Coax to Fiber Optic Links
The ControlNet Repeater Adapter and ControlNet Fiber Module quickly connect to form
a Repeater/Fiber hub that lets you extend the length of a coax segment through fiber optic
links – See Figure 1. This is similar to using a coax repeater, but fiber optic cable
provides a more secure transmission over a greater distance.
The ControlNet Repeater Adapter (or the fiber optic repeater) connects to a coax trunk
cable using a standard tap and drop cable. Each Repeater Adapter supports up to four
Fiber Modules. Each Fiber Module has a pair of Receive and Transmit ports for fiber
optic cable connections.

Repeater/Fiber Hub
The Repeater Adapter and Fiber Module are designed to plug together on a user supplied
35 x 7.5 mm metal, top hat rails (DIN EN50022). The Repeater Adapter model TC-
RPA002 requires a 24 Vdc power supply and it supplies the power to the Fiber Module.
The Fiber Module is available in a short distance model TC-RPFS01 and a medium
distance model TC-RPFM01. The TC-RPFS01 short-distance, Fiber Module supports
fiber optic trunk segments up to 300 meters (984 feet) in length. The TC-RPFM01
medium-distance, Fiber Module supports fiber optic trunk segments up to 3 kilometers
(9,842 feet) or more in length. The actual distance supported depends upon the quality of
the fiber cable and the quantity and quality of cable splices and connectors, including
patch panels

Fiber optic cable considerations

Since cable routes can vary from using plenum air returns to being buried underground,
we suggest that you work with a cable manufacturer to select the wiring that meets your
particular installation requirements. If you have access to the internet, you can visit the
Belden Wire and Cable Company web site at www.belden.com for helpful technical data
on a wide variety of wire and cable types.
The following table summarizes the general cable specifications for the given Fiber
Module.

Fiber Optic Cable Handling Guidelines

WARNING
• Never look directly into the fiber ports or the end of a cable connected to
an active transmitter. The light levels may damage your eyesight.
• Never use a microscope to view an active cable system. The
concentration of the light from the microscope could permanently
damage your eye.

Please observe the following general guidelines when handling fiber optic cable, as well
as all manufacturer recommendations.
• Do not bend the cable beyond the minimum radius specified.
• Do not touch the end of the fiber optic strands.
• Always protect the ends of a fiber optic strand from coming in contact with dust,
dirt, or other contaminants.
• Always put protective caps on disconnected fiber cable connectors.
• Clean any contaminated ends with a soft, clean, lintless cloth and alcohol.
• Observe all local regulations for installation, including the use of personal safety
equipment.
• Always dispose of any fiber waste. This prevents the contamination of clothes,
fingers, or eyes by glass fragments.
• Review all cable parameters and specifications before installation. Be sure you have
the proper amount of connectors and installation equipment. Never attempt to use
non-compatible connectors and installation tools.

Segment and link planning considerations

ATTENTION
The segment and link planning considerations covered in the Experion
Planning Guide in Knowledge Builder also apply for ControlNet fiber media.

The following considerations are specifically related to using fiber media in a ControlNet
system. They are intended to supplement the ControlNet coax system considerations.
• The total number of coax Repeaters and/or fiber optic Repeaters that can be
connected in series between two nodes is five (5) or less. The total number of
repeaters includes:
− Each coax Repeater used to connect one coax segment to another in the path.
− Each Repeater/Fiber hub used to connect a coax segment to a fiber optic
segment in the path.
− Each Fiber Module used to connect one fiber optic segment to another in the
path.
• The total length of ControlNet coax and fiber optic cable between any two nodes can
not be more than 10 km (32,808 ft).

R310.2 Experion ControlNet Fiber Optic Implementation Guide 5

3/08 Honeywell
ControlNet Fiber Media
Fiber Optic Coupling Scheme

Network Update Time (NUT) considerations

The default NUT settings for every ControlNet Interface (CNI) module are as follows:
• NUT Time = 10000 microseconds
• Smax = 1
• UMax = 20 (w/KTC card) or 24 (w/PCIC card)
• Number of Repeaters = 0
• Cable Length = 1000 Meters
• Cable Usage = A+B
• My System uses Fiber Optics = No Checkmark
Since the Number of Repeaters and Cable Length settings affect the maximum
communications delay time in the network, you may need to adjust these settings to
match your network configuration. Set the Number of Repeaters to equal the number of
repeaters (fiber and/or coax) used in series in the longest cable (fiber and/or coax) path
between two nodes in the link. Set the Cable Length to equal the longest communications
distance (fiber and/or coax cable) between two nodes in the link, if greater than 1000
meters (3,280 feet). Also, if you use fiber optic cable in your network, you must check
the checkbox for the My System uses Fiber Optics selection.
You can use the Network Tools (NTools) utility supplied with the Experion Engineering
Tools to change the network parameters (Keeper Values) in a CNI with an address of
one. Please refer to the NTools online Help for more information.

About the optical power budget

The maximum allowable attenuation for a system using a medium distance Fiber Module
is 9.3 dB. The connectors, splices, and fiber cable all contribute to the attenuation of a
system. You can use the following formula to determine the length of cable you can use.

(Rx - Tx) (total attenuation of connectors, splices, etc.)

Maximum cable length (km) =
cable attenuation (dB/km @ 1300nm)

For example, a fiber optic trunk segment could have the following attenuation
characteristics:
• A cable with an attenuation of 1 dB/km @ 1300 nm.
• Two cable connectors with an attenuation of 0.5 dB each.
• A splice with an attenuation of 0.3 dB.
• Repeater/Fiber hubs with maximum attenuation of 9.3 dB

Maximum cable length = (9.3 dB) (2 0.5 dB + 0.3 dB)

1 dB/km

For this example, the maximum cable length is 8 km.

Wiring

ATTENTION
• To comply with CE Low Voltage Directives, you must use a Safety Extra
Low Voltage (SELV) or Protected Extra Low Voltage (PELV) power
supply (24 Vdc) to power the Repeater Adapter. To comply with the
requirements of the National Electrical Code (NEC) ANSI/NFPA 70 and
the UL Listing of this equipment, you must use a UL Listed Class 2
power supply. To comply with the requirements of the Canadian
Electrical Code (CEC) C22.1 and the CSA Certification of this
equipment, you must use a CSA Certified Class 2 power supply.
• Be sure the Repeater Adapter is attached and secured before applying
power to it. Failure to do so may cause damage to the Repeater.
• Do not connect more that four Fiber Modules or exceed the power limit
(1.6 A @ 5 Vdc) to avoid damaging the Repeater and Fiber Modules.

10 Experion ControlNet Fiber Optic Implementation Guide R310.2

Honeywell 3/08
ControlNet Fiber Media
Installing ControlNet Repeater Adapter

Step Action

1 Be sure the DIN rail is connected to protective earth ground.

2 Remove the protective cover from the BNC connector and connect a
ControlNet T or Y Tap with a drop cable to it.

(Note that when a Repeater Adapter and Fiber Module pair (Hub) is used in
series to only repeat a fiber link to another fiber link (see Figure 6), there is
no need to connect a coax drop cable or terminator to the BNC connector. In
this case, it may be desirable to cover the left, red, (COAX) LED (which will
be lit to indicate no cable is connected). Otherwise, use a coax drop cable to
make a connection to a local trunk cable as noted above.)

R310.2 Experion ControlNet Fiber Optic Implementation Guide 11

3/08 Honeywell
ControlNet Fiber Media
Installing ControlNet Repeater Adapter

Step Action

3 Observing polarity, connect the leads from the 24 Vdc power supply to the A
(+V) and C (– COM) terminals, respectively. While using a small bladed
screwdriver in the slot above the terminal to pry open the terminal clamp,
insert the stripped end of the power lead into the terminal and remove the
screwdriver to secure it. The recommended wire size is 14 AWG stranded
cable. The acceptable wire size range is 24 AWG minimum to 14 AWG
maximum.

(Note that the Repeater Adapter does not have a power switch, so it is
powered whenever the power supply is turned on.)
4 • Make required approved ControlNet trunk cable and terminator
connections to the Tap.
• Refer to Figure 3 for an example of redundant ControlNet fiber media
cabling.
5 If applicable, use the B (+ V) and D (– COM) terminals to “daisy chain” 24
Vdc power to another module.
6 Use the red and yellow cable markers supplied with taps to mark the A and B
cables, respectively, in a redundant-media system.

connectors for channel 1.
1) Position the connector on the prefabricated cable so the blue pin
aligns with the RX (Recv) terminal and the black pin aligns with the
TX (Xmit) terminal. Hold down the latch and plug the connector into
the terminals.
1) Repeat these steps to connect the plug on the other end of the cable
to Channel 1 or 2 on a short distance Fiber module in another
Repeater/Fiber hub. The prefabricated cable is manufactured with
the fiber reversed on opposite ends. This automatically connects RX
(Recv) on one module with TX (Xmit) on another.

Interpreting Component LED Indications

Interpreting Component LED Indications

Repeater Adapter LEDs
The following table summarizes the meaning of typical LED indications on the Repeater
Adapter. The left LED shows the status of the coax connection and the right one shows
the accumulative status of the fiber channels.

ATTENTION
Several good fiber channels can mask faulty ones.

If both LEDs are . . . This means . . .

Off The Repeater is not powered. Check the power line

for correct voltage.

Alternately Red/Green The Repeater is being powered up or reset. This

indication normally lasts for 5 seconds after power is
applied.

Green Normal operation

Red There is a Repeater fault.

• If a jabber condition is causing the fault, the fault
indication is automatically cleared when the
jabber condition is removed from the coax or fiber
port.
• If a jabber condition is not causing the fault,
replace the Repeater.

If either LED is flashing . . . This means . . .

R310.2 Experion ControlNet Fiber Optic Implementation Guide 21

3/08 Honeywell
ControlNet Fiber Media
Interpreting Component LED Indications

Green/Off The system is experiencing temporary network

errors. This condition normally corrects itself. If the
condition persists, check your nodes and cable
system. When checking the cable system, make
sure:
• All BNC connector pins are properly seated.

• All taps are connected properly.

• All coax terminators are 75 ohms and installed at

both ends of all coax segments.
• Coax cable has not been inadvertently grounded.

Red/Off The system is experiencing a high level of network

errors. Check for broken cable or tap, and missing
segment terminator.

(Note that this is a normal indication for a system

that has no ControlNet nodes installed or enabled,
since it has no network activity. It is also a normal
indication for a Repeater Adapter used in a Hub
serving as a fiber-to-fiber repeater with no coax
cable connected.)

Fiber Module LEDs

The following table summarizes the meaning of typical LED indications on the Fiber
Module. The top LED shows the status of the Channel 1 connection and the bottom one
shows the status of the Channel 2 connection.

If LED is . . . This means . . .

Off The Fiber Module is not receiving power from the

Repeater Adapter or the Fiber Module is faulted.

Flashing Green/Off No data activity on the associated channel.

Green Normal channel operation

Checking fiber optic cable measurements

Checking fiber optic cable measurements

Measuring power loss
You can use an optical power source and power meter to check that the attenuation in
your fiber cable sections is less than 9.3 dB. Optical power sources send light through
one end of a fiber cable section to be measured on an optical power meter at the other
end. This lets you confirm the viability of a given cable section.
It is a good idea to keep a record of the attenuation levels for each cable section. These
records can be helpful in troubleshooting and maintaining your network.
The following is a list of possible causes for high attenuation or considerable power loss
in a cable section.
• Poor splices
• Bending losses
• Broken fibers
• Poor connections
• Contaminated or damaged connectors

Measuring OTDR
In addition to measuring power loss, you should check your total fiber network using an
Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR). The OTDR transmits light into a strand of
fiber optic cable and displays the reflected light. This data will help you determine the
following about your fiber network.
• Total distance along the cable to a fiber break.
• Distance to an event (splice, bend, and connector) that attenuates the light.
• Distance between two attenuating events.
• Light attenuation between two points of the cable.
• Total reflected light or light reflected from a single event.
