Role Of
Media In A
Democracy

Introduction
Media constitute the fourth pillar of democracy. The role of the
media is vital in generating a democratic culture that extends
beyond the political system and becomes engrained in the
public consciousness over time. Media is supplying the political
information that voters base their decisions on. They identify
problems in our society and serve as a medium for deliberation.
They also serve as watchdogs that we rely on for uncovering
errors and wrongdoings by those who have power. The role of
media in a democracy is as crucial as that of the politicians and
should never be underestimated. The media can play a positive
role in democracy only if there is an enabling environment that
allows them to do so. They need the requisite skills for the kind
of in-depth reporting that a new democracy requires. There
should also be mechanisms to ensure they are held accountable
to the public and that ethical and professional standards are
upheld. Media independence is guaranteed if media
organizations are financially viable, free from intervention of
media owners and the state, and operate in a competitive
environment.
Basically media is deepening as well as shaking democracy
hence media plays positive role and negative role too.
here we are getting discuss about 3 types of media (playing an
important role in democracy )
 Print media
 Electronic media
 New media (online media)

Print Media
Print media is found in many different forms. From newspapers (most
popular form ) and magazines to newsletters ,brochures and posters .
Other form of print media including direct mail marketing , flyers ,
handbills , banners , billboards and press releases are less popular but
they are still used by industry professionals . It is a form of advertising
that uses physically printed media . Print never dead and are able to
save them for so long .

Awareness + Motivation + Education +

Entertainment

• Print media make us aware of health regarding issues in which our

government is participating very effectively . It shows checkups
advertisements given by government to provide a good treatment in
hospitals run by government .
• Print media also make us known with the help done or shall done
by government for eg. Cancer patients are getting a huge amount of INR
by government to give a proper treatment . All these types of steps help
leaders to get support and hence democracy deepen .
• We saw something is written in newspapers that govt. Is providing
sanitation facilities to the girls in schools for eg. Government is providing
free sanitation pads to these govt. Schools and also this media make us
updates with some new facts as GST is removed from sanitary pads.
• Print media is effecting our society and enlighten us that what
articles are revised or which amendment is updated so that we are free
to open our eyes in a democratic world where we get our rights of
freedom and equality to live freely in the society .
• Print media don’t show us the proper expression of political
leaders while any speech as print media is factual and just tell us about
important facts .
• Banners are also helpful for deepening democracy . For eg. I found
banners of Arvind Kejriwal in Lok nayak hospital in which he guaranteed
public to get every medicine free of cost and also mention a helpline no.
to complaint for any issue regards medicine and any problem in
treatment .
• Same as new media print media is convenient to study numeric
records eg. Elections are held and how many votes a party or its
candidate get or how many adults voted ??! Understanding All this is too
easy through print media because we can understand the numeric
record calmly as some people are unable to catch it up rapidly by TV.
• Media help us to gain knowledge as banners at the time if election
advertise us the different promises , symbols and candidates appearing
from different parties . this is a step forward democracy as election is
Backbone of democracy .
• Print media educates us in different ways newspaper had a gret
contribution in it. Sometimes we see the advertisement of “JAGO
GRAHAK JAGO” in newspapers which educate us with the rights of
consumer as the constitution of India provide us many rights for our safe
side (as a consumer) . For eg. If you are buying a honey bottle so you
have right to information from its label and shopkeeper too, no one can
deny you . It make people educated as well as aware.
• People had very few means of entertainment and relied a great
deal upon information provided by print media to make openions .
People started their mornings with newspapers to get their daily dose of
Info related society and polity around them.
• And the cartoon Pictures of political leader In newspaper
entertains public and make them understand the political news easily . It
shows Freedom Of media and also deepen democracy .

Electronic Media

Electronic media are Media that use electronics or electromechanical

audience to access the content. The primary electronic media sources
familiar to the general public are videos recordings, audio recordings,
Multimedia presentations, slide presentations. Any equipment used in
the electronic communication process (e.g. television, radio, telephone,
desktop computer, game console, handheld device may also be
considered electronic media.

Entertainment

• Electronic media is good for advertisements which motivate us for

moral values as the advertisement (video advertisement) shown on
Swachch Bharat Mission motivates us to keep India clean . It is an
environmental issue which combine a political issue in it (as Narendra
Modi is promoting this mission ) so we can consider it as a step of well
being of democratic India .
• Electronic media is awesome for its videos recordings and sound
recordings. It make easy to understand news without any effort and
make people aware of fundamental rights, policies and how they affect
them directly or indirectly (also increase our education level).it
motivates people to use their rights . And if people are free to use their
rights , so surely democracy is getting deep The cartoon stories on News
channels as “So Sorry” in which the current political and democratic
issues are reported by the political leaders (by making them cartoon)
entertain public and make them aware of current political happenings.
• At the time of elections electronic media (same as print media )
remind the promises and work done by leaders, enlighten us by reality
so we are ready to vote for the right political party , hence it ends up the
confusion .
• Telephone is an electronic media and is a fast source of two way
communication .when it was just starting of Aam Aadmi Party , Arvind
Kejriwal used to Phone and share or promote his patry policies and
appeal for vote .public influenced by his party and made him the CM of
Delhi .
• But we found media monopoly exist and hence many news
channels don’t show reality and promote a particular party and its views
so people got influenced by false information and some news channels
shows useless matter as Aajtek generally shows some religious issues
which doesn’t mean .
• “Beti Bachao Beti Padao” this is to aware Indians for educating
girls. it is promoted by government of India . So it has a positive impact
of government in democracy .if there are negatives , positive also exist.
• As Electronic media shares videos of hospitals where it shows the
reality of government hospital as patients are more in no. And beds are
in a minute quantity .media ask government what is going on? And it is
freedom Of media and if media is free to raise public problems then
obviously democracy is getting
strong .

New Media

New media are forms of media that are native to computers,

computational and relying on computers for re-distribution. Some
examples of new media are telephones, computers, virtual worlds,
single media, website games, human-computer interface, computer
animation and interactive computer installations. Wikipedia, an online
encyclopedia, is a good example of New Media, combining Internet
accessible digital text, images and video with web-links, creative
participation of contributors. Facebook and twitter are another types of
New Media, belonging to the category of social media model, in which
most users are also participants.

Entertainment
• social media platforms have such a high population, and the
decline of newspapers being sold on stands politicians are forced to take
their messages to platforms like social media since they are completely
free for the users. Since politicians are bringing their messages to these
platforms whether it's a candidates twitter account tweeting where they
are campaigning that day, or a candidate posting a video message about
a policy, or what they want to accomplish every single adult who has
access to the internet, has the chance to be part of the democratic
process for free.
• The democratic engagement doesn't just end with politicians
posting their messages, or advertising their events on social media.
Unlike newspapers, and TV news segments the average is able to make
comments, and tweet directly at campaigns, as fast as it takes to click
send . So that people are able to support their party openly and can use
their right of freedom very freely .
• Social media allows direct engagement with government as we can
message to Arvind Kejriwal on its official account on twitter or
instagram . So now public can freely engage with government .hence
citizen participation in governance make it popular ,as Democracy
demands .
• But there is a negative fact that it is not obvious that Arvind
Kejriwal read our messages and take a prominent action on it . He can
ignore all that .
• New media allows healthy debate between people . And hence
constructive criticism, propelling conversation and political discussion
take place .
• New media is also good for fearless journalism as presentation of
every fact is possible here and every one is free to update truth and his
views . Also It is convenient as its operation is too easy , everything is
easy to share easy to consume variant from print and electronic media .

Conclusion
Democracy is commonly defined as a government of the people, by the
people and for the people. Freedom and democracy walk hand in hand.
We live in society today where the media plays a prominent role in how
we see the world, and how our opinions are formed, whether it is from
what we watch on television or what we gather from newspapers.

Media acts as an interface between the common man and the

Government. It is a very powerful tool with the ability to make and break
the opinion of people. The media has helped to make our society a
democracy by placing emphasis on issues that at one point in time
would have been considered strictly private such as child birth,
homosexuality, child care, domestic violence, and sexual harassment.
Media also act as the watchdog for the government in a democratic
society by facilitating the people to articulate their views, and demands.
The media should be independent and should not be influenced by the
government. Otherwise, media will be an effective tool to misinformed
the society, making them as a tool of propaganda instead of educating
the voters. Democracy is meaningless without a free, neutral and active
media. There is no doubt that media has done a commendable job from
time to time in making people aware about the harsh realities of life, in
exposing corruption prevalent in our society, in increasing the
awareness level among the people and a lot more but I feel that still a
lot remains to be done. Media is becoming increasingly popular among
people from all walks of life and it certainly has the potential of
influencing the thoughts of its readers/viewers to a large extent.
