tafseer of this Ayat
that ‫( زور‬zur) here refers to music. That the Awliyaa of Allah do not go to places
where there is music because music is Haraam.

12
Third Ayat

The third Ayat is found in Suratun Najm, right at the end. This is the Sajdah Ayat.
Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala says:

Afa min hadhal hadheethi ta'jaboon wa tadh'hakuna wa laa tabkun wa anntum
saamidun.

Afa min hadhal hadeethi ta'jaboon,

Are you surprised with regards to this speech, Ya'anike the Qur'an e Kareem?

Is this something surprising for you? Because they would express their surprise
that now what is this? Then they would label Nabi e Kareem Sallallahu Alaihi
Wasallam with many different kinds of labels and they would accuse him of this
being Sihr, magic or poetry!

ْ َ‫◌و ت‬
َ َ
Wa tadh'hakuna wa laa tabkun!

When you listen to the Qur'an, what should you do?

You should cry! But instead of crying, you are laughing!

13
ْ َ‫َ◌و ت‬
َ
Wa tadh'hakuna wa laa tabkun

You laugh but you do not cry!

Ya'anike you make a mockery out of the Qur'an.

How do you make a mockery out of the Qur'an?

َ َ
Wa antum saamidun

The Sahaba Radhiallahu Anhum and the Mufassireen have mentioned, ‫
َ ◌َ
(saamidun) refers to music and singing! They would make a mockery out of the
Qur'an by singing and be involved in their music, when the Qur'an would be
recited.

Wa antum saamidun

In one of the Arab dialects, ‫

َ ◌َ (saamidun) refers to music and singing.

Fourth Ayat

14
The fourth Ayat, which is, I would say the most important Ayat because that is
where Allah mentions and outlines the weapons of Iblees. This is the Ayat of Surah
Bani-Israeel, where Allah mentions briefly the story of Iblees. When Allah gave
the command to make Sajdah, Iblees refused. Iblees then asked Allah Subhanahu
Wa Ta'ala to work on Insaan to deviate them, etc. Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala
from his own side is giving Shaitaan, Iblees these weapons that, "O Iblees, these
are your weapons. Whatever you want, use these and try to take my servants away.
But those people, who have Ta’alluq with Me, you will not be able to do anything
with them!" These weapons Allah Himself gave to Iblees to use. Why did He give?
For a test! So that we will have to make the Mujaahadah of saving ourselves from
those weapons.

What are these weapons?

Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala mentions a list. Allah is addressing Iblees and telling
him:

Wastafziz manistataata minhum bisautik.

First weapon:

Lead astray, whoever you can from Insaan!

With what?

15
Bi sautik

With your voice!

The voice of Iblees!

Anyone has heard the voice of Iblees?

How he sounds like when he talks?
We have all heard the voice of Iblees!

But let us discuss what is coming after then we will come to this because this is our
main discussion.

Let us just go through the other weapons.

Allah says:

Wastafziz manistataata minhum bis sautika, wa ajlib alayhim bikhaylika wa
rajilika.

And attack them with your horses and with your men.

The Mufassireen mention, that this refers to the armies.

16
‫( َ◌ ِب َخ ْي ِلك‬Bi khaylika) refers to the technology or warfare and ‫َ◌ر ِج ِلك‬
َ (rajilika) refers
to the manpower in the armies. Allah is giving the armies to who? To Iblees.

That is why today you will see the most advanced armies are the armies of Iblees.
Whether it is America, UK or China, they are the most advanced of armies with the
most advanced weaponry. Allah gave it to them! Allah is mentioning in this Ayat;
we have given it! All along they have always had the most advanced of weaponry.
It is like how it happened in Badr. They have always had the most advanced of
weaponry and the most men in their army, because Allah gave it to them as a test
and also to prove to the Ummat to have their Yaqeen in Allah. It is not the Asbaab
which are going to get you through. Prepare, but do not put your Yaqeen in
Asbaab.

Allah gave them everything also just to spite them more. To say that, “we gave you
all the armies and all the technology, you were still defeated, and you lost."
Because at the end it is defeat for them! Guaranteed defeat!

Next weapon which is more serious for us:

‫◌و شَا ِك ْر ُه ْم فِي ْاﻻَ ْم َوا ِل َو ْاﻻَ ْو َﻻد‬

َ ِ
Wa shaarikhum fil amwaali wal awlaadi.

And become a partner with them in their Maal and became a partner with them
in their children!

O Iblees, you can make a partnership with them in two things:

17
1. In their money you can become a partner
2. And in their children also you can become a partner

These are two weapons which Iblees has been given:

1. Partnership of wealth
2. Partnership of children

Partnership of wealth refers to Haraam wealth. When a person has got Haraam
wealth, when he is earning Haraam wealth, it is as if Shaitaan has become a partner
in his wealth. He tempts people with money and earn Haraam wealth, and because
of that intoxication, they will not care about Halaal and Haraam. They will work in
a bank for example and earn a very high salary or work in an insurance company.
They are going to work somewhere which is Haraam, and earn Haraam money,
thus Shaitaan is being a partner. He has destroyed them spiritually using that
Haraam weapon.

Similarly, partnership in children is when the parents do not make the Tarbiyat of
the children according to Islamic Shariat. Because it is the parents who are
responsible for the upbringing of their children. When they do not make the
upbringing of the children and they leave the upbringing of the children to the one-
eyed box that is sitting in the room. How many parents do that? They leave the
children with the TV because they are too busy in their lives, they are too busy in
the Dunya! The mother is working, the father is also working! Where are the
children? The children are at home with the TV. The TV is raising them. Shaitaan

18
has become a partner in their children! Or maybe the non-Muslim maid is raising
them up! Or maybe the phone is raising them up!

They are messing up with regards to the Tarbiyat of their children. They
themselves maybe outwardly pious, but because they are not taking care of the
Tarbiyat of their children, their children are falling into the hands of Iblees.
Shaitaan is becoming a partner with them. That is one explanation!

The final weapon, Allah says:

َ ْ
Wa id hum

And promise them.

"O Iblees give them promises!"

But what kind of promises?

False promises

Allah Himself says after that, “but remember, I have given you the option of
making promises to you.” But, remember what kind of promises those are:

ُ ‫ان ِإ ﱠﻻ‬
‫غ ُر ْو ًرا‬ ُ ‫ط‬َ ‫َو َما يَ ِعدُ ُه ُم ال ﱠش ْي‬
Wa maa yaidhuhumush shaitaanu illa ghurura.

19
“Shaitaan will not promise anyone, except that it is going to be a promise of
deception!”

It is going to be deception, do not fall for it!

He is going to promise you many Ajeeb things, many different things, all false
promises! “I will do this for you! I will do that for you!” This is what is going to
happen, just like he promised Adam Alayhis Salaam. Did he not promise him? If
you are going to eat from this tree, then you will live forever! This was a false
promise, a deception. In the same way, Satan gives us false promises in this Dunya
that, “do Haraam and you will live a good life. Do Haraam and you will be
successful. Do Haraam and you will be wealthy.”

All false promises.

Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala says:

Was tafziz manis tata’ta minhum bisautika

What is the voice of Satan?

The Mufassireen and the Sahaba Radhiallahu Anhum have all said the first
reference for the voice of Satan is music. Music is the voice of Satan. It is Sautu
Shaitan. Sautu Iblees. It is the voice of Iblees himself. Similarly, you can take
under that every voice and every sound which calls towards Baatil is also the voice

20
of Iblees. The Ulamaa have included in Assautu Shaitan, besides music, the Radio
and the Television. All of this is called Assautu Shaitaan. How it matches up with
the Hadith.

Nabi e Kareem Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said regarding the voice of Dajjal:

It is going to be such that when he is going to make an announcement in one

part of the world then the whole world will hear.

There were some Ulamaa who tried to interpret this in the literal manner that,
Dajjal will have a such a voice that he will actually physically speak and the whole
world will be able to hear. But then there are other Ulamaa who said, “no, that this
does not mean literal. It is referring to music, radio, television, newspapers, all
types of media and propaganda which are being spread.” Is it not happening? He
makes announcement in one part of the world and you will get it in another part of
the world. Today it has become even easier. Before it used to be just radio and
television. Today we have phones. Today we have social media. So easy that
something happens in one part of the world, and it spreads all over the world. That
is Assautu Shaitan. That is the voice of Iblees and voice of Shaitan.

Now just think about it!

When you listen to music, you are in reality listening directly to the voice of Iblees.
What is he doing? He is putting a spell on you. The voice of Iblees is to put a spell
on you and to intoxicate you. If the voice of Iblees is going inside your mind and
inside your heart, then what is the result? You are going to do those things which
Iblees and Shaitan want you to do. Basically, from this Ayat we get to know that if

21
you listen to music then you will become puppet in the hands of Iblees. Whatever
he wants to make you do, you will do. That is music and this is what you will see
in the Ahadith as well. This ties in directly to psychological, mental and physical
harms of music.

Let us go to the Hadith, then Inshaallah we will get back to this discussion.

 Ahadith Regarding Music

The punishments which have been mentioned. As I said, there are forty Hadith in
which the Hurmat of music has been mentioned about music being Haraam. Let us
just go through a few.

First Hadith

Nabi e Kareem Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said:

That there is going to come a time upon this Ummat, or they are going to come
people in this Ummat, Yanike towards the ending of times, who are going to
make Halaal four things:

1. Zinaa, is going to become Halaal.

2. Intoxicants, alcohol, drugs are going to become Halaal. (People are going to
make it Halaal.)

22
3. Silk for men. They are going to make it Halaal. (Men are going to wear silk
without even thinking that this something which we are not supposed to wear.
For men silk is Haraam.)
4. Music and singing. Musical instruments.

Nabi e Kareem Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said that, “people will make it Halal.”
To make it Halal first it has to be Haraam. You cannot make something which is
already Halal. Something which is Haraam you make it Halaal. Similarly, he is
grouping music with Zina, silk, alcohol and intoxicants which are all without a
doubt Haraam. Together with that is music. This Hadith telling us Music is Haraam
and we are seeing this era today where people have made all of these four sins
permissible.

As I explained to you with regards to music, people have made it permissible and
Jaiz and they hear it very happily. They say, there is something now called music
therapy. If you have gone through an emotional trauma or something like that, they
give you music therapy, to heal your mental and emotional wounds using music.

Are you going to heal the wounds or are you going to create more wounds?

Look at the deception of Iblees. You are trying to heal wounds, but you are
creating more wounds, deeper wounds. You are destroying that person through
music therapy. Many people are involved in this. This is what Nabi e Kareem
Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said.

One thing which you will notice in the Ahadith, wherever music is mentioned most
of the time it is also grouped with two sins; intoxicants and Zina. The reason for it

23
is music works exactly the same way as drugs and alcohol work. Music intoxicates
the mind thus, changes and alters the state of your mind. This is medically proven.
The psychologists and the researchers have said it themselves. Check it up and you
will see what they are saying. They listen to music but they themselves are making
research and posting it. When you listen to music, it affects and alters the mural
pathways inside your brain. It changes the way you think, deal with people,
changes your actions and thoughts. It forms new pathways every time you listen to
music. It makes your brain into an Ibleesi brain; the brain which Iblees wants.

Then what thoughts come out of that brain?

What action come out?
What words come out?

Those which Shaitan wants. It all leads to that.

Therefore, music is actually an intoxicant. This is why it is always grouped with

intoxicants. Literally intoxicants and music both lead to Zina. These three things
are always grouped together if you see in the Ahadith. Nabi e Kareem Sallallahu
Alaihi Wasallam is giving us a message. That is why Hadhrat Fudhail Bin Ayadh
Rahimahullah Ta’ala, one of the great Auliya of the previous times says:

ّ ِ ُ‫أَ ْل ِغنَا ُء ُر ْقيَة‬

‫الزنَا‬
Al ghina ruqyatuz zina

Ruqya we translate into english as a spell. Music is the spell of Zina. Yaanike,
when you listen to music it is like a spell being put on you, which will then force

24
you and drive you towards the sin of Zina. And not only towards the sin of Zina
but towards every other sin as well:

 taking drugs
 killing
 violence,
 murder
 stealing

All the Shaitani actions Iblees wants you to do come from music. He is going to
make you do it through music.

Second Hadith

Nabi e Kareem Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said:

A time will come when again alcohol, intoxicants will become common.

He said:

Musical instruments and singing girls will become common. When that happens
then Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala is going to bring upon this Ummat
earthquakes. The people who will be involved in these sins will be transformed
into monkeys and pigs physically, what is called Maskh. The third thing is stones
will come raining down from the sky and destroy the people. These three
punishments are for intoxicants and music.

25
This particular Hadith has come in many different versions where Nabi e Kareem
Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said in another Hadith. The following punishments are
going to come upon the Ummat:

 Earthquakes,
 People being transformed into apes, pigs
 Stones raining down from the sky

The Sahaba Radhiallahu Anhum would ask:

Ya Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam, when is that going to happen?

He would tell them:

These punishments are going to come down upon the Ummat when music and
singing girls become common.

A total of thirteen different Sahaba Radhiallahu Anhum have narrated Hadith of a

similar meaning which I just mentioned.

There is another Hadith, in which Nabi e Kareem Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said:

A time will come in the Ummat where people from my Ummat, will be
transformed into monkeys, pigs and apes.

26
Yaanike, the physical body will change into monkeys and pigs which has happened
before in the previous Ummats. therefore, it can happen in this Ummat as well.

Then the Sahaba were very worried and asked:

Ya Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam, what kind of people are they going to
be?

Allahu Akbar! Nabi e Kareem Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam replied:

They will be Muslims who will be reciting the Kalima and they will be people
who will be fasting in the month of Ramadhan.

The Sahaba Radhiallahu Anhum started to panic, because they could not think and
understand how can Muslims doing all this become afflicted with such a
punishment? How is it possible? Because again they would judge everyone
according to themselves. They are the ones reciting the Kalima and fasting in the
month of Ramadhan. How is possible that they be punished in this way?

They asked:

Ya Rasullallah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam, what will they be doing?

What will necessitate this punishment?

What will bring down this punishment onto them?’’

Nabi e Kareem Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said:

27
They will be involved in intoxicants and they will be involved in music.

He said to this extent that:

One night they will sleep listening to music and involved in intoxicants and in
the morning, they will wake up as pigs and monkeys.

This is the Hadith of Nabi e Kareem Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam.

Just think about it!

Third Hadith

The narration of Hadhrat Abu Hurairah Radhiallahu Ta’ala Anhu. Nabi e Kareem
Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said that:

To sit in a place where there is music, is already Maasiya, a major sin. If you are
at the same time listening to that music then this is Fisq, open rebellion against
Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala.

Then he said:

If further than that you are sitting listening and you are even deriving pleasure
from that, then that is Kufr.

28
Deriving pleasure from the music is what? It is Kufr.

This is what music is!

Fourth Hadith

Nabi e Kareem Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam explaining the whole incident of Iblees,
etc.

When Iblees was thrown out, he asked Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala to give him a
caller:

Give me something which I can use to call people towards me and towards
worshipping me.

Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala told him:

Your caller will be musical instruments.

In other words, Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala gave him the musical instruments to
use it to call people and to attract people towards the worship of Iblees. From this
Hadith we get to know, music leads to Satan worshipping. Music leads to the
worship of Iblees himself directly, open Satanism. This is like a magnet. When you
listen to music a magnetic pull exercises on you and brings you closer and closer to
the actual Ibaadat and worship of Iblees, Satan worship. Think about the

29
seriousness of that! You will end up losing your Iman. You listen to music you can
end up losing your Iman in the process.

That is how serious it is!

Fifth Hadith

Nabi e Kareem Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said and he gives an example. Let us
understand that example to see the seriousness of it!

Al ghinau yunbitun nifaqa fil qalb kama yunbitul maa’uz zara’a

Music will cause hypocrisy, Nifaaq, grow in your heart in the same way that
water makes crops grow in the field.

You have a physical farm and you want crops to grow what are you going to do?
You are going to put water there. After you put the water the crops grow. The
water is going to make the crops grow. He said in the same way, you are going to
put the water of music into the field of your heart. He is comparing the heart to be
a field and in reality, this is the case. Your heart is like a fertile field. What you
plant in it, is what is going to grow. If you are going to put in the water of music
into the field of your heart, weeds of hypocrisy, Nifaaq are going to grow. A
person will become a Munafiq.

What is a Munafiq?

30
Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala says regarding the Munaafiqin:

Innal munafiqeena fiddarki asfali minnannaar

In Jahannum there are going to be different stages of the Christians, the Jews, the
Mushrikin, etc. The last stage you can say the bottom most stage is for those
people who are the Munaafiqin (hypocrites). They will be in the worst punishment
in Jahannum. Worse than everybody else, are the hypocrites.

Nabi e Kareem Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam is telling us that music is going to

create hypocrisy in your heart. You listen to music, it is like you are pouring water
of music into your heart, making the weeds of hypocrisy grow.

Sixth Hadith

In another narration this Hadith continues:

‫ب َك َما يُ ْن ِبتُ ْال َما ُء ﱠ‬

‫الز َرع‬ ِ ‫اﻹ ْي َمانَ فِى ْالقَ ْل‬
ِ ْ ُ‫َ◌ َو ْالقُ ْرآ ُن َو ال ِذّ ْك ُر يُ ْن ِبت‬

Wal quraanu wadh’dhikru yunbitul imaana fil qalbi kama yunbitul maa’uz zara’a.

What is the opposite of music?

The Tilaawat of the Quran e Kareem and the Dhikr of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala.

31
He said:
If you are going to put these two into the field of your heart what is going to
come up? The beautiful orchards and gardens of Iman.

Which one should we opt for? The choice is ours.

Do we want a heart full of the weeds of hypocrisy?
Or do we want a heart of a lush beautiful green garden of Iman?
Which one should a Muslim choose?

From this Hadith we get to know that Quran e Kareem and music are two
opposites. They cannot go together ever. They cannot come together. Even if a
person is involved with the Quran e Kareem, Tilaawat of the Quran e Kareem, and
he is listening to music, he is making those weeds of hypocrisy grow in his heart.
What happens in a garden where you let the weeds grow?
Those beautiful trees in the garden from which you were getting fruits, eventually
die because the weeds take over. They destroy your garden until there are no trees
left, only weeds.

Unfortunately, we are living in such an era of degeneration where even children in

Madrasas also listen to music. On one hand, they are learning the Ilm of Deen, they
are memorizing the Quran e Kareem, on the other hand they listen to music. These
two things can never come together. What will eventually happen? A person will
lose the Quran e Kareem. For example, a Haafidh of the Quran e Kareem has got
the entire Quran e Kareem in his heart. But if that person is going to listen to
music, he will end up losing his Quran e Kareem. Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala will
deprive him from the Ne’mat of Quran e Kareem. Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala will

32
take it away as if it was never there. Such things have happened. Do not think it is
just a theoretical thing I am saying.

A Haafidh of the Quran e Kareem is such a great Ne’mat, a person is being granted
the entire Quran e Kareem in his heart. But that person makes Nashukri of that
Ne’mat by listening to music for example, his heart is a garden but now he is
putting weeds. Eventually his garden is going to die. Meaning what? Allah
Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala will remove the Ne’mat of Quran e Kareem. And as I said
these things have happened. That due to sins which we may think to be trivial but
Huffaadh have lost their Quran e Kareem.

One Haafidh in South Africa was very good. He knew his Quran e Kareem in and
out. Once he saw something which was Haraam for him to see. He did not lower
his gaze. I do not know if he saw a woman or if he watched a movie or he saw
something on the phone. Whatever it was, but he saw something which he was not
supposed to see, and he saw it once. Immediately after that the Quran e Kareem
was removed from his heart. He forgot the entire Quran e Kareem. To such an
extent he could not even recite Surah Ikhlaas, Qul huwwallaahu ahad. Allah
removed it totally. His mind became blank. The Ne’mat can be snatched from a
person. We have to be extremely careful in staying away from such sins. Look at
how the Sahaba used to make Ehtimam of staying away from such things.

Hadhrat Imam Nafi’ Rahmatullahi Alaihi Ta’ala who was a very great Tabi’een
was the student and Mureed of Hadhrat Abdullah bin Umar Radhiallahu Anhu.
Once they were walking together, Sheikh and Mureed suddenly the sound of flutes
came to their ears. Immediately Hadhrat Abdullah bin Umar Radhiallahu Anhu
pushed both his index fingers into his ears. He plugged his ears and moved away

33
from the main road so that the music sound could get lesser. As they would be
walking, he would constantly be asking Imam Nafi’ Rahmatullahi Alaih if the
sound was still there while his ears were plugged? Imam Nafi’ would tell him,
“yes, it is there.” Finally, Imam Nafi’ Rahmatullahi Alaih said, “now the sound of
flutes is gone.” That is when Hadhrat Abdullah bin Umar Radhiallahu Anhu
removed the fingers from his ears and came back onto the main road. He told
Hadhrat Nafi’ Rahmatullahi Alaih, “the way you have seen me doing, I was also
once walking with Nabi e Kareem Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam, my Sheikh and
Ustadh suddenly we heard the sounds of flutes. Immediately Nabi e Kareem
Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam moved away from the road and plugged his Mubarak
ears with his Mubarak fingers. He kept asking me, “O Abdullah is the sound still
there?” Until finally when the sound died down, is when he removed his Mubarak
fingers from his Mubarak ears.”

This was the Ehtimam of the Sahaba Radhiallahu Anhum who learnt from Nabi e
Kareem Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam. This is how much they would be fearful,
“hypocrisy should not enter us.”

We have to make a lot of effort in this regard.

The Punishment of Listening to Music in Aakhirat

Hadhrat Anas Radhiallahu Anhu said:

34
Nabi e Kareem Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said, “the person who listened to
music every time in this Dunya, on the Day of Qiyamat, lead is going to be
melted with the fire of Jahannam and poured into his ears.

For every time a person heard music, his ears are going to be filled with boiling
molten lead. This is the punishment of music on the Day of Qiyamat. The narration
indicates towards this punishment taking place even before he enters the fire of
Jahannam.

May Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala save us.

The Rewards for Abstaining from Music

What about when we do not listen to music, what will Allah give us? The Ne’mat
of not listening to music will be given even before entering Jannat. Hadith says,
Nabi e Kareem Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said:

On the Day of Qiyamat before entering Jannat, Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala is

going to make an announcement to the Angels. “O Angels bring to Me all those
people who saved their ears from music in this Dunya.” They will all be
gathered. They will made to sit up on mounds of pure musk and Amber. Allah
Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala will then command the Angels, “O Angels, now recite My
Tasbeeh, My Tamjeed and My Takbeer to these people.” The Angels are going to
recite in such a beautiful voice which people have never heard before. They are
going to be making Zikr for those who saved their ears from the sin of music, as
a Ne’mat of Istiqbal (welcome).

35
There is one Hadith in which Nabi e Kareem Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said:

Those people who listen to music in this world will be deprived of listening to the
Roohaniyun in Jannat.

The Sahabas Radhiallahu Anhum asked:

Who are the Roohaniyun?

Nabi e Kareem Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said:

The Qaris of Jannat.

The Roohaniyun are special for the Qiraat of the Quraan e Kareem.

Those who listened to music will be deprived meaning those who do not listen to
music will be granted this Ne’mat.

More than this, some narrations state:

When a person will come to Jannat, firstly Hadhrat Dawood Alaihissalaam will
be told to recite the Quraan e Kareem for the Jannatis.

From all the Ambiya Alaihimussalaam, before Nabi e Kareem Sallallahu Alaihi
Wasallam, the sweetest voice is of Hadhrat Dawood Alaihissalaam. His voice was
so sweet, mesmerizing and entrancing that in the Quraan it has been described,
when he would make Tilawat of the Zaboor, the birds which would be flying

36
around would stop and hang in mid-air to listen to his Qiraat and the mountains
would sway from one side to the other.

People will get so amazed at the voice and the Tilawat.

After that Allah will say:

You have heard this; you want to hear more? Then He will call Nabi e Kareem
Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam and say, “Ya Rasulullah, recite Surah Yasin (in
some Riwayat).”

Nabi e Kareem Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam will recite. The voice of Nabi e
Kareem Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam is beyond compare. Nabi e Kareem Sallallahu
Alaihi Wasallam will recite for the Jannatis.

After that Allah Subhanahu says:

You want more, now I will recite.

Then Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala will recite Surah Rahman. All Jannatis will hear,
what enjoyment, Lazzat a person is going to get!

Those people who listened to music will be deprived of this Ne’mat.

Is it a wise thing to listen to music?

Just think of it!

37
What Allah has prepared for us in Jannat. Something which we can never imagine.

In a Hadith, what a person will be granted if he stays away from music. Allah has
prepared for the Jannatis, the Hoorul Ain.

Who are the Hoorul Ain?

Each and every Mu’min who is going to enter Jannat will get a minimum of
seventy-two Hoorul Ain. That is the starting figure. Hoor is the plural of Hawra.
Ain is the plural of Ainaa. Hawra is a woman who has got big eyes and they are
naturally lined with kohl, Surma, Kaajal. They have extremely beautiful eyes. They
have an extremely stark contrast between the iris and pupil of their eyes. Ainaa
means big eyes. They are called Huurol Ain because their most outstanding feature
will be their eyes. Unimaginable beauty!

Just a glimpse of their beauty. Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala said in the Quraan e
Kareem in one place:

They are going to be like protected pearls. White shining beautiful pearls which
have not been exposed at all.

In another Ayat Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala says:

They are going to be Baydum Maqnoon, the hidden protected egg.

38
It is referring to the skin, its texture and colour. When you break open the egg,
there is a thin soft membrane on the inside of the shell. It is very white, a beautiful
colour and very soft. The Ulamaa say that this is the comparison to the skin of the
Hoors. It is going to be reddish white and very soft. Their skin is going to be pure
without any blemishes or stains, pure and smooth.

In Surah Rahman, Allah says:

They are going to be rubies and corals from the outside. Their skin is going to be
very white. The hair and eyes are going to be very black. The contrast of the
white skin and black hair is going to make them extremely beautiful,
unimaginably beautiful.

In the Ahadith with regards to the Hoor:

Each Hoor is going to wear seventy pairs of clothing, one on top of another. The
clothing is going to be such that through the clothing you will be able to see their
skin and at the same time, you will be able to appreciate the beauty of each of
those seventy pairs of clothing. Not only will you see the skin through the
clothing, but the skin will be so transparent and beautiful like a mirror that you
will be able to see through the skin the bone marrow in her calf.

In another Riwayat it comes:

You will be able to see her reflection in her cheek. The cheek is going to be like a
mirror.

39
In another Riwayat:

The men of Jannat will be able to see the heart of the Hoors and how much love
the Hoor has in that heart for that person.

Another Riwayat:

The skin is going to be such that the person will be able to see through and see
the liver also.

This is all going to be very beautiful. Do not start thinking “in this Dunya that if
we see someone’s liver, it is not a good sight.” Do not compare with this Dunya!
We are talking about Jannat where it is going to be beauty when you will be able to
see through her.

Nabi e Kareem Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said:

If the Hoor were to glimpse from Jannat and reveal her face to look down upon
the world, her face has got so much Noor that the space between the earth and
sky would become filled with Noor such that the sun will become pale. The sun
will lose its light in front of the light of her face. Just by doing that the sky and
earth will become filled with her fragrance. Her scarf is going to be better than
the whole Dunya and whatever it contains. If she were to spit one drop of saliva
into the seven oceans all their water would all turn sweeter than honey. Her
saliva is able to change the saltiness of all the seven oceans into sweetness. If she
were to talk to the dead, her voice is such that the dead will become alive to hear
her voice.

40
This is just a brief description from the Kitaab, Maidens of Jannat. It has got
detailed description of how the Hoor is going to be. Do not read in the Musjid.
What I am trying to say, when you go into Jannat and granted those Hoors, they
will start to sing. You are going to listen to their voice for years and years of each
song. This is the music of Jannat. The song they are going to sing has also been
narrated in the Hadith.

Nahnul baaqiyatu afala namutu abada wa nahnu raadiyatu fala naskhatu abada
wa nahnu naaimatu

They are going to tell their husbands, “O Husband, now you are going to live
forever, you will never die. Now we are always going to be happy with you.”

Dunya ki bivi kabhi razi kabhi naraz, chalta rehta hai, uppar niche.
Yeh zindagi hakikat hai

Forever and ever we are always going to stay happy, never will we become sad
or angry.
We will always stay in luxury and enjoyment.

41
Never will we be removed from here.

There are other verses as well which have been narrated in the Ahadith. This is
what they are going to sing for those people who saved themselves from music in
this world.

You tell me, what do we want to choose?

Which choice are we going to make?
Are we going to listen to the music of this world which is absolute filth?

The voice of Shaytan which is going to bring all the qualities of Iblees into our
lives and actions. We are sacrificing Jannat, the beautiful Ne’mats just for the sake
of the enjoyment of a few minutes, fake, deceptive enjoyment. We have been
deceived and yet we are falling for it.

The Psychological Effect of Music

Music changes the neural pathways in your brain. In other words, it will rewire
your brains, so to say. This is the Maqsad of music being invented in the first
place. It is for Shaytan to get access into your brain and to rewire it according to
the way he wants so that only that thought is going to come which he wants.

Only those words are going to come which he wants.

Only that action is going to be done which he wants.

A person will become a total puppet and slave through the strings in the hands of
Iblees. Do we want to become like this? Or do we want to remain slaves of Allah

42
who can then be blessed by Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala with all these Ne’mats?
The Sukoon, Itminaan and sweetness in this Dunya we will get. Believe me, with
music there is only Becheni, restlessness. It is like an Azaab on the heart. Who
enjoys weeds? When there are thorny weeds in the heart, how can you enjoy and
find comfort and rest? It is not possible.

Conclusion

If any of us sitting in this gathering or listening to the livestream or recording of

this Bayaan have been involved in this sin previously or we are involved in it
presently, let us all make Niyyat:

We make Taubah, “Ya Allah because we will not be able to bear the molten lead
which is going to be poured into the ears. We will not be able to bear it. Ya Allah,
we are making Taubah today, from today until my Maut, I will not listen to
music. I will throw away all my CDs, delete all my songs. I am going to get rid of
this sin totally. I am going to purify myself.”

May Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala grant all of us the Tawfeeq and the ability to be
able to do this.

On another note, those women who will make the effort of Deen, build their
Imaan, Allah will grant them Jannat. I described to you the beauty of the Hoors but
your wife in this world who Inshaallah Allah will make her your wife in Jannat as
well. The narration says, “the queen of all the Hoors is Laaiba is the most beautiful
of all the Hoors.” Seventy thousand times more beautiful than her is the Mu’minah
who is going to enter Jannat. But for this, effort is required. The women must also

43
make the effort and save themselves from all of these sins also so that Allah can
grant them Jannat, Inshaallah.
