In early May, multiple women came forward on social media, accusing
BROCKHAMPTON’s Ameer Vann of sexual misconduct. In response, Vann
posted a statement

read. “We were lied to, and we’re sorry for not speaking up sooner.” Now, two
women have shared statements with Pitchfork detailing their allegations that
Vann physically and emotionally abused them.
Vann did not respond to repeated requests for comment on this story.
Spokespeople for Brockhampton declined to comment. RCA Records,
Brockhampton’s label, also did not respond to requests for comment.
None of these women went to police or other authorities, and Vann has not
been charged with any crimes relating to the allegations.
Shawna Berry, a 24-year-old Texas woman who has not before come forward
publicly, told Pitchfork that she and Vann engaged in a brief sexual
relationship that lasted a few nights in January 2015. She said she consented to
intercourse, but not to the physical abuse that she claims accompanied it.
Berry told Pitchfork that Vann bit and choked her, leaving painful bruises and
even causing her to briefly lose consciousness on one occasion.
Whenever Berry protested any of Vann’s alleged actions, she said, he would
“punish” her by restraining her arms and legs and aggressively spanking her.
“If I told him I didn’t like something, it only made him want to do it more,”
Berry wrote in an email. “I had no idea what was to be expected, and once it
started I had no way to end it.” She said she initially viewed Vann’s behavior as
a form of BDSM, but ended their sexual relationship when she realized that
“my body could not handle what Ameer was putting me through.”
Asked why she went back after the first night, Berry told Pitchfork it was
because she was “in a manic episode” where she would seek out “reckless” or
“dangerous” activities, and that she also hadn’t yet fully understood the
gravity of what allegedly took place.
Berry’s roommate in early 2015, Kayla, who asked to be called by only her first
name, said Berry told her at the time about the alleged abuse described above.
“Shawna had been more knowledgeable about sex than I was, and she told me
that this was BDSM, and that master-and-slave style was his kink,” Kayla wrote
in an email. “I was unsure because it sounded wrong, but it was her sex life,
not mine… Nobody sits you down as a teenager and tells you how a BDSM type
of sexual relationship is supposed to be.” (Kayla was 19 at the time, Berry was
20, and Vann was 18.)
Titus Gilner, a former BROCKHAMPTON member, told Pitchfork that Kayla,
whom he was dating at the time in question, told him about Berry’s claims of
Vann’s physical abuse soon after it allegedly occurred. He declined to
comment further but pointed toward his tweets, made when the allegations

relationship in 2015, also detailed accusations of physical abuse to Pitchfork.
Rowan said Vann choked her until her vision turned black, bit her, and held
her down during sex, leaving dark bruises all over her body. “I just thought we
had this experimental type of sex life, and I convinced myself it was ‘cool’ even
though it hurt,” she wrote in an email. “The sex itself was consensual, but not
what he’d do, and saying stop was not an option.”
Berry said Rowan came to stay with Vann five months after her relationship
with Vann ended. “I knew she was in trouble, I knew what was happening,”
Berry said. Kayla, Berry’s roommate, said she was also aware that Vann was
“treating [Rhett] poorly.” Both apologized for not doing anything about this at
the time.
An old friend of Rowan’s, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said she
called Rowan in 2015 after seeing a photo of her on Instagram with apparent
bruises and marks around her neck. The friend said Rowan told her these were
bruises and bite marks from her partner named Ameer. “When I continued to
ask her if it truly was consensual, she sort of skirted the question and wouldn’t
directly say yes,” the friend told Pitchfork in an email.
