1. When is the building open?

During term-time the Vijay Patel building is open 8am until midnight, Monday to Friday. It is open at
weekends from 9am until 5pm.

Outside of term-time, it is open 8am-7pm Monday to Friday.

When the building is closed, you can use the Library 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

2. How can I find my way around the building?

The Vijay Patel Building has three main areas:

 Arts Tower (rooms prefixed VPAT) which mainly houses programmes from Leicester School
of Art, including Fine Art; Photography and Video; and Art and Design Foundation. It also
houses some Architecture spaces on the first floor.
 Design Wing (rooms prefixed VPDW) which mainly houses programmes in Leicester School
of Architecture and those in the School of Design, including Design Crafts, Interior Design,
Design Products, and all Fashion and Textiles programmes.
 POD (rooms prefixed VPPD) which houses a range of facilities supporting activity across the
faculty and beyond, including The Gallery; the Confucius Institute; the Faculty Postgraduate
Centre; the Design Unit; Centre for English Language Learning (CELL); and the Fletcher Suite.

The Fletcher Suite on the fourth floor includes the Fletcher hub and terrace, as well as the building’s
main lecture theatre, VPDW 4.05.

The Food Village and Riverside Café are also both located in the Vijay Patel Building, as is the Art and
Design Materials Shop.

3. What parts of the building can I access?

All of the hub areas in the Design Wing and Arts Tower are open to all students, regardless of their
faculty or programme of study.

Workshops are accessible by all students on art, architecture and design-based programmes,
following your induction with the technical instructor for each workshop.

1
Each programme has its own studio space and computer labs that students on this programme can
access. The appendix at the end of this document sets out which are the main spaces you can access
on your programme.

4. Where can I eat and drink when I’m studying in the building?

The Food Village and Riverside Café are both located in the Vijay Patel Building and offer a range of
hot and cold food and drink options, to eat in or take away. The opening hours for these can be
found here: http://www.dmu.ac.uk/about-dmu/estates-commercial-services/catering/catering.aspx

You can also bring your own food and drinks into the building. If you wish to heat up your own food,
you can do so in the DSU facilities in the Campus Centre.

Food and drink can be consumed in any of the hub spaces, but must not be taken into workshops,
studios or computer labs. Bottled water only can be taken into these spaces.

5. Where can I access hot and cold drinking water?

Hot and cold drinking water is available in the kitchen areas VPDW 4.08 and VPAT 6.50. There are
also drinking fountains located around the building, outside the glass workshop VPDW 0.70 and in
the 1st 2nd and 5th floor POD breakout spaces.

6. How can I access IT facilities?

Each programme areas has designated computer labs that students can access, which is set out in
the appendix at the end of this document. Any specialist software required for your programme will
be available in these labs. You will also be able to access computers in the breakout areas around the
building, which will have standard software available but may not have the full range used by your
programme.

When the Vijay Patel Building is closed or if you need additional computer space, you can use the
facilities in the Library. Most specialist software used by students based in the Vijay Patel Building is
also available on computers in the Library.

Students who need to borrow IT or AV equipment may do so through the AV Loans facility in the
Portland Building.

7. Where can I print my work?

There are a number of Multifunctional Devices (MFDs) located around the Vijay Patel Building, for
standard A4 and A3 printing and scanning in black & white and colour. All devices can be used by all

2
students, and they are accessed using your student card. Printing on MFDs is charged at 1p per black
and white A4 page, up to 6p for an A3 colour page.

For wide-format printing, students on Design Products, Interior Design and Design Crafts can use the
specialist facilities in the first floor Interior Design studio VPDW1.30, students studying Architecture
can use the specialist facilities in the Architecture studio VPDW 2.30 or the MArch studio VPDW
2.20. Students in Fine Art and Photography and Video have a specialist printer on the 5th floor of the
Arts Tower, and Fashion and Textiles students have their printer on the 3rd floor of the Arts Tower.
You will only be charged for the cost of the ink required for each page you print.

There is also a printer for use with acetates on the 3rd floor.

All printers (MFDs and wide-format printers) are available whenever the building is open. When the
building is closed, you can access standard printing facilities in the Library.

You can bind your work in the Art and Design Materials Shop, on the ground floor of the Arts Tower.

8. How do I access art and design materials for my programme?

All students on art, design and architecture-based programmes will receive the core materials they
require for their programme at no cost. These will be provided to you by the technical instructors in
each area, and will usually be provided in a standard pack containing the materials you need for
each module. If you require a larger quantity of these materials, please ask the technical instructor
who may clarify your request with your academic.

Please help us by only using the materials you need for your programme. Excess material can be
recycled via the materials recycling bins on each floor.

Your programme leader will have a list of the core materials that have been agreed for your
programme. Any materials not on this list you will need to purchase separately. Many of these
materials will be available in the Art and Design Materials Shop on the ground floor of the Arts
Tower.

9. Which workshops can I use and when can I access them?

Workshops are accessible by all students on art, architecture and design-based programmes,
following your induction with the technical instructor for each workshop. Some equipment will
require pre-booking, and the local rules for each workshop will set out the arrangements for this.

If your programme does not include an induction to a particular workshop and you would like to use
it, you can schedule an individual induction at an appropriate time with the technical instructor for
that area. Please note that some workshops will be in high demand, and during busy periods priority
will be given to those students who require access to the workshop as a core part of their
programme.

3
For the first part of the academic year, the workshops are open 9am-5pm Monday to Thursday.
From week 7, during term time they are open later in the evenings until 8pm, Monday to Thursday.
From 5pm to 8pm a reduced service is available, with the workshops accessible for independent
working only. Some equipment may not be available during these extended hours. Technical staff
are on hand to supervise each area, but for full technical support please use the workshops during
standing opening hours, 9am-5pm. Outside of term time, the workshops are open 9am-5pm.

Workshops are closed for lunch every day from 1-2pm.

10. What security arrangements are in place for the building?

There is access control in place throughout the building, meaning only students and staff with the
appropriate permissions can access each subject area.

CCTV is also in place throughout the Vijay Patel Building, and it is regularly patrolled by members of
the DMU Security team. During evening and weekend opening times, there is a member of security
staff based full-time in the building.

If you notice anything unusual or have any concerns, please call DMU Security on 0116 257 7642.

11. How do I make suggestions about the facilities or let you know if I have any problems?

If you have any suggestions about the Vijay Patel Building and the facilities available on your
programme, or want to raise any issues about these, the first place to pass these to is your course
rep. They will ensure that these are raised with your programme leader, and at the next Staff
Student Consultative Committee (SSCC) if necessary. Urgent issues or problems can be raised
directly with your programme leader.
