DEFINITIO
N about the color, shape, size, age and
Descriptive adjectives tell us
condition of a noun.

1 Adjectives usually come before the nouns that they describe.

Color Size Material

the blue sky a tiny hairpin a wooden spoon

a yellow submarine an enormous burger the gold ring

a pink rose a colossal monument an enamel bathtub

We do not always have to put an adjective first. Some adjectives can be

2
placed after a verb. These verbs include be, seem, appear, feel and
sound.
Lizzie is messy.
Our new teacher seems nice.
The problem appears serious.
Ammu feels confident she will win the race.
Your plan sounds good to me.

3 Sometimes, we may want to use more than one adjective to

describe something.

a cute little puppy

an old plastic bottle
a modern, paper and glass structure
a huge, long, black and yellow African snake

4 When we use more than one adjective to describe a noun, we need to
place the adjectives in the right order. This table shows us the correct
order of adjectives.

quality or opinion gorgeous, awful, happy, nice, bossy, warm, handsome

size huge, small, tall, short, towering, fat, skinny, slender

age ancient, new, modern, two-month-old

shape circular, triangular, rectangular, square

color black, brown, yellow, white, pink

nationality or origin Egyptian, Australian, Thai, Vietnamese

material paper, plastic, metal, wooden, glass

1 We usually form adjectives from other words like nouns, verbs or
other adjectives.
From Adjectives
love (noun/verb) lovable
grace (noun) graceful
imagine (verb) imaginary
excite (verb) exciting
lone (adjective) lonely
red (adjective) reddish

We usually add a group of letters to the end of a word when forming

2
an adjective. These are called suffixes.

Suffixes Adjectives

-y messy, funny, dirty

-ly lonely, weekly, friendly

-ary primary, secondary, imaginary

-able lovable, admirable, agreeable

-al musical, national, natural

-ed astonished, excited, bored

-en golden, wooden, rotten

-ful wonderful, playful, beautiful

-less careless, hopeless, cheerless

-ic cubic, artistic, atomic

-ing shocking, boring, exciting

-ish brownish, childish, Scottish

-ive expensive, creative, destructive

3 Some words can be used to form more than one type of adjective.

What is the difference between exciting and excited?

We can see that the -ed and -ing suffixes produce two
adjectives from the verb excite: exciting and excited. These
adjectives do not have the same meaning, even though they
come from the same word.

Adjectives ending in –ing, such as exciting, boring or interesting,

describe what we think about something or someone.

It was such an exciting film.

The tennis match was very boring.
I am reading an interesting book about space at the
moment.

Adjectives ending in -ed such as excited, bored or interested

describe our own or another person’s feelings.

They were so excited to see the film.

We felt bored while watching the tennis match.
I am interested in books about space.

4 Some adjectives are formed from two words. These are known as
compound adjectives.

That vase is handmade so it is rather special.

Pemba wears such old-fashioned clothes.
The blonde-haired boy is a keen cyclist.
She has a two-year-old brother.
My mother needs to wear glasses because she is long-sighted.

EXPLAIN
Observation is one of the greatest powers in the
universe

Hi kids, today we will learn about adjectives that are

used to compare two or more things. These are
called comparative and superlative adjectives.

By the end of the lesson, you will be able to correctly

identify and compare adjectives.

C . C O M PA R I S O N O F A D J E C T I V E S
EXAMPLE

I am stronger I am the
I am strong. than you. strongest of all.

DEFINITION
We can use adjectives to compare two or more people, places or things.
These adjectives are known as comparative and superlative
adjectives.

1 We use the adjective in its base form when we are not making any
comparisons.

Zoka is strong.

2 We use the comparative form of the adjective to compare two people,

places or things.

Drago is stronger than Zoka.

3 We use the superlative to compare more than two people, places or

things.

Captain Spark is the strongest of all.

27

Here is another example of comparison.

In winter, the weather in the Black Desert is cold.

In winter, the weather in the Shallow Creek is colder than in
the Black Desert.
In winter, the weather is coldest in the Stormy Sea.
Do you notice a pattern in how to form comparative and superlative
adjectives?

add -er to the end of the adjective in the base

comparative adjective

add -est to the end of the adjective in the base
superlative adjective
form

Base Comparative Superlative

fast faster fastest

nice nicer nicest

REMEMBER
slow slower slowest
We sometimes have to
pretty prettier prettiest change the ending of
the adjective before we
clean cleaner cleanest add -er or -est.

In general, when the base form of an adjective is a word that is

longer than two syllables, we form comparative and superlative
adjectives by adding the words more/less or most/least before the
base form.

Base Comparative Superlative

more intelligent most intelligent

intelligent
less intelligent least intelligent
more beautiful most beautiful
beautiful
less beautiful least beautiful
more difficult most difficult

less difficult least difficult

Here are more examples of comparison.
Ammu is more obedient than Simba.
Simba is less obedient than Ammu.

Lizzie is the most obedient student.

Zoka is the least obedient student.

Some adjectives have irregular forms and do not follow the regular pattern of
forming comparative and superlative adjectives.

Base Comparative Superlative

good better best

bad worse worst

far further/farther furthest/farthest

much/many more most

little less least

Here are some examples using irregular forms.

I am good at drawing, but I think Jhus is better

than I am. However, Pemba is the best in our class
at drawing.

Poha's behaviour is bad, but Daka's behaviour is worse.

Zinka's behaviour is the worst of all.

Shallow Creek is quite far from the Golden Beach, but the
Brown Plateau is further and the Black Desert is the
furthest of all.

Captain Spark does not have much money. Roxy has more
money than Captain Spark, and Drago has the most. So
Captain Spark has the least money of all because he has
less than the others.

Hi kids, today we will learn about adjectives. Now

we will learn about nouns as adjectives, adjectives
as nouns and adjective phrases.

At the end of the lesson, we will understand how to

use adjectives correctly in a sentence.

1 . N O U N S T H AT B E H AV E L I K E A D J E C T I V E S

Come on! Let‘s join the

game on the
football court!

Although we usually use adjectives to describe nouns, we can also use

nouns to describe other nouns. In this case, the nouns behave like
adjectives and are placed before the nouns to be described.

• Clarissa works in a bicycle shop.

• What a touching love story this is!

68

The real noun is in the plural, and not the noun behaving as an
adjective.

 Computer shops.
 Apple pies.

× Computers shop.
× Apples pie.

However, plural-looking nouns remain unchanged.

• One news reporter.

• One sports hall.
• Two news reporters.
• Three sports halls.

We can use several nouns that behave as an adjective before a noun.

• The honey turkey ham is delectable!

• The Singapore soccer team coach is training the players.

We can use an adjective before nouns that behave as an adjective to

describe a noun.

• The delicious orange juice was sold out almost immediately!

• The students enjoyed the enriching school excursion to the
Discovery Centre.

NOUNS

We can shorten a noun phrase by using an adjective as a noun.

When we remove the word people in the following sentence, the words rich
and famous become nouns.

• Rich people and famous people lead a lavish lifestyle. The rich and
famous lead a lavish lifestyle.

The definite article the is used before adjectives that behave like nouns.

• Mother Teresa dedicated her life to helping the sick and the poor.
• We should give up our seats on the train to the old.
